"Happening" and "Annette" win at the Lumières

by Nathaniel R

Some of you may recall that we were thrilled when Happening (also known as L'Evenement) won the Golden Lion at Venice this past September. Audrey Diwan's abortion drama, set in the 1960s when the procedure was still illegal in France, is a riveting film with a superb lead performance. It's also apparently popular in France since it's just won the top prize at the 27th annual Lumière Awards, France's other big movie award beyond their top industry prize (the César). César nominations hit on January 26th so we'll see how films like Titane and Happening and Annette do there, but we already know what the Lumières thought of those three films. The complete list of nominations and wins are after the jump. If we've written about the films there's a link...

2nd Annual "Gold List" Honoring Asian Achievements in Film

by Nathaniel R

Shang-Chi

Hello, awards fans. Shang-Chi and Drive My Car both took multiple prizes this year while The Green Knight played bridesmaid with multiple honorable mentions. The full list of winners and honorable mentions is after the jump...

As people discuss Joel Coen's adaptation of Shakespeare's Scottish play, talks of Oscar are nearly unavoidable - Denzel Washington is poised to earn his ninth acting nomination for the titular role. However, while his awards triumph feels obvious, one shouldn't think that playing the Bard's most famous roles is an easy ticket to the Oscars. Many major adaptations have been snubbed over the years, and even when the Academy embraces a Shakespearean flick, it rarely extends such love to its cast.

Look no further than Sir Ian McKellen's first major bid at big-screen stardom. In 1995, after starring in a famed stage production directed by Richard Eyre, the actor decided to take that Richard III to the movies…

JK Simmons picks up his first prize for Being the Ricardos

Another week. Another crowded list of critics associations announcing their "Bests". There's still a lot of repetition but there are a couple of minor points of interest, some annoying and some delightful in this particular roundup. Here are the 12 latest critics groups to announce after the jump...
