DGA Nominees: Anderson, Branagh, Campion, Spielberg, Villeneuve

by Nathaniel R

And now the 'super thursday' of Guild Awards comes to an end with the Directors Guild of America nominations. The Directors Guild has historically been the best 'predictor' as to the Best Picture lineup though that distinction ceased being really important in 2009 when Oscar expanded its Best Picture lineup. Since then we've only seen one DGA Feature Film nominee that didnt show up in Oscar's Best Picture list (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) though we've several several DGA nominees who didn't show up in the parallel Oscar list for Best Director. Make sense? Okay, let's discuss their nominees...

Sundance: Rebecca Hall goes bugsh*t in the unhinged 'Resurrection'

by Jason Adams

Wanna know how you're in the hands of a smart filmmaker? Well there are two signs, and funny enough they both involve Rebecca Hall. The first sign is thatthey hire Rebecca Hall. That's as smart as it gets! They do that much you know you're in good hands. ACE Eddie Awards split on musicals, embracing "tick tick... BOOM!" while shunning "West Side Story"

by Nathaniel R

a split decision on the big musicals of 2021

The American Cinema Editor's Guild is the second of four guilds to announce on this unofficial "Super Thursday" in which PGA, ACE, DGA, and WGA are all announcing... It's the last big precursor announcement before Oscar nominations on February 8th. The biggest surprise if that they've shunned the energetic precision of West Side Story in Best Editing but somehow Don't Look Up (with considerable pacing / rhythm problems) was honored. tick, tick... BOOM!'s nomination is interesting given the West Side Story cold shoulder. The list of nominees and a few more comments after the jump...

Producers Guild Awards say 'You can't sit with us!' to the blockbusters

by Nathaniel R

The Producers Guild of America has spoken and even though in past years they've shown a fondness for superheros and blockbusters nominating films like Star Trek, Wonder Woman, and Deadpool, this year they've dashed the Oscar dreams of the 8th Spider-Man movie and the 25th official James Bond movie and selected only Dune to represent big franchise filmmaking. The "surprise" nomination, though it really shouldn't be considered a surprise given that they even nominated Molly's Game, was Aaron Sorkin's Being the Ricardos. Their nominees are as follows...
