Streaming Roulette, Jan: Gremlins, Fairy Tales, and Brothers from Another Planet

After the jump you'll find a listing of everything that's new to streaming this month (January 2021). But first we pick two handfuls of titles and randomly freeze them with the scroll bar. Whatever comes up is what we share. Do these images make you want to see (or rewatch) the movie?

[Voice offscreen]: All right, let's go.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITTMAN (1974) on HBOMax
People don't really talk about this in the days of the common false proclamation "everything is available online" but TV from previous decades is much harder to get a hold of than feature films (which have it bad enough). So it's always cool when a streaming service plays one. This telefilm was a big deal in the 1970s winning 9 Emmy awards including Best Actress for Cicely Tyson. In the UK it was released as a feature film and Tyson received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress (losing to Joanne Woodward in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams)

These are the keys to perfect posture.

SYLVIE'S LOVE (2020) on Amazon Prime
That's Erica Gimpel who we 80s kids grew up on (she played Coco on Fame  and Semiramis in the popular North & South miniseries teaching posture to Tessa Thompson for some reason?  Matt reviewed it here

Come in my dearie

INTO THE WOODS (2014) on Disney Plus
Uff we'd forgotten that Johnny Depp, who can't sing, got cast in not one but two major Sondheim musicals (why can't Hollywood learn how to cast musicals? It is *not* difficult. There are so many name actors who have song and dance training). He plays the wolf here and this version of the fairy tale subverting classic was not grown-up enough to deal with that storyline, whoever was cast as the wolf. 3 OSCAR NOMINATIONS.

You can do this!

COBRA KAI (Season 3, 2021) on Netflix
We should have written about this show last year since it's so movie-related... a really fun, at times schmaltzy and repetitive but also thoughtful and unexpected sequel to the 1980s Karate Kid films. It's daring that they risk shifting your allegiances so immediately towards the villain/bully of the original films and also risk confusing your love of the original hero (Ralph Macchio) since he's had life kind of easy since being bullied in high school and hasn't self-reflected much on his own behavior. The constant Elisabeth Shue references in Season 2 had us convinced they were buttering her up to beg her to make a cameo in Season 3.

Who let you in here?!

YOUR NAME ENGRAVED HEREIN (2020) on Netflix
Taiwanese gay film. It won Best Cinematography and Best Original Song at the Golden Horse Awards this year and was also up for Best New Peformer (Edward Chen, pictured above), Best Score, and Best Supporting Actor (Leon Dai).

There weren't any black people in my town. At least I don't think there were.

BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET (1984) on the Criterion Channel
Have you ever seen this John Sayles sci-fi picture? We have a vague memory of it being good (rented it years after the fact) and future Emmy winner Joe Morton being wonderful in the leading role of an alien whose spaceship crash-lands in Harlem. SPECIAL JURY PRIZE, SUNDANCE 1985 (and no, we don't understand how that January 1985 Sundance  prize happened since the movie was released in US theaters in September 1984.)

[stumbling around]: Sorry I'm late

WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN (1994) on Amazon Prime
Cláudio just wrote about Meg Ryan's most beloved performance in When Harry Met Sally but this is the other time she was in the Oscar discussion, nabbing SAG and MTV nominations for her performance as an messy alcoholic wife and mother.

Dad you fought your whole life never for yourself but always for other people. The poor, the exiled, the refugees...

DNA (2020) on Netflix
This was one of the five finalists for the French Oscar submission this year (losing to the lesbian drama Two of Us). It's from director/actress/writer Maïwenn who has Algerian roots and "a meditation on cultural identity". We expect all five of those finalists will score some César nominations later this month.

I'm sorry. I'm just a little tired and cranky.

Now that's what we need here. People who produce.

GREMLINS (1984) and GREMLINS: THE NEW BATCH (1990) on HBOMax
Isn't it weird for HBO to play these right after Christmas when at least the first one is such a Christmas movie? P.S. Strange confession: we've never seen the second one.

Why I'm beginning to feel like a criminal.

42ND STREET (1933) on HBOMax
You know what's odd? When people talk about the actors in the classic musical 42nd Street they're almost always talking about Ruby Keeler's coming out ball as the young understudy who becomes the star of the show -- it's right there in the narrative that it's her picture. But we've never felt that way. The takeaway in the picture is Bebe Daniels (pictured) who is fantastic as the jaded star whose downfall gives Keeler her big break. 2 OSCAR NOMINATIONS INCLUDING BEST PICTURE.

