"Time" keeps racking up the honors

The Cinema Eye Honors are now in their 14th year and considered an influential prize for documentary films. Prison sentence justice movie Time leads the nominations with six but two competitors for the top prize, Romania's political corruption doc Collective (Romania's Oscar submission) and Norway's farm doc Gunda aren't far behind with four nominations.

Doc Corner: A 'Mayor' in Palestine

Documentaries about bureaucracy can be tricky. Not everybody has the luxury of being Frederick Wiseman and be given over four hours to luxuriate in the minutiae of a major city’s political processes like he did in this year’s City Hall. And if nothing particularly interesting happens then all you’re left with is a movie about people pushing paper around for 90 minutes, which would thrill me by doubtful many others. American director David Osit is at something of an advantage with Mayor, however; set in the city of Ramallah in the Palestinian West Bank.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Osit has missed the obvious story right in front of his face. For the opening stretches of Mayor, about Ramallah’s Mayor Musa Hadid, the director is seemingly content to focus on administrative nonsense including an amusing, extended narrative strand around Hadid’s inability to grasp the concept of city branding (as a public servant myself, I related). I was beginning to think that this film would be just a curious diversion showing how life in the Palestinian National Authority does carry on.

But Osit proves to be much smarter than that in how he has structured Mayor...

Critics Choice Documentary Awards 2020

It's the fifth year since the Critics Choice Awards spun off their documentary honors until a whole sidebar awards. I personally abstain from these as I don't see enough documentaries. Our doc corner guru Glenn Dunks would be an ideal voter, though. If he wrote about these winning films, there's a link. The big winners were Dick Johnson is Dead with the two top wins and an additional honor and My Octopus Teacher with two wins as well. The full list of wins is after the jump...

Pt 1 - Sizing up Netflix's contenders in all 23 Oscar categories

It is already November and the pandemic rages on.  With moviegoing risky or unavailable movielovers have turned to streamers for their film consumption. The Academy has even acknowledged this shift in how we consume films by allowing films to qualify for the Oscars even if they only went streaming.  While the past few years have seen the rise of streaming wars (Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV+, and Disney+, etcetera), nobody has been able to match the sheer quantity of content that Netflix has been producing or acquiring. Netflix could well dominate this awards season. But by how much?

Important Caveat: Do note that Netflix has not announced the entirety of its slate through February 28, 2021, the final day of eligibility for this Oscars; pieces are still moving and more films will probably show up. With that, here are Netflix’s contenders in all 23 Oscar categories...

Oscar's Documentary Feature Race Heats Up

According to the Wrap, AMPAS has 86 films currently available to CONSIDER for their Documentary branch members. The list will grow until some point in January (the list generally runs anywhere from 120-170 titles), and then the Documentary Branch will whittle it down to 15 contenders before the final nomination balloting.

If we've written about them -- but mostly if Glenn has written about them ;) -- there's a link in the list that follows. We've also indicated which are currently streaming if you'd like to watch any of them. The prestigious International Documentary Association has 30 shortlisted titles  (from which they'll draw their eventual nominations) and we've also mentioned the 14 titles that were nominated by the Critics Choice Documentary Awards for Best Documentary Feature. Why there are so many nominees we don't know! (If 5 is good enough for Oscar)
