ICYMI: Makeup and Hairstylists Guild Winners

by Nathaniel R

Mike Marino, who assisted Rick Baker for years, working on prosthetics for Coming 2 America

The Make-Up and Hair Stylists Guild held their awards this past Saturday so you might have already heard who won. The big winner was Amazon's Coming 2 America which won three prizes: Contemporary Makeup, Contemporary Hairstyling, and (most surprisingly given the competition) Special Effects Makeup. This does not necessarily mean it's going to win the Oscar as it has formidable competition from Cruella and Dune and the voting body is different. The winners are after the jump...

"Where we are now on TV" - annual GLAAD report

by Nathaniel R

Yellowjackets helped Showtime stay on top in terms of LGBTQ representation

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has released their annual WHERE WE ARE NOW ON TV report. The report looks at LGBTQ+ representation via series regulars or recurring characters on scripted television shows across the three platforms: broadcast, cable, and streaming. It covers shows airing between June 1st, 2021 and May 31st, 2022. The shows that haven't aired yet are stastically factored in only when casting has been confirmed by content providers (Notably Apple TV+ AND Disney+ declined to confirm when it came to unaired shows) so the report might have discrepancies.

Herewith are 10 notes on the report, in no particular order...

"sweetheart..."

Which Best Actress would you have voted for 25 years ago in the Oscar race?

  • Brenda Blethyn, Secrets & Lies (BAFTA, GLOBE, LAFCA, CANNES, BSFC)
  • Diane Keaton, Marvin's Room
  • Frances McDormand, Fargo (SAG, OSCAR, NBR, CFCA, KCFCC, CCA, SEFCA)
  • Kristin Scott Thomas, The English Patient (NBR *supporting)
  • Emily Watson, Breaking The Waves (NYFCC, NSFC)

This is why we do Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals here at TFE. It's easier that way! Anyway... 1996 was one of those years like 1950, 1974, 1987, 1995, or 2006 that Best Actress fans will be debating forever. Do you think 2021/22 will be like that or will we look back on the current race as a mild 'coulda been better' one?

Donnie Linko

Esquire wonderful profile of Jake Gyllenhaal who is (maybe) at a career crossroads
Shadow and Act suggests actresses for the upcoming Angela Davis biopic. It's certainly going to be a killer role for the right person. Have any suggestions of your own?
Independent Sydney Sweeney talks about her work on Euphoria and that people aren't paying attention to the performance, just the nudity
Playbill Antonio Banderas is doing Sondheim's Company as Bobby in Spain right now. He's surely the oldest Bobby ever (at 61 when the plot is very much about being in your 30s) but we'd so love to see this.
