Today's Watch: "The Counselor"

We don't do "yes no maybe so"s for teasers (and I realize we're behind on a couple juicy trailers) but here's the new tease going around for a legal drama (? & zzz) with an all star cast (drool) directed by the still unOscared Ridley Scott (yay... sort of). Do you think this'll win Oscar traction this year or just drama for the multiplexes? What'cha think?

A delicious collection of actors at least, right? So let's do an impromptu poll!

Very intrigued by Cameron Diaz' performance. I kinda want her to be Oscar nominated.
I hope the film is at least fun.

Cameron Diaz - but only because the poll didn't include Rosie Perez!
Honestly, though, what a great cast in this one.

I believe "Blue Jasmine" is a full trailer. Very juicy trailer too, I might add :)

Just based on the Trailer Fassbender. But based on the script Diaz. Fassbender is just a passive lead.

omg Rosie Perez is in this???

What happened to her!!! LOVE Her

To see Cameron Diaz as an Oscar nominee would be an actressexual dream of mine. I'm totally digging her in this teaser.

Picked Michael just because he is beautiful, but Cameron looks awesome in this teaser! She needs a good film, because I heard Gambit was dreadful.

Brad's hair is highly improvable too.

Maternity has clearly affected Pe's accent. If this goes on with her second child we're all gonna need subtitles.

Cameron Diaz! I loved when she played crazy in Vanilla Sky... she's criminally underrated with the Academy.

June 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBia

The role is right up oscars ally.

June 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermark

This really looks like it'll be an Oscar-contender, which I'd appreciate as hard dramas haven't been too popular the last few years with the Academy (and no Argo doesn't count). The early consensus seems to state that Diaz's character has the most interesting arc, however I'm really looking forward to seeing Fassbender again as it's been (relatively) too long.

David: Umm...I don't buy this "seeming like Traffic". Unless you actually mean that this movie has headache inducing scenes with a pointless dark blue filter that randomly intercut the movie and just cause portions of the audience to nearly fall over in the searing pain.

Are we going to get another podcast soon since we are half way through the year and we should hear what you guys have thought about the first half of movie year. Diaz has the best role and some great scenes which is why I'm so excited for her.

June 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEoin Daly

I really don't get the general enthusiasm. It looks like the cliché after cliché type of movie, if you ask me.

PS Wait to go Supreme Court!

If I knew nothing about the story/script, then Pitt/Fassbender. But Diaz has an insane part & Bardem has one of the weirdest monologues ever. Fassy & Cruz will be the eye candy. Deliciously sexy eye candy.

Wow, I'm actually really surprised that Cameron Diaz (my vote) is in the lead! I love everyone in the cast but she's the most underrated by far.

June 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

Cameron Diaz, without question. I feel like this is the Cameron Diaz performance we've all been impatiently waiting for for the past decade or so. Interested in Fassy, Brad, and Crazy Hair Javier, and I'm also somewhat intrigued by how much we haven't heard about Penelope in this film and what that might augur for the final results, but I really have my fingers-crossed that this is the role that gets people (seriously) talking about Diaz's acting prospects (again). She's by far the lead with the most to prove, and I'd love to see her knock it out of the park in a way that she admittedly hasn't done since Being John Malkovich, give or take that blink-and-you-miss-it moment of erotic excitability in Vanilla Sky.

Man, Diaz looks old...she has looked old since 2006. It's all that sun, it has dried out her once beautiful features. Did you see Gambit? She looks like Frances McDormand in that movie. Can't believe Ridley Scott chose her. There are a million actresses who are better and, if I'm allowed to be superficial for one second more, who LOOKS better that Diaz. Is the character a woman past her prime? If so, she's perfect.

As for the teaser, it can only be a step up from Prometheus.

Three random thoughts came to mind reading this article and watching the teaser:

(1) Though Ridley Scott never won Best Director, his movie Gladiator won Best Picture, in a year which his movie was not even the best (just the most in everything, from costume to score, you know how epic can be). That's better than a lot of other directors who are yet to be recognized.

(2) Cameron Diaz, we don't see enough of her in this teaser. I love her so much, being one of my most favorite actresses. Most of others whom I like have mostly won or at least nominated (Winslet, Witherspoon, Jolie, Cruz & Theron all won, even Kate Hudson nearly won too). When will she break through with her first Oscar nomination? Give her one already. And while we're at it, her Charlie's Angels mate Drew Barrymore too.

(3) The last scene where Penelope Cruz said "have you been bad" immediately reminds me of her hubby's "mommy was very bad" in Skyfall. That's one gorgeously bad family.

Ulrich--ouch. We all get old, some more naturally than others. Now in this teaser, Pitt looks old, really old, 'course nobody ever comments when a man ages...

June 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPam

I loved Penelope. I had understood Penélope had a very brief part, however it seems not so short and really dramatic. She has been nominated so far for roles where she combined drama and comedían skills. I am really enthusiastic on watching her in this different genre.

Fassbender and Pitt are due actors so I understand both are the actors with more chances to be nominated. Bardem is one of the best alive actors but he should try to choose a different type of roles (with a normal haircut). He won't be nominated because of this.

I don't like Cameron Diaz, I don't trust her as a serious contender. She should have been nominated for a couple of early movies but she has failed too much in the last decade.

June 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJJ79

I really hope Cameron Diaz gets nominated. I'm not even a fan, but I feel bad for her simply because that must have sucked to have been sixth place in Oscar voting twice. To be so close (SAG and GG nods twice, once even with Bafta too) twice and miss out??? Damn. And I recently watched Being John Malkovich for the first time and she was great. So I'm rooting for her.

So I'm excited for her and Penelope most of all. "Hab joo bean bad?"