It's a long way

THE MIDNIGHT SKY (2020) on Netflix
Reviews have been less than inspiring. Have you watched yet? George Clooney directs and stars in this post -apocalyptic drama. The visual effects look cool, don't they?

[serious music]

COOL HAND LUKE (1967) on Netflix
Two movies in a single month is not a trend but the fact that Netflix is actually showing not one but two classics from 1967 in a single month (the other being all-time great Bonnie & Clyde) is basically a miracle. Netflix has been anti films made before 2000 for several years now (though a handful of mainstream famous 80s and 90s films show up on occassion) ... maybe the streaming wars have thrown usual behavior out of whack or maybe this is a fluke but it's a happy event, regardless, so watch both of those this month so Netflix realizes people do actually like movies made before their lifetimes. 4 OSCAR NOMINATIONS AND ONE WIN (BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR)

The Ruby Keeler thing has always been so weird to me! It’s like those people didn’t watch the movie. Bebe Daniels walks away with the whole thing and doesn’t break a sweat.

I laughed hard at 42nd Street when Ginger Rogers (and her monocle) tells Ruby Keeler that she (Ginger) cannot star in the musical because she (Ginger) doesn't have the talent. Ginger wasn't a big name then, but watching in hindsight, knowing how Ginger was an all-time great in movie musicals, made me bust up laughing.

Phoebe cates Christmas Monologue is 1 of my favourite bits of 80's cinema, she was such a lovely screen prescence.

Meg Ryan might have been the most beautiful drunk on screen ever but she deserved that Oscar nomination

GREMLINS: THE NEW BATCH is *extraordinary*. A batshit movie, that, and I love it.

MIDNIGHT SKY is fine? Never really lifts off if you pardon the pun.

I've had similar experiences with made-for-TV movies. Stuff like AN EARLY FROST have made their way onto YouTube thanks to people uploading historic queer films, but I went looking a few months ago for THE BURNING BED and could not believe how unattainable it was.

I am definitiely going to check out YOUR NAME ENGRAVED HEREIN. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!

I really wish people were talking about Sylvie's Love more. It's an absolutely lovely old fashioned romance that seems tailor made to this site's demographic.

That's spooky: I just watched The Brother from Another Planet this afternoon (before seeing this post) for a Zoom film club meeting half an hour from now. It's definitely worth seeing—John Sayles is such a unique filmmaker in terms of intercultural themes, and you get to see the early work of Ernest Dickerson (cinematography), Joe Morton, Caroline Aaron and David Strathairn (young and sexy). Fun fact: Sayles wrote an unused script for a Spielberg project that became E.T. several years prior to making this film, and there are definite echoes.

The title of the Cicely Tyson t.v. film needs to be corrected: she played Jane PITTMAN. One of the many amazing things about the movie is Tyson's fearlessness and talent in capturing the essence of the character throughout the span of many decades: the character was supposed to be 110. So strange to realize Cicely Tyson is on the brink of being that old now: she will hit the century mark in 2024. I imagine that there will be an inevitable documentary titled THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS CICELY TYSON when that date rolls around. And what a story hers is. Wish Hollywood had been more woke when she was in her prime working years. I hope she will be a prime contender for the role of Aunt Esther in August Wilson's GEM OF THE OCEAN. It would be fitting in so many ways for to embody the archetypal Ancestor (Aunt Ester) since she is herself such a symbol and icon and treasure.

Jesus. It's Jane PITTMAN.

DNA is one of the worst films of 2020-wildly narcissistic, a thinly-written script, some very weird racial/identity politics, and pacing that makes it feel like it’s 3 hours long instead of 90 minutes. Having seen four of the five French submission finalists, they definitely picked the best film.

I just came in here to say what several people already have -- you should one hundred percent watch the Gremlins sequel, Nat. It is a BLAST of a good time, ridiculous and funny and over the top and I love it so

KC, it's "Cool Hand LUKE" and Nathaniel, it is "The Autobiography of Miss Jane PITTMAN", not Putnam.

