Today marks the 10th anniversary of District 9 (2009), a major sleeper hit and Oscar success in its year. Remember that year when it seemed like anything was possible for the sudden extra Best Picture slots ... before the awards strategists and specialty distributors conquered the new system to make it more like the old system again in terms of what got a Best Picture nod. 

District 9 was totally snubbed in Best Makeup which was insane. What does the makeup branch have against body horror anyway? Which brings us to today's lunchtime poll. Valerian in the shadow of The Fifth Element

Luc Besson's comic adaptation Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a mess. But so was his magnum opus The Fifth Element, and that Bruce Willis-starrer went on to become something of a modern-day sci-fi classic. Only time will tell if Valerian will go on to a similarly charmed afterlife, but for my money it suffers under the weight of expectations.

Celebrating "The Fifth Element"

Occasionally I receive a text message from my mother that The Fifth Element is on television. Why she feels the need to tell me, I'm never quite sure. Possibly because my adoration for the film is palpable, or because she like many critics at the time believes that it "may or may not be the worst movie ever made." But The Fifth Element does not need to be defended. It can only be celebreated. As Valerian launches from the imagination of Luc Besson into cinemas everywhere, now is the perfect time to celebrate France's greatest foray into a very American genre: the intergalactic sci-fi action movie.

Today's 4: The Golden Girls, Vertigo, etc...

Our new tradition. We select four or five showbiz anniversaries and give you homework to go with them. It's our way too elaborate affirmation exercize because who doesn't need to keep their spirits up these days!?

Today's Four Anniversaries (May 9th) as Mood Boosters

2005/1987 The Zeéeee marries Kenny Chesney. Just four months later she seeks an anullment for "fraud" but then asks people not to theorize about what "fraud" means. Understandably no one obeys her and rumors explode. On this same day 18 years earlier, another much-gossiped about marriage that ends in weird bitchy rumors: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers! 

In honor of these odd affairs: have a self-deprecating laugh at a big relationship failure rather than being sad about it. We all stumble in love! 

1992 Happy 25th anniversary to the finale of The Golden Girls after a super successful 7 year / 11 Emmys-winning run (one of the rare shows that managed to give one Emmy to each principle, like the entire industry pow-wowed as to who to vote for each time) These girls... Angels, all of them!

Bad Blood: How many film references did you catch?

Manuel, PhD here (it's official as of yesterday people!) and while I should bring you some high brow news to commemorate the occasion - maybe about Cannes or the feminist box office weekend we had - I want to chat about Taylor Swift's Bad Blood video instead. I mean, the credits read "A Joseph Kahn film" so we should obviously pencil it in for Best Animated Live Action Short Film, yes? After plenty of Sin City-style posters, we finally got to see the full video last night at the Billboard Music Awards (which also featured a bunch of dancing Umas!):

It's a smorgasbord of filmic references: Tron bikes! Hunger Games-ey costumes! Leeloo-lookalikes! Academy Award nominee Hailee Stanfield! Minority Report-esque art direction! Sucker Punch-ean lineup! Mad Max: Fury Road color palette finish! Aeon Flux and Ultraviolet echoes! 

I'm sure I missed plenty, but I'm also curious to see if I was the only one who kept thinking of that amazing Battlestar Galactica episode ("Unfinished Business") during those boxing scenes? And more importantly, do you agree that bandaids don't fix bullet holes?
