Oscar Volleys: What do voters want in Best Makeup and Hairstyling?

Continuing our Oscar Volley series at The Film Experience. This morning Glenn Dunks and Ben Miller on Makeup and Hair.

Ben Miller: Alright Glenn, let's get into one of the more fun craft categories, Best Makeup and Hairstyling. This category has sometimes gravitated towards being the MOST makeup, as opposed to the best.  Some presumed frontrunners include Dune, Cruella, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Do you have a personal preference and what do you look for in a potential nominee?

Glenn Dunks: I really like the make up and hairstyling category in theory. They are one of the most individual branches, often choosing lousy movies or those otherwise outside of the Oscar conversation strictly because they appreciate the technical work on display. I have to respect that...

Interview: Nadia Stacey, Cruella's Hair and Makeup Designer

by Nathaniel R

Nadia Stacey talks "Cruella"

When I sat down with Cruella's Hair and Makeup designer Nadia Stacey over Zoom we just had a few minutes to talk. To break the ice quickly, a true story. When I first saw the image of Emma Stone as Cruella, my mind immediately lept to Olivia Colman as Queen Anne in The Favourite and her disgruntled "I look like a badger" quip. I had no idea why. Only when prepping for our Cruella interview did I realize the films had the same makeup designer. Stacey laughs, fondly remembering her BAFTA-winning film. "I feel like there’s a theme going on with me doing mask-kind of faces!"

And with The Favourite (a beloved favourite) duly cited, we jump right in to our conversation about her impressive filmography and her biggest assignment yet, designing Disney's live-action Cruella. [This interview is edited/condensed for clarity]

NATHANIEL: You've done a few movies with Olivia Colman and two with Emma Stone. Are you just going to keep The Favourite-ing from now on?

Nicole Kidman as "Lucille Ball" and "Masha"

My fellow Kidmaniacs, we have so much to look forward to! By now you've probably seen this photo of Nicole Kidman on the set of Aaron Sorkin's next project, Being the Ricardos a week in the life of the stars of seminal sitcom "I Love Lucy". An earlier image of a much more orange wig is also floating around. People seemed to take offense at the very orange wig as if they had never actually looked at old photos of Lucille Ball. That hair was a COLOR... and a mood. No, a way of life. (This wig above is more subdued.)

This week we also got the trailer to Nicole's next miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers  while playing some kind of shady self-help figure / cult leader? Neither have release dates yet but the miniseries is "soon". We suspect the other is a likely December release in theaters (or 2022 if Amazon is feeling confident about their next Oscar slate as is.)
