The Golden Rise of Lupita Nyong'o

Sure, she lost the Golden Globe last night to JLaw's razzle dazzle in American Hustle, but is there anyone conscious of social media / the internet / the movies who doesn't think Lupita Nyong'o has emerged as a winner* last night? She'll win numerous Best Dressed lists for the Ralph Lauren cape look even if she doesn't have a statue to go with it.

This is Lupita, overachieving, in the last 9 days alone! We'll leave it to this Best Supporting Actress to figure out how to top these looks come SAG weekend and Oscar night.

The Darling of the Red Carpet is certainly a more flattering title than "Queen of the Fields" as Master Epps horrifically dubs his abused Patsey in 12 Years a Slave. 

Aren't you dying to know what else Lupita has in her to show us onscreen? Here's to Hollywood and its most powerful directors shaking off their perpetual issue with black actresses (rarely giving them multiple chances to shine) and allowing her the run of the place. Let's give Viola and Lupita their pick of roles for the next couple of years -- we'd all surely reap the rewards.

Ohmygod I've been tweeting but I shall start live-bloging or at least I'll recap. I dunno. We'll see. It's almost here. It's only fitting that we watch Emma Thompson RUNNING down the red carpet. For reasons. When she took her shoes off with me, I thought it was an unusual moment but it turns out it's kind of Emma's shtick this season!

Sing Out, Luise. You're 104 !

We usually take time each January 12th to count down the oldest living Oscar honorees on Luise Rainer's birthday (January 12th, 1910) but since we recently did a significantly long post on oldest living actors of note and we've had so many sad goodbyes in the past month (Joan, Peter, Martha & Juanita), we're just going to focus on Luise Rainer & her other records.

This gorgeous photo was taken four years ago when Luise had the big "100". I think you have to admit that "The Viennese Teardrop" aged really well! Quitting Hollywood so early seemed to be good for her. Four years later she's still alive and kicking and currently living in the UK.

I had hoped to do something more focused on The Good Earth (1937) -- which we've never discussed here at TFE -- but I ran out of time. Maybe next year for Luise's 105th since she's clearly not going anywhere. Luise currently holds not just one Oscar record but four of them, the last two she'll be able to keep forever since "first to ____" cannot be unbroken with time but the second record will be swiped if Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle prevails on March 2nd, 2014 (but more on that this Thursday) 

Rainer in The Great Ziegfeld (1936... a role which would surely be demoted to supporting in today's Oscars) and The Good Earth (1937)

1. She's the oldest living Oscar winner
2. She's the youngest performer to ever win two Oscars. She was 28 when she won the second, so Jodie Foster just failed to top her record with that Silence of the Lambs win at the age of 29)
3. She the first actor to win two Oscars (Spencer Tracy & Bette Davis both won their second Oscars in 1938, the year after Rainer's double)
4. She's the first actor to win back-to-back Oscars (36/37 both in Best Actress). Only four other performers have ever won back-to-back Oscars though surely Russell Crowe came close at the turn of the millenium:
   
   • Spencer Tracy (37/38 both in Best Actor)
   • Katharine Hepburn (67/68 both in Best Actress)
   • Jason Robards (76/77 both in Best Supporting Actor)

Predictable Sequel News of the Moment
Cinema Blend Terminator Genesis which is already on two strikes (first you don't reboot a series based on time travel which already allows do-overs without pretending originals didn't happen / second they already practiced exceptionally uninteresting casting by getting TV girl badass to play movie girl badass) is now looking for the male lead. I hated the latest Die Hard but Jai Courtney is super nice to look at so can I root for him?
/Film Avatar Land  begins construction in Florida. James Cameron is helping design it because, you know, anything to slow down his filmmaking. I am only interested in going to a land like this if they really amp up virtual technology and you get to be actually inside the body of a huge blue alien with great abs and have hot virtual sex with hair braids

I feel like you could charge a lot of money for that. The park plans an opening to coincide with the Avatar sequels in 2016/2017... or if I know James Cameron, 2019/2020.
