10 years, 10 unforgettable Oscar moments

by Cláudio Alves

We may quibble and despair over the Oscars but we still tune in every year and love them despite it all. If we didn't, why would we obsess over predictions, rejoice at worthy victors or grimace when injustices occur? Looking back at the last decade of the awards, there are many indelible moments that energized us and made us applaud, that had us at the edge of our seats, crying through a heady mix of surprise and mirth.

Honorable mentions and a top ten list after the jump...

Spike Lee chosen as Jury President for Cannes 2020

by Murtada Elfadl

We were just talking about Cannes’ impact on this year’s Oscars and they went and announced Oscar winner and bonafide cinema legend Spike Lee as the head of the jury for next year’s festival. Lee’s Blackkklansman started its Oscar winning journey at the 2018 festival, and that jury headed by Cate Blanchett awarded it the Grand Prix or 2nd place.

Lee has had a long relationship with Cannes since the 1980s...

Spike Lee gets the "Chaplin"

by Nathaniel R

The honors aren’t over for Spike Lee who has spent the last two awards season in high demand walking red carpets and giving speeches as an Honorary Oscar winner and then a competitive winner for the screenplay of BlacKkKlansman. Next up the Chaplin Award at Film at Lincoln Center on April 27th, 2020 . They first handed out this award in 1972 to, you guessed it, Charlie Chaplin… though it obviously wasn’t called the Chaplin Award that first year — what was it called? The official website doesn’t say!

Though the Chaplin Award has mostly gone to movie stars since, or directors who also happened to be famous movie stars (like Chaplin himself), a fair number of behind the camera legends have also been recognized… especially in the first ten years of the award.

We’ve highlighted the directors in the list of previous recipients after the jump...

Podcast: Final Oscar Predictions

with Nathaniel R and Murtada Elfadl and special reccuring guest Nick Davis

With the Oscar on Sunday night, you'd better hurry and listen to this 65 minute podcast as it will self destruct in less than 72 hours. We kid, we kid. You'll still be able to make fun of our faulty crystal balls since we spend one hour making bold and not-so bold predictions as to who will win in 21 Oscar categories (minus the shorts). Hear us panic about how many Oscars Bohemian Rhapsody might win, and whether First Man might surprise with multiple wins, and will Roma really take the most statues?

You can listen to the podcast here at the bottom of the post or download from iTunesContinue the conversations in the comments, won't you?
