Open Thread - Oscar Night and Winners List

And say whatever you gotta say. We'll have a ton of coverage over the next three days but during the actual show we just watch like the Stockholm Syndrome devotees that we are (though we'll post a winners list during commercial breaks.)

Why Green Book's win made me cringe - Not why you think!

Best Picture Nominee Oscar Tallies: Bohemian Rhapsody: 4 wins; Black Panther, Roma, Green Book: 3 wins each; A Star is Born, Vice, The Favourite, BlacKkKlansman: 1 win each. The last time each Best Picture nominee won an award was 2014 but it's not so common since something usually goes home empty-handed.

Blackkklansman has the most iconic score of the year

Spike Lee was awesome but boho has made me want to give up

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBrodie

I really like Black Panther but is everyone associated with that film going to get a standing ovation?

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNnnnvg

Lady Gaga is acting so bad in her acceptance speech

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjota

OMG! Shallow... I am so emotional and sooooo shocked.............. what did I just witness?

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I like having non-movie people, but would be cool to have them in partnership, especially with movie people. Trevor Noah cool. Someone like A-Rod would be ee (in any capacity really).

Queen was random but nice to see something like that occasionally. Thona little too much slurpage of the movie, in context.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Did I blink and miss Carol Channing?

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBushwick

Shallow - best part of the night by far

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenteranonny

John Bailey is lucky to receive polite applause, he's just as laconic and underwhelming in person as his decisions have been this past year. (I hope people went up and told him off backstage.)

Thankfully the In Memoriam segment was tasteful, although regretfully they didn't have time to include Stanley Donen.
That Spike Lee win was something, his standing ovation seemed very heartfelt.
The Green Book writers were very mediocre, making me really wish the writers of "The Favourite" had won instead.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

Lol at Barbra Streisand bedazzling her old clothes.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

And Richard E Grant is all of us when Barbra’s in the room.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

Damn. We’re at a Best Actor already?! This show surprisingly IS going by quite fast. They’re making good time this year.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLesley L

Here it comes. The worst actor winner of the past 20 years. And you just know rami will get an ovation.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNnnnvg

He knew he was gonna win, ugh. You could tell by his face while they were presenting the clips.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLesley L

What’s with the malice against Malek?

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

Ouch, didn't see that coming.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

Well.. Now Glenn close is gonna get a honorary oscar in the next few years for sure

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNiklas83

THE HORROR MOTHERFUCKING HORROR
I CANNOT
GLENN!

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Glenn Close losing after wearing that shiny gold gown...how embarassing for her

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenteranonny

Fuck the Oscars. Just...

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterken s

I cannot believe GLENN LOST AGAIN THIS IS HORRIBLE

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterElle

yay Olivia Colman!!!!

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBrodie

Elated for Colman, but Ali and Malek are Oscar winners and Close is not. The Oscars don't deserve her.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMustafa

Oliva Colman is deserving you guys

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjota

Olivia Colman!! Sorry, guys, speaking truth to power.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTim

@ MDA: ouch indeed. 😢 Realistically speaking this was probably Close’s last chance for an Oscar. Unless she manages to land the role of a lifetime & she knocks it out of the park, she will probably remain a 7-time nominee & zero-time winner. Sigh.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLesley L

I'm dead inside.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Put Olivia Colman in witness protection bruh

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterkris01

Well, finally a surprise, and it’s an unpleasant one
Just like what Thorgy said:”Ugh. Jesus. Gross”
I love Colman, but winning a best actress for a supporting role....*sigh*
Glenn Close was gracious in losing something that’s pretty sure hers to lose

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLars

Ugh, the one acting category where I didn't want a surprise winner gets a surprise winner.

Don't get me wrong, Colman gave the best performance of the five, but it belonged in supporting.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJ

As much as i love Olivia "best speech of the evening by the way.
My heart weeps for Glenn.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFreddy

Olivia Colman is awesome and deserves to have won for making an actual movie instead of a vanity piece.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDrew

I absolutely love Olivia’s Oscar!!! Best speech of the night, which made up for a very disappointing ceremony awards-wise

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFernando

well, the last two prizes were for nicer things

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjota

The surprise win of Olivia Colman has knocked all of us sideways.
Just want to say how gracious Olivia was to Glenn, and how Glenn Close, just kinda took it on the chin. Smiling up at Oliva and probably thinking, damn, again.
Twitter is going to go nuts. But I love Olivia Colman and am happy for her, because she was so fabulous.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

Co-sign Drew. If you win for a bad movie it’s a trash win, bottom line.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTim

Amandla Stenberg looked stunning!

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

This is so wrong and it represents all the mistakes the Academy made this year:

Colman is supporting and you should have won there.

The Academy lost the chance to award Glenn Close.

And that’s why we learn to not care...

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMarcelo - Brazil

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Alfonso Cuarón is a hottie.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

Olivia was fantastic but yet again they worship a gimmick mimic type of performance over nuance and a more normal life character. Fuck the Oscars, done with them until they give Glenn her due.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

I FUCKKIINNGGG KNEEEWWW ITTT AHHHHH

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

Man. What a disappointing Oscars / awards season this year. Amirite?

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLesley L

🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNiklas83

Marcelo, I agree with you. After all the disappointments throughout the year, you learn to care less and less about the Oscars.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLars

And now the white people win the Best Pic about race relations....

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

So, positive posts over. This was a bad year. From the 4 BR wins and Glenn’s loss to a middling BP winner to the ugliest sets of all time. One of the few bright spots was the diversity of presenters, not just ethnicity but background.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

Gil C. must be so happy

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMarcelo

I feel very bad that Green Book won. A terrific movie that is just gonna get killed for a while for this. And not because someone thinks it's good but others are great, but because people want to whine when they don't love something that happens to be simple.

Ugh.

Also, I hope I didn't hear Close's performance called a vanity piece? I certainly wouldn't assume that's what was meant.

But of course if you did then face palm for you ✌🏼

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Well this was the most depressing Oscars ever.

February 24, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFreddy

@Bruno - Coleman was NOT a gimmick mimic type performance. WTH you talking about?

@marcelo - we going overboard with category fraud complaints here. Coleman won in lead fair and square.
