Interview: Michael Shannon on his new Hulu series “Nine Perfect Strangers”

By Abe Friedtanzer

Michael Shannon's onscreen career deserves more recognition. Yes, he is a two-time Oscar nominee thanks to Revolutionary Road and Nocturnal Animals, but he wasn’t even nominated for his best roles, including Take Shelter, 99 Homes, The Shape of Water, and The Iceman. He also deserved Emmy recognition for his first regular TV role on Boardwalk Empire, which he strangely didn’t get.

Now, the talented always busy actor of stage and screen, who at one point debuted a whopping ten films in a single year (2016), is returning to television for the limited series Nine Perfect Strangers, based on the book by Liane Moriarty, author of Big Little Lies...

Nicole Kidman as "Lucille Ball" and "Masha"

My fellow Kidmaniacs, we have so much to look forward to! By now you've probably seen this photo of Nicole Kidman on the set of Aaron Sorkin's next project, Being the Ricardos a week in the life of the stars of seminal sitcom "I Love Lucy". An earlier image of a much more orange wig is also floating around. People seemed to take offense at the very orange wig as if they had never actually looked at old photos of Lucille Ball. That hair was a COLOR... and a mood. No, a way of life. (This wig above is more subdued.)

This week we also got the trailer to Nicole's next miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers  while playing some kind of shady self-help figure / cult leader? Neither have release dates yet but the miniseries is "soon". We suspect the other is a likely December release in theaters (or 2022 if Amazon is feeling confident about their next Oscar slate as is.)

Nicole Kidman is One Perfect Stranger

By Spencer Coile

It seems as though the success of Big Little Lies was only the start for the team of Nicole Kidman, producer Bruna Papandrea, and author Liane Moriarty. Kidman's Blossom Films and Papandrea's Made Up Stories have closed a preemptive deal for the rights to Moriarty's latest novel, Nine Perfect Strangers. Kidman will star and executive produce, while Papandrea and Moriarty will also serve as executive producers. And what's most astonishing: the book won't even be out until November 9.

It's too soon to tell whether it will be a film or TV adaptation, but what we can glean from the novel is that it follows nine strangers who meet at a remote health resort -- some are there to lose weight, others to reboot their lives. What they learn is that attaining their goals is far more difficult than they initially thought.

Although Nine Perfect Strangers is not technically complete yet, Kidman and Papandrea said:

Simply put, Liane Moriarty is a force of nature, not just as a virtuosic author, but as a collaborator and friend. We’re beyond thrilled to be making Nine Perfect Strangers with this extraordinary woman.

And after Big Little Lies, how can we disagree?
