Pfeiffer Pfriday takes on "The Fabulous Baker Boys"
by Nathaniel R
Have you been listening to the podcast "Pfeiffer Pfridays"? Each week Jerry and Michael revisit, or screen for the pfirst time, a Pfeiffer movie. Sometimes they have guests in tow. They're not going in chronological order but hopping around. This weekend marks their 30th episode so they're making whoopie and covering one of the greatest pfilms of the 1980s: The Fabulous Baker Boys. Guest starring... me!
We get into it, not just the Pfeiffer ascendance into the pantheon of it all, but the Bridges brothers character arcs, Jennifer Tilly's hilarious supporting role, the movie's Old Hollywood glamour, the screenplay, the cinematography, and the 1989 Oscar race.

Not just one of the great pfilms of the 80s. It's really one of the great films of the 80s.
Why do I get the feeling that Film Twitter hasn't seen this movie in a while? It's hardly ever mentioned.
Poor Jessica Tandy!...π²π²π²ππ
Goes great after the superior Tandy Thursday's. ;)
Congratulations on your Golden Globe, Michelle; itβs downright adorable how your glamour-obsessed fans continue to try to convince anyone wiling to listen that Jessica Tandy stole your Oscar.
I agree FBB is an above average film, without indulging in 89er rhetoric and hyperbole.
In my opinion, Isabelle Adjani was the one who should have gotten the Oscar that year, her performance in Camille Claudel was just amazing.
Adjani was above Pfeiffer that year, the logical brain will concede you that much Bryan.
I adore this movie, so classy, smart, nostalgic.
It's the greatest Pfeiffer performance together with her Catwoman.
And, yes, she should have won.
I'm with Pauline Collins
Jessica Lange!
Ferdi saying that is like saying Hotlanta. Nobody says that, but yes.
Well Hillary and brookesboy, you aren't the most wrong!
Gene Siskel, on SNEEK PREVIEWS said she deserved to win that year. Ebert replied something about how Tandy was superior because she covered her character over a longer time span. Siskel shot back, not really. They're both basically two hour movies. (In fact, FBB is actually longer than DMD.)
Siskel could be so cool in the way he dismissed Ebert's conventional wisdom.
The Fabulous Baker Boys is to MP what Pretty Woman is to JR. Her star quality never been so demanded. And her charm left the awards comitees all bewildered and surrendered.
I voted for Jessica Tandy.
Meryl Streep, so did I. I tried to tick my name on the ballot, but it was the only time my conscience wouldn't let me. Tandy was too wonderful. My true pfans agree.
@nathaniel, I hadn't heard of the podcast and took a listen to their Love Field episode. The discussion was great, so going to listen to more, including this FBB episode. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
