The 13th Annual Team Experience Awards: NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCEMENT!

THE BRUTALIST | © A24
The Brutalist leads the nominations for the 13th annual Team Experience Awards. Brady Corbet's Oscar player scored in seven categories, including Best Picture, Director, and Actor. The film premiered on digital today, so if you missed it in theaters, it's time to give this epic a look. Many other Oscar frontrunners appeared on our ballots, with every one of AMPAS' Best Picture nominees featured in one category or another. As always, it's a fascinating mix of prestige fare and outré offerings, awards magnets, and obscure titles that got here on the basis of a few writers' burning passion. These awards are a testament to the variety of opinions featured on The Film Experience, having been voted by several members of its team. With the notable exception of Nathaniel, whose Film Bitch Awards are another matter altogether.

FUN FACTS & FIGURES
- In total, 52 films received votes in the Best Picture category.
- In total, 87 performances received votes across the four acting categories.
- With seven nominations, The Brutalist is this year's nomination leader. Last year, even the second-most-nominated film had more mentions. As a reminder, in 2024, Poor Things received 12 nominations and Barbie nine.
- As is starting to happen more and more often at the Team Experience Awards, Close Your Eyes was nominated for Best Picture and nothing else.
- Dune: Part Two had the inverse fate of Close Your Eyes. Though it scored five nominations, none of those were for Best Picture.
- Across these 20 categories, the Team Experience managed to recognize 47 features. The numbers are up from last year's 39. This is also significantly more than the Academy, whose voting body nominated a grand total of 35 feature films.
- In terms of matching the Academy's taste, the Team Experience had very similar ballots in the Best Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, and Animated Feature categories. In those three cases, it was a 4/5 match.
- Though there are some vocal opponents to category fraud in the Team Experience, we are a heterogeneous group whose members often disagree with each other. This year, Kieran Culkin scored a Best Supporting Actor nomination after featuring in both ballots. However, he didn't get enough Best Actor votes to appear in that race.
- Ariana Grande in Wicked and Tilda Swinton in Problemista also received votes for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
- Sebastian Stan was the only actor who received votes for multiple performances. However, unlike AMPAS, the Team Experience writers went with his Silver Bear-winning turn in A Different Man as opposed to his Oscar-nominated work in The Apprentice.

always great fun to read! I'm pissed about Culkin but what can you do?!
Like the majority of awards bodies this season, this one sees Culkin as supporting and has little use for Guadagnino's 2024 output (two nods, neither for Queer).
Where is Demi, Qualley & Fargeat (in Dir & Org Scrplay)???!!
I thot u guys luv it??
Color me Shooked at The Substance's above the line snubs!!
Thrilled to see my fave of the year Ghostlight recognized. Hopefully the acknowledgment will bring more viewers to this extraordinary film.
If The Substance's much heralded co-lead performances & scrplay can't even get a mention fr the open minded, actressexual Team Experience members, I doubt it will fare well w the more conventional skewed Academy members.
I know the last 20 min bat-shit crazy bloody gore is rather off-putting to alotsa pple (me included) lol
If Demi loses SAG this sun to Mikey, then I tink the race is over for her.
My beloved CHALLENGERS relegated to just a couple tech noms, Oh well.
Surprised you guys kept Saldana and Culkin in supporting! But the rest of those supporting nods are nearly flawless (would've liked one of those Challenger boys to have made it through).
"Anna Baryshnikov, LOVE LIES BLEEDING"
I know that's right. Scene-stealer. Blatantly ignored this season thanks to category fraud. Katy O'Brien and Kristen Stewart are co-leads; Anna Baryshnikov and Ed Harris are supporting. All do great work in this film.
Team Experience seems to be trending more mainstream in its tastes. Even the Oscars recognized The Substance more enthusiastically.
Love having some movie recommendations to check out from this list. But justice for songwriters! Where’s the best original song?
@Nathaniel R - This is not a democracy; this is The Film Experience. You should exercise your powers to overturn category fraud nominations!
It's always fun to see new choices!
I'm gonna comment on the actress categories, because that's what we all care about, isn't it?
BEST ACTRESS
Marianne Jean-Baptiste, HARD TRUTHS (100% YES)
Angelina Jolie, MARIA (100% NO)
Nicole Kidman, BABYGIRL (Yay!)
Mikey Madison, ANORA (She holds this kinda overrated movie together)
Fernanda Torres, I'M STILL HERE (Seeing it this week finally!)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Michele Austin, HARD TRUTHS (Liked her, didn't love her)
Monica Barbaro, A COMPLETE UNKNOWN (Why? I don't get the love for this nothing performance and movie at all.)
Anna Baryshnikov, LOVE LIES BLEEDING (Fantastic, unexpected choice!)
Joan Chen, DÌDI (Yes!)
Zoë Saldaña, EMILIA PÉREZ (Surprised it was Zoe and not Adriana Paz who made it here)
who are these people on Team Experience that do not think Demi Moore is one of Top 5 Best Actress contenders?
IDENTIFY YOURSELVES! lol
Happy to see Jolie on the list. I’ve never cared for her as an actress but she’s excellent in Maria—weird that she finally gave such a great performance and couldn’t get nominated.
