Emmy Review: Supporting Actress in a Comedy

by Nathaniel R

I chose to cover this category because I hadn't seen ANY of the submitted episodes. I'm never up to date on TV so figured it would be a fun way to sample while also facing the fact that I'll never catch up given that there's always more new stuff to watch so I'm just jumping ahead to 2020 and moving on. I will say that ranking these choices through episode submissions alone was a much different experience than I was expecting in terms of personal favourites versus rank. All eight nominees considered at the jump...

Emmy Review: Guest Actress in a Comedy

By Juan Carlos Ojano

More complicated than it seems, this race features acting veterans, comedic geniuses, and double the Maya Rudolph. Saturday Night Live has been dominant in this category since 2009 (the first year they were allowed to compete with the "Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program" category discontinued). So dominant, in fact, that they've only missed a nomination one year (2015) and in most of those 11 years they've had multiple nominations. SNL has won nearly 50% of the time since it began competing here. Meanwhile, Maya Rudolph makes history as the  first actress to be nominated in this category twice in the same year. Does that support her cause or result in a vote split?

Let’s consider each nominee…

Emmy Category Review: Guest Actor in a Comedy

By Juan Carlos Ojano

Three men from Saturday Night Live, a “regular” guest actor in a Comedy Series frontrunner, a lead in an anthology series episode, and a comedy veteran receiving a posthumous nomination. These are the men nominated in this category. SNL has had at least two nominees in this category since 2013, peaking last year with four of the seven slots. Their last winner was in 2017. Meanwhile, performances from Comedy Series have bagged the last two wins.

Let’s consider each nominee...

Emmy Reactions Survey Pt 1: Fav Nominations, Snubs, and the Problematic "Guest" Categories

HBO's Watchmen and Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs Maisel led the Emmy nominations with 26 and 20 nominations respectively though it was Netflix that had the biggest morning, breaking the record for most nominations (previously held by HBO) with 160 (!!!). As is our habit we polled Team Experience on their reactions. Here's what they had to say about the following three questions which we hope you'll answer, too, in the comments.

  • What was your favourite surprise this morning?

  • What omission perplexes or enrages you?

  • How would you fix the guest categories which are now just like the other categories repeating the same performers each year (series regulars with small parts instead of true "guests")?

Linkwalker

/Film Rise of Skywalker will debut on Disney+ on Star Wars Day, May 4th
The Verge Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) to create a female-centric Star Wars series for Disney+. There's certainly lots of room for creators there since the Star Was universe has been so largely bereft of women.
Collider boils the entire James Bond franchise down to 7 movies Hmmm.

Laura Benanti's generosity, a  Love Victor clip, SNL goodies, and online film festivals after the jump...
