Power Ranking the Songs and Performances from "White Christmas"

by Ben Miller

WHITE CHRISTMAS (1954) Michael Curtiz | © Paramount Pictures

In my house, few Christmas traditions persevere more than my wife's annual viewings of 1954's White Christmas. From a few days after Thanksgiving, up until Christmas day, three yearly screenings are par for the course. With such an ingrained viewing experience, I feel uniquely qualified to power rank the songs and performances from Irving Berlin's holiday classic...

Merry Christmas!

by Cláudio Alves

It's the season to be jolly, so happy holidays to all The Film Experience readers, wherever you are across the globe.

I don't know about you, but in my family, there's a tradition of watching a film together on Christmas day, and I'm still pondering our options for today. Maybe we should go with the All of Us Strangers screener since that is technically a Christmas movie. One of its best scenes embraces all that barbed nostalgia and merry melancholia, lights twinkling while the Pet Shop Boys' “Always On My Mind” sounds off its queer lament in the background. Then again, that's probably not the merriest of choices, a gift of tears rather than cheers. Still, it's a beautiful film whose adaptation choices probably deserve a post of their own. But that's a matter for another time. Today, we celebrate.

Do you have a similar tradition? If so, what movie will do the honors in 2023? And beyond Andrew Haigh's ghost story, is there another film from this year that joins your Christmas canon?

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Merry merry to all who celebrate anything this time of year. Two questions for you today

  • What's the movie gift you want most this season?
  • What New Years resolution are you hoping someone in Hollywood makes?

The team is mostly at family or friend gatherings today --I myself am in California meeting the boyfriends family for the first time. Sacramento to be exact so I have been referencing Lady Bird nonstop and threatening to throw myself out of moving cars for dramatic effect. We'll be back shortly with more Oscar volleys, "split decisions" when we disagree on movies, and... drumroll plz... "Year in Review" list-mania. In the meantime check out the updated Oscar charts for Picture, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Visuals

Christmas today and Christmas back then...(at the movies)

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.

This picture has nothing to do with the post but it's Nicole Kidman three Christmases ago. Cheers!

Years ago it was decided that we couldn't be celebrating movie anniversaries with utter randomness at the Film Experience so we committed to 10th, 25th, 50th, and 75th, and 100th parties. We stray often, especially if we're busy on "projects" like a Smackdown or what not, so this decision was useless and we'll probably drop it next year. Broader movie culture wouldn't play along anyway, celebrating all sorts of odd anniveraries (17th! 36th!) in order to just keep celebrating the same things over and over again. This is all a long way of getting around to the conceit of this post (GET ON WITH IT) which is

Thank you for reading us all year round and for loving the movies and actresses and the Oscars alongside us. And a super duper thanks and a wish for as much abundance as you can receive to those who subscribe and pay for a cup of coffee for us each month since it's hard times this year at The Film Experience HQ.