Gremlins 2 is a cinephile's orgasm. But you have to be IN the joke. And I am always in the joke, with Joe Dante... it's way better than the original, taking itself way less seriously and embracing Dante's genius rather than to follow the corporate dictations that trapped Dante's will on the first one (and that is the whole point of this satire... it's Dante laughing at Spielberg's Amblin ambition to become the new Disney, when he is more comfortable with being Looney Tunes)

January 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

Great job listing all these movies, of course useful only if you stream from the U.S.
Ps: Mystic Pizza is from 1988, not 1998.

Miss Pittman at last! The list of tv-movies and miniseries that I would love to rewatch and can't find anywhere is quite long. I know some are cheesy or just bad, but I want to watch them anyway.

Meg Ryan has the most perfect hair during the whole movie. That never happens with alcoholics.

January 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

So glad The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is being shown somewhere! Cicely Tyson is extraordinary in it and the film's message is as timely today as it was then.

There is such a wealth of quality movies and miniseries from the 60's/70's/80's that are just laying fallow and unwatched. You would think some streaming service would recognize that there is a niche audience waiting for them. Something like the fantastic Backstairs at the White House with its star packed cast (Lou Gossett, Leslie Uggams, George Kennedy, Lee Grant, Cloris Leachman, Julie Harris, Harry Morgan and Leslie Nielsen among many others) would be a draw I would think.

She was supposedly a lovely woman off-screen so I hate to dump on her but I've never understood Ruby Keeler's stardom. She was a weird sort of triple threat-she couldn't sing, couldn't dance well and couldn't act-but she had a substantial career for quite a few years. I agree that Bebe Daniels along with Una Merkel and Ginger Rogers are the real draw of 42nd Street.

everyone -- sorry about mangling the name. In my head must have been the musical 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM SPELLING BEE

The handsome man next to Bebe Daniels is George Brent who was a WB actor for 20 years where he was sponsored by Better Davis, being his casual lover and favorite leading man, with whom he appeared in 11 films, including Jezebel (1938) and Dark Victory (1939). A curious story about Mr. Brent: He was briefly married to his company partner Ann Sheridan for nine months. The reason for the separation: A Rochester (NY) newspaper, in its article on his death, included the story that he came home one night to find his wife, Ann Sheridan, in bed with Errol Flynn. The latter one escaped through a window. 😲

Movie suggestions with George Brent:
(in addition to those already mentioned)

More Than a Secretary(1936) Comedy with Jean Arthur.

The Rains Came(1939) melodrama/disaster movie with Tyrone Power and Myrna Loy.

Experiment Perilous(1944) Darker version of Gaslight with Hedy Lamarr more beautiful than ever and with an incredible performance .

The Spiral Staircase(1946) Horror with Ethel Barrymore.

Luxury Liner(1948) MGM musical with Jane Powell

The real MVP of 42nd Street is Warner Baxter. His manic performance is simply incredible.

The unsung heroes of Cool Hand Luke are Strother Martin, who by my calculations stole every scene he was ever in; and Jo Van Fleet, whose short screen time is so powerful, she's easily my choice for Best Supporting Actress of 1967.

Right there in that Japanese Noir Collection, one of the 10 best movies I've ever seen, Akira Kurosawa's High and Low. Perfection.

I've found some random TV movies on YouTube, including the Rasputin movie that was discussed on here the other day. It looks like Miss Jane Pittman is on there too.

I may sound like a broken record but I don't feel it's said enough: Cicely Tyson gives one of the best performances ever in THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITTMAN and I still haven't found a nominated Oscar performance in the lead actress category as good as this.

Your Name Engraved Herein's depiction of unabashed adolescent same-sex passion, and its doomed conclusion reduced me into an emotional wreck. Would appreciate your personal take.

I would love a piece on the Criterion Japanese noir series. I'm not sure where to start (I've seen the Kurosawas).

Not quite there but the Korean (South!) series Kingdom that is currently on Netflix is one of the more Kurosawa-esque productions I've seen in a long time, gripping stuff.

And another Gremlins 2 appreciatiative gushing, it has more in common with a subversive exercise like Robocop than the first film and it's all the better for it, so many nods to classic monster horror and genuine "what the hell am I watching" moments. When the gremlins take over the screen, on the VHS it went to a staticy screen rather than a cinema screen....