I mean this as a compliment, but you see the hard work and preparation that went into it, which I found really refreshing and winning. These days I'm in the mood to see that kind of discipline/dedication onscreen rather than the "I make five miniseries in a row" style of working certain other A-list actresses prefer.
When you're that rich and famous and don't need to work very often (a luxury), that's exactly what you should be doing.
I, too, have a quarrel with the Best Actress nominees. But mine is the incomprehensible omission of Ilinca Manolache in Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World. In fact, that's where my gripes start. This movie should have received 4 or 5 more nominations, easy.
Disappointed that Jeremy Strong wasn't nominated, but praise for nominating Mark Eydelshteyn in Anora. I like Yuri Borisov, but Eydelshteyn's performance is clearly superior - as is Karren Karagulian's, but let's take things one at a time.
As I was the one who gathered and counted votes this year, I guess I could respond to some of these.
NATHANIEL R.: You have no idea how much I wanted to throw away the category fraud votes. Another popular fraudster this year was Josh O'Connor in CHALLENGERS, but he didn't get enough votes to make the ballot.
Frank Zappa -- CHALLENGERS and QUEER received votes in various categories, including Picture. Sadly, it wasn't enough to get into any additional lineups. Craig came closest. He finished in a three-way tie for sixth place. His runner-up brethren were Cillian Murphy in SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE and Glen Powell in HIT MAN.
Finbar McBride -- I was also pleased by some GHOSTLIGHT love from our team. it came close to an Ensemble nomination, too!
Ryan T. -- The writers vote according to the categories they feel best fit the performances. There are no rules, like in the Oscars. Some of them, like me, are bothered by category fraud. Others aren't.
Robert G. -- I have to be honest; hers is the nomination that surprised me the most. I've had her in my personal Best Supporting Actress for ages, but I never thought she'd get enough votes here. Very pleased to have been proven wrong.
Claran912 -- THE SUBSTANCE received votes for Picture, Director, and Actress. Just not enough to be nominated.
whunk -- A voting body that recognizes stuff like SAMSARA and THE PEOPLE'S JOKER can hardly be called mainstream, no? I think we are a good mix of tastes and predilections—some more mainstream, others less so.
Tom M -- I counted Guadagnino in the CHALLENGERS music nomination since he wrote "Compress/Repress," and the writers from the two songs I SAW THE TV GLOW submitted for Oscar consideration.
Sad Man -- Zoë Saldaña was the only actress from EMILIA PÉREZ to receive any vote from the Team Experience writers. However, the film was mentioned in other categories, including Picture and Director.
DAVID S -- Surprisingly enough, only two writers included Moore in their Best Actress votes. I don't feel it's so much a matter of folks not liking her performance. It's more about loving others even more.
Amy Camus -- Completely agree with almost everything you say but The Film Experience is a democracy. And sadly, I don't think a lot of the writers have seen DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD. It got thoe two nominations on the basis of passionate love from a select few. It also received votes in many other categories, including Picture.
cal -- though they don't allow me into this group award ;) the film bitch awards are coming - my target is this weekend to begin and you will not see the category fraud there ;)
Everyone -- i too was shocked by Demi and The Substance's absence in the top categories. I really thought my whole team loved it.
Mark before Yura did we see the same film,Yura saved that film,Mark was the worst thing about it even less bearable than Madison,I don't get the love for this film at all.
No Demi and substituted for Jolie's bad lipsyncing and Kidman's unexpressive face.
Joan Chen yes well done!
It's a democracy and you still frauded the supporting categories.
The Room Next door was a bore.
@Nat
I'm rooting for Demi—it's an infectious campaign, I think the movie is super stylish and she's perfect in it. But I wouldn't say her performance is a towering achievement...I could see her not making my top five once I've seen everything.
More surprising that The Substance wouldn't crack the best picture top 10 (!). I can very very easily give that movie credit as one of the year's ten best films, and my taste is pretty conventional.
If anyone complains about category fraud at The Film Experience in the future, I'll remind them that even here Kieran Culkin was nominated in supporting role. So those complaints will no longer make sense.
And I'm thinking that Demi Moore won't win the Oscar. If The Film Experience didn't nominate her here, what can I expect from the Oscars?
Harmodio -- i preeminently object to this reminder. I cannot control other people's opinions and I will adamantly complain about category fraud for as long as I breathe haha.
as for Demi, while I think an upset is possible, I'm not quite convinced that Mikey Madison or Fernanda Torres have strong enough fanbases to overcome the passion of the industry fans that got The Substance into 5 Oscar categories despite their usual genre biases. I'm still predicting Demi. I can't see her losing SAG.
DK -- you see the hard work that went into Angelina's work and I see someone whose effort is not paying off because where she needed the effort most (lipsynching) she didn't put in the work. I never once believed that she was singing. I am SHOCKED that enough of the team members here loved that performance for it to place (she doesn't make my top 12 even)
@Harmodio: "If The Film Experience didn't nominate her here, what can I expect from the Oscars?"
