I think Amy Sherman-Palladino is great for this project. We know she cares about casting and doesn't have much time for male characters, so "Gypsy" is a perfect match.
I'm not mad at this remake idea, though it does seem like a show without a lot of room for re-interpretation - the text and setting are pretty specific.
You left out the most exciting news about that Gypsy revival. It is rumored that Melissa McCarthy is the frontrunner for the starring role.
Cast Imelda Staunton as Mama Rose. Done.
I'll say let's just keep beating up Harvey Weinstein till he goes to prison and share a jail cell with R. Kelly, Bryan Singer, and Chris Brown. Fuck those motherfuckers.
You have to get an interview while she's promoting the fragrance.
SOOOOOO Woody Allen is broke
I must repeat what I think I saw Jason Adams suggest on twitter: Toni Collette is Mama Rose. Done. Everyone else can go home.
I guess slave masters didn’t rape slaves !
We've gotten Julianne Moore an Oscar and Glenn Close is on her way. Let's just get Bette Midler in Gypsy and get her overdue Oscar too. lol
@Philip H
Midler doesn't have the screen legacy to justify overdue narrative with the Academy. Better off arguing for an honorary citation.
Loved The interview with Michelle. She is so intelligent! I miss her in the big screen so much! Thank God her kids are at the college!
About overdose narratives, Pffeifer and Weaver are the two next ones to receive Oscara for their works. In my opinion.
I know that Bening deserves, but Sig and 'chelle are Unforgiven considering Alien, Aliens, At the Gorilla Mountain, Dangerous Liaisons, Batman Returns, Baker Boys and Age of Innocence.
The male side: Harrison Ford, Samuel L Jackson, Ian McKellen, Albert Finney.
Michelle Rodriguez’s comments are so dumb. Your director made a movie about this very thing, girl.
"Unstoppable zombie?" Maybe before, but now I'm suddenly really excited about a Gypsy remake. There isn't a definitive film version yet and it's one of the best musicals ever made. Way better use of time than a West Side Story remake. And ASP is a great fit for the material. The show biz setting and focus on mother-daughter relationships are her territory and she directed season 2 of Maisel as if it were a musical. I think this could turn out really well.
The Rock seems like a great choice. He's a funny guy, a movie (and television) star, and even though he's an action star he has an incredibly soft and human side. Also, his smile lights up the room.
I don't understand why they wouldn't go with him.
I just created my overdue list the other day:
1) Glenn (pending)
2) Laura Linney
2) Toni Collette
4) Miranda Richardson
5) Laura Dern
6) Olivia Colman (pending)
7) Michelle Pfeiffer
8) Isabelle Huppert
9) Kathleen Turner (sigh)
10) Gong Li
Would be happy to see the usual suspects triumph like Annette Bening, Sigourney Weaver, etc. too.
Ooh... I second that Toni Collette as Mama Rose mention. As for Louise, what about Ariana Grande?
The Rock would have made perfect Oscar host and he would have gotten better ratings
Am I the only one who found the Avengers teaser boring as hell?
Something Nathaniel mentions during casting calls for motion picture musicals - can any of the women being bandied about (including in this thread) actually sing?
While I love the Roz Russell/Natalie Wood Gypsy I agree it's not definitive and now that Babs has dropped out (love her but she waited too long to do it-in the 80's or 90's she would have been perfection) I'm looking forward to the new take.....as long as it's cast properly. Toni Collette is a great suggestion but is she going to be high profile enough for the studio?
The Academy's cluelessness and callous attitude has got me thinking about just waiting until the next morning to find out the winners and skipping what is rapidly shaping up to be a disaster.
good grief, everything about purl was awful, including the animation.
Glad to see Vanity Fair doing an article about the absurd that is the Oscars leaving some awards out of the actual show, and industry folks starting to speak out on it even if some are kinda afraid of and speak anonymously. The show's producers really have shown they have no clue this year.
Also, Amy Sherman-Palladino is a perfect fit for Gypsy. One of those "Why has nobody made this connection before?" moments.
Latest update: Oscars producers had backtracked AGAIN!! All the previous four acting winners will be invited back to present!! Yayy
But no words yet on they'll be presenting wat awards
Michelle Pfeiffer is a Cuaron movie would be an IDEAL pairing IMO. I think the tone of their work would actually mesh quite well.
I enjoyed the read on Asian-Australians, though it does seem totally disingenuous to compare someone starring in a Scorsese-directed Best Picture nominee opposite DiCaprio to someone starring in 'Blockers'...
Tyler -- sure, but it's telling that I am interested in a few of those stars and I tend to know what's happening in Australian movies/cinema and I didn't even know these people were Australian so they definitely aren't 'claiming' them in the way they do other stars. Of course it's all a bit nebulous because it depends on what sites you're following and which media you're noticing and such. But yeah. Fair point
Ladies and gentlemen, so that we don't start to think that Collette as Madame Rose is a novel idea, I present to you my TFE comments over the last few years:
"I've long said that hers is THE best performance in The Hours, and I'll keep putting out my idea of her taking on Madame Rose in Gypsy until it finally takes hold." (November 2, 2018)
"Ah, Toni Collette. I hope that one day my dream of seeing you portray Madame Rose in either a stage revival or film adaptation Gypsy will come true. Until then, I'll take you where I can get you." (February 2, 2017)
"I continue to wait for another film adaptation of Gypsy with Toni Collette as Madame Rose. I won't stop asking for it until it happens." (May 21, 2016)
"I'm also wondering what happened with the Gypsy redux. Not that it's necessary, but every few years there's talk that never materialized into an actual film. It's probably for the best anyway. If neither Catherine Zeta-Jones nor Toni Collette portrays Madame Rose, then I'm not interested, and if Lea Michele is still in the running as Louise, then I'm truly already over it." (May 13, 2014)
"Gypsy, this time with Toni Collette as Madame Rose" (June 13, 2012)
"What I have been completely obsessed with for the past few days is the idea of Toni Collette as Madame Rose in whatever new film version of Gypsy currently being planned. There are so many things about her casting that seems so right to me. I think I would die at a chance to witness her tear into "Everything's Coming up Roses" and "Rose's Turn." Seriously. I need someone to make this happen." (March 28, 2012)
I had lots of time this morning...
I'd like to interject re: the "Toni Collette in Gypsy" accredited to me above -- it wasn't my idea, I'd just retweeted somebody suggesting it. I CO-SIGN IT THOUGH and we've clearly got some back-up here. Let's start a petition. Somebody get me Amy Sherman Palladino on the phone! I'll put on a tiiiiiny little top hat and march up and down Hollywood Boulevard until I catch her attention.
They should just have Collette play every character in the film.
that Liam Neeson “article” is so funny
but I agree, leave the guy alone. its all so silly.
