What did you see over the weekend?

by Nathaniel R

Family movies The Bad Guys and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continued to do well this past weekend but Liam Neeson's latest revenge thriller (it's called Memory but deja vu would be more accurate since he makes so many of these programmers) struggled to generate any interest. The big box office story (until Doctor Strange next weekend) remains the Daniels hilarious action-comedy-sci-fi-oddity Everything Everywhere All At Once. It was actually up 2% from last weekend; You're not supposed to go up on subsequent weeks, only down! That's the power of true Word of Mouth hits and they're few and far between in the current era since mainstream moviegoing is almost exclusively led by brand awareness rather than a combo of that and word of mouth as in ye olden times of, oh, 10-15 years ago...

What did you see this week?

What did you see this weekend? I binged Heartstoppers on Netflix (having loved the webcomic it was based on), watched a few Coachella performances (Orville Peck, Maggie Rogers, and Finneas) but the highlight was definitely trekking to the theater to see The Northman with friends. Make sure to listen in to conversations from your fellow moviegoers if you see it. You'll hear lots of variations of "that was insane". The sweat lodge / Dafoe scene early in the film and the big Kidman monologue scene late in the film really get people talking if our Friday night eavesdropping was any general indication. Perhaps we should do a spoiler-heavy review (for those who've seen it only -- you should not read reviews before you see this one).

What did you see this past weekend?

by Nathaniel R

Proving once again that the public will turn out for movies with superpowers and little else, Morbius opened to $39 million despite terrible buzz and unfriendly reviews. Of course it helped that the studios are hardly releasing any big movies of late so there wasn't much competition for eyeballs. But the big story this weekend was what was happening in limited release...

Today's magic number is 16. Let's talk 2016

by Nathaniel R

It is 16 days until the Oscars. Since you're all being so freakishly quiet, let's talk about something we know you'll have an opinion about: 2016. Oscar was all about Emma Stone in La La Land and Moonlight in general with pockets of support for Arrival and Manchester by the Sea and Fences. And for some reason Oscar decided Mel Gibson was cool again via Hacksaw Ridge. If you could change one thing about the Oscar outcomes of 2016 what would it be?

I have one other question for you about the Oscars after the jump...

'Worst Person...' and the 10 most successful Norwegian films in the US

by Nathaniel R

Talking about weekend box office isn't as much fun as it was pre-pandemic since it matters less and less with more films opting for streaming only. So let's get super niche instead. With the Oscar nominated The Worst Person in the World doing terrific business in the nation's arthouses -- I even heard strangers talking about it on the subway in NYC, always a great sign that an arthouse film has caught on -- let's talk about how Norwegian films fare at the Oscars and with US moviegoers...
