Beauty Break: Tuxes and Gowns from the Oscars

We'll get to the nine golden ones, the nominated actresses tomorrow. But for now. Let's talk about other gowns and tuxes from the 92nd Oscars. Which were your favourite looks?

Timothée, Anthony, Billy, Rami, and Mahershala

While a few of the men continued to mix it up (the past few years have been much more daring in terms of the red carpet for men) mostly we were black to the classic black and white tuxes of yore. Not that men don't look great in those...

WINNERS... Brad, Antonio, and Taikia. Well, Antonio in our hearts!

Leo, Dean, George, and Joaquin

Still, we prefer them with a bit of something to set them apart like Dean-Charles Chapman's pop of red in flower form on his lapel.

Keanu, Adam, and John plus their plus onesHave you ever noticed that male stars sometimes won't even pose without their significant others? The actresses always take some solo photos.

Rooney, Zazie, Natalie, MargaretBrie, Salma, Julia, ReginaGeena, Beanie, Caitronia, Gal

Women also went fairly conservative this year. At least in terms of color. There was a LOT of black and white and pink.

Sigourney, Kelly, Maya, MindyRebel, Greta, Sandra, Julia

So we were very grateful for everyone who opted for color. Even then though the styles were (mostly) conservative.

Idina, Janelle, America

There were some true eye-catchers though, whether or not you liked being caught.

Kristen, Olivia, Kaitlyn, and Sandy Powell

What were your favourite lewks on Oscar night?

Just your daily (sporadic) reminder that Renée Zellweger is a two-time Academy Award winning Actress.

Whoever arranged these photos gets an A+.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTom Ford

That is Keanu’s mother with him, Patricia Taylor.

I loved the story about Julia Butter’s dress.
The 10 year old (?) collaborated with designer Christian Siriano, and drew him a sketch of what she wanted. All credit to Siriano, that he didn’t try to ease her into something different, but tried to make her dream dress exactly the way she wanted it. So it’s really a kid’s view of what a dress should look like.

I thought it was a super disappointing red carpet but my favourites were:

- Penelope Cruz
- Brie Larson
- Billie Eilish
- Margot Robbie
- Sigourney Weaver
- Timothee Chalamet
- Taika Waititi
- Janelle Monae
- Kristen Wiig
- Rooney Mara
- Margaret Qualley
- Natalie Portman

@Tom Ford Well... he left out the best, Penélope Cruz.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRamona

Natalie Portman has never looked better - just stunning. Also loved Geena Davis, Janelle Monáe and Sandra Oh.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSally W

Laura Dern's dress was easily the least inspired dress of the night, and I wanted to liked Timothy' Chalamets outfit but I just couldn't. Anthony Ramos and Janelle Moane were the winners for me.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMark

No mention at all of the Parasite cast?

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRon

We are going to pretend Chalamet didn't look ridiculous? OK.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterLuke

Best: Penélope

Worst: Saoirse, Florence, Olivia

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Did not like Timothée Chalamet’s track suit. Did not look polished or right for the occasion. More for the Independent Spirit Awards.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPedro

Peggy, we're not supposed to list the worst. Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter and all that crap.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMalick

Ron -- i couldn't find individual photos of them. My normal go to spots changed their design so the individual pics have been harder to find.

February 12, 2020 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Janelle Monae.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Penélope Cruz and Mahershala Ali.

Both beautiful. Both know how to present themselves beautifully.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterdavidm

I thought Sigourney Weaver just looked old, til I looked her up and found out she is 70! So she gets a pass. You didn't show her photo, but I thought Scarlett Johansson in her silvery gold gown just looked so wonderful, classy and beautiful. I'm 100% on board for any man who takes a risk, so even though I think Timothee Chalamet (sp?) looked rather silly, he gets major points from me (and what is that pin he is wearing? looks like a jewel). Kristin Wigg took a chance, and she usually looks so drab that I give her a thumbs up. Maya Rudolph insists on wearing these tents every time and looks ridiculous. Salma Hayek looks like a goddess. Regina King looks great. Bored with any woman who wears black.

I've got lots of opinions (continued)... Greta Gerwig looked classy; loved her necklace. The ladies seem to skip necklaces, and I wonder why, since Harry Winston is happy to loan them bling, and a beautiful necklace is a great way to complete a wonderful look. Loved Olivia Colman's dress; it was as fun as she herself is. Janelle Monae really expresses herself well. Bored with Julia Louis-Dreyfus always wearing form fitting dresses in solid colors; wonder why she doesn't put her hair up and wear something more daring. Rooney Mara always wear something original. Loved every aspect of Anthony Ramos' outfit.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterrrrich7

And the red carpet winners are:

Kaitlyn Dever
Janelle Monae
Anthony Ramos
Beanie Feldstein

Honorable mention to America Ferrera, whose dress isn't super special, but managed to look completely memorable anyway.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCash

Favorites - Timmy, Taika, Dean-Charles, Janelle, Zazie, Regina, and Joanne Tucker (Adam Driver's plus one, who pretty much always looks great).

Most questionable - Kristen's dress, Beanie's make up.

Favorite trend - so many gorgeous necklaces (Zazie, JLD, Florence, Greta, etc.).

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

Favorites - Janelle was the one who did daring right. Otherwise I like the ones who were well-tailored and beautiful - Greta, Beanie, Mindy, Sigourney, Regina.

The worst-dressed was Kristen Wiig. I get that it was supposed to be a joke, but it was so bad that it actually distracted from her presenting for me.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterjules

Janelle and Sandy were my favorites.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCláudio Alves

No Dern. Love her, but this is correct. I would love to know what brand machine she uses though.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterWintour

MEN

Anthony Ramos
Brad Pitt
Timothee Chalamet (I cut him a lot of slack because...I kinda love him and the outfit was meant to make an environmental statement, so points for woke superstar on the rise)

WOMEN

Natalie Portman
Janelle Monae
Saoirse Ronan (though I'm not a huge fan of dresses that fan out below the bust, she still looked luminous, best makeup and bangs for sure!)

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterhepwa

@Cláudio Alves

Mine too. Janelle's was reflecting all the colourful lights during the show.

Sandy's suit will be auctioned off in aid to save Derek Jarman's Prospect cottage. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/feb/04/sandy-powell-bafta-suit-derek-jarman-cottage

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRandy

I can't wait to watch Anthony Ramos slay the red carpets next year on his way to a Golden Globe nom for In the Heights.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterHustler

My top 5:

MEN

1. Anthony Ramos
2. John Cho
3. Lee Sun-kyun
4. Spike Lee
5. Taika Waititi (just because i love him, but in general the men disappointed me this year)

WOMEN

1. Salma Hayek
2. So-dam Park (So-damn pretty...OK bad joke)
3. Brie Larson
4 Natalie Portman
5. Janelle Monae

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

P.S. I find Margot Robbie stuningly gorgeous but for some strange reason she never is one of my favorites in red carpet.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

I'm disappointed Joy Villa didn't attend. Would love to see how the mainly liberal Academy members would react to her 'pro-trump dresses.

And the two WORST dressed were clearly Timothy Chalamet and Billie Eilish. What the hell were they wearing???

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterBette Streep

Best dressed woman: Sigourney Weaver Best Dressed Man Antonio Banderas. Did Chalamet think he was going to a Lakers Game? And what is it with the guy in the dress? This might be daring once but now it's kind of ridiculous.

February 12, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Hi Jaragon, the guy in the dress is Billy Porter, who is personally a fashion icon in my books.