Honestly? A voting body with a bigger percentage of women voters, for starters. Sorry TFE, but it's embarrassing that you voted for Jolie over Moore.
Thanks for the clarification, Cláudio.
I should praise the panel for the Eydelshtein nomination. I think his performance is essential to the film's success, but I gave up on banging that drum when Yura became the season's preferred face of Anora's supporting cast.
Harmodio -- Don't count on me ever stopping my complaints about category fraud, either.
I am glad our host saw what some of us saw in Jolie.
The terrible lipsyncing took me right out of the film and i'm surprised the director let the film be seen like that
As soon as she opened her gob I was not convinced in her portayal from that moment on despite some strong acting in parts.
She basically did Angelina's idea of Callas without the research, did she just watch 1 or 2 grainy YouTube videos, nothing like her, sounded nothing like her and basically a failure.
Why is no-one talking about Saoirse Ronan this season in The Outrun, she's wonderful in it and only Bafta recognised her and more obviously the Irish film awards were they gave her their Lead and Supporting awards.
Overkill on rewarding her for the awful, Blitz but for The Outrun she is way above most of the Oscar and Film Experience nominees.
I was surprised not to love Baptiste, she pushes too hard and quite honestly the whole role felt forced, she never seemed like the wife of that man or the mother of her son,the dialogue was most of the time terrible.
@ jules: Your math is way too off, but if that makes you feel better, go on then.
I am not surprised that Demi Moore missed. Most TFE voters watch movies. They likely endured The Scarlet Letter. Striptease, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, The Butcher's Wife, St. Elmo's Fire, The Juror, Passion of Mind, Nothing But Trouble and other problematic films in her past that demonstrate she struggles when faced with roles that have dialogue requiring emotion and a semblance of reality. Moore only shines in projects where she can convey her character with minimal speaking requirements. Her popcorn actress speech is moving but also a bit too much on the nose.
@Finbar,I don't like your assumption that I endured her films, she's been bad in some but no worse than a Bullock or a Diaz or a Judd or even a Renee and even in their travesties they are never less than enjoyable ok maybe not All About Steve
The Juror she is solid and believable in it and has great chemistry with Levitt as her son and shows real fear of Baldwin.
Charlie's Angels Full Throttle has fun with the villain role.
Striptease better with the drama parts and sometimes forgets to be humourous, not all her fault.
St Elmo's Fire one of her best early turns, most people would admit she livens that film up and is believable as Jules.
The other films you mention esp The Scarlet Letter where even Oldman and Duvall are downright bad the films problems are not all her fault.
She is very good in Ghost and Indecent Proposal two of her best 90's roles and watchable in a lot of other stuff like Disclosure GI Jane,Margin Call,Flawless and The Butchers Wife.
I don't think she's the greatest thespian in the world but neither is she wooden but sometimes miscast or most of the time not her movies biggest problem.
I would rather watch her than than a lauded actress like the morose Isabelle Huppert anyday of the week.
It has never been cool amongst cinephiles to like Demi until this year when she made something that was seen as serious and worth their time.
Interesting nominations. The best actress nominees are very good though Jolie won't be in my lineup. I do think it's a committed performance and I agree the lipsynching is atrocious but she is very moving in dramatic parts even though the dialogue is clunky in some places.
I am especially happy that Nicole and Marianne are included; very expressive performances from both and full of depth.
Really surprised that Barbarro is in the supporting line up; not that I think she is bad but it didn't leave impression to me but maybe I should rewatch.
I wonder if category fraud is so rampant because people are so desensitized to it. There is always argument of POV that justifies the supporting placement but I think it's now just an easy way out to justify the fraud.
For me, Saldana and Culkin are both leads. I might be convinced that Saldana is supporting in some way but definitely not Culkin. Beside screen time percentage, it's basically a duo. There will be no movie without him. At this point, it's so funny that critics even succumb to this. And people keep saying, if that is the only way to get certain actor to be nominated if they are put in supporting, then the fraud is ok. Then what to make of the real supporting actor? They are now called "glorified cameo". It's maddening.
FWIW to CHALLENGER fans, it was my own #1!
Pleasantly surprised by the appearances of Keith Kupferer, Angelina Jolie, and September 5 for ensemble, as they were all on my own ballot.
Agree that Culkin is category fraud, but I've come to the conclusion that Saldana is not, or at least there's a more viable argument she's supporting. Her character really retreats to supporting once Emilia becomes more foregrounded.
I haven't seen The Substance because I can't do body horror, so I obviously couldn't vote for it. But I was also surprised it didn't perform better.
I thought I was the only one who thinks that Demi Moore over salesed her speech at the Globes as a "debt" winner, she is good in the movie but not espectacular as many says so, I'm not surprised been out of this
The real omission for me was the lead and supporting women of The Girl With the Needle and the cinematography. I also included in many other categories but that are the most notorious absences for me
César Gaytan -- Funnily enough, Dyrholm was on a three-way tie for the sixth place in Best Supporting Actress. So she got pretty close, only one point away from our fifth placer. THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE also received votes in Best Picture, Director, Actress, Film Not in the English Language, and Cinematography.
