26th Annual SAG Awards

by Nathaniel R

It's SAG night. Let's jump right in...

Christina Applegate got here SAG card in the 70s on an indie film. She doesn't remember what it was (yeah, right) but everyone was "really really high". Cynthia Erivo played a shepherd -- "Everyone lauded my performance." she was hooked at five years old. Eugene Levy dreamed of being the next Mr Whipple but goes on and on in a funny bit. They are actors! (We always love that corny intro.)

Levy and (hot/gay) Son present Male Actor, Comedy Series for which, inexplicably, neither of them is nominatd. The statue goes to awards magnet Tony Shalhoub in Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Critics Choice Awards co-sign the Globe winners

by Nathaniel R

Anne Hathaway presents Joaquin Phoenix with Best Actor

We didn't have a budget for a quick trip to Los Angeles this weekend for the Critics Choice Awards but if you watched from home, what did you think? As per usual the movie awards went to the status quo with all but one of the directly parallel categories going to the recent Globe winners. The only difference was Dolemite is My Name winning Best Comedy but the Globe winner, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wasn't nominated in that category since the CCMAs strangely don't make a distinction between drama and comedy... but then also have a comedy category. It's all very confusing. Most of the other prizes, most of which they give out off-air, went to expected Oscar frontrunners. The strangest outcome, though, was surely a tie in Best Director (Parasite/1917) with neither of those films taking Best Picture (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)...

As per usual we've fallen a bit behind in the awardage department so we're doing a massive post right now to catch up. Here are the latest critics groups to announce their awards as well as nominations from two civil rights organizations, GLAAD and the NAACP...

Toys, battle angels and photoreal lions dominate the VES Awards

by Nathaniel R

Alita Battle Angel, The Lion King and Toy Story 4 led the pack at the annual Visual Effects Society nominations though Toy Story 4 is not one of the finalists for the Visual Effects Oscar. (Inexplicably the Oscar finals had to make room for Cats which received zero nominations from the VES.) Sadly the VES completely ignored Ad Astra which was an unfortunate miss for the Oscar finalist list and suffers a further indignity here. What's a beautiful well reviewed sci-fi drama gotta do to get some respect?

The nominations and a few comments are after the jump...

DGA (semi) surprises with a Taika Waititi nomination

by Nathaniel R

Taika is a previous Oscar nominee for Live Action Short. He could become an Oscar nominee in additional categories this year (Best Director and Best Screenplay)

Making a clean sweep of the major guild nominations, Jojo Rabbit is also in with the Directors Guild of America. This was not totally expected but neither is it much of a surprise since his "anti-hate satire"has performed well all season with awards bodies, despite very vocal detractors and a modest box office performance. Yes, it grossed just a little less than Parasite but since it has Hollywood stars and is in English it wasn't half the breakout word-of-mouth smash that the former was. Where the DGA is always more interesting is in their less Oscar-buzzed "first time feature" category. The nominees are after the jump...
