Globe Predictions? Let's Go Out on a Few Limbs...

This Monday morning very bright and early Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick will announce the 74th annual Golden Globe Predictions. Though the media likes to take easy shots at the Globes each year, if you look through their history of awardage their ratios of great decisions to bad ones is about the same as any organizations. What's more they definitely afford themselves the opportunity to be more daring than Oscar does with their doubled categories. The Comedy/Musical categories are sometimes wasted on star-f***ing it's true (The Tourist anyone?) but more often than not it allows for "lighter" fare which, let's face it, can age better than biopics or message movies to have its day in the sun.

Don Cheadle (Miles Ahead), Laura Dern (The Founder), and Anna Kendrick (Mike & Dave...) will announce. Only Cheadle might show up as a nominee...

What might be nominated this year? We've never claimed to be good at predicting the Globes but let's all ponder the possibilities together after the jump...

DRAMA PREDICTIONS
LION
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
MOONLIGHT
after that it's much trickier... and since we can't decide and they sometimes have ties let's get six nominees this year with these ones squeezing in...
FENCES
HACKSAW RIDGE
HIDDEN FIGURES

but there are so many possibilities...
ARRIVAL (though they don't always respond to sci-fi)
HELL OR HIGH WATER
SULLY
SILENCE
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (this would be just like them but eeewwww)
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC

DRAMA ACTRESS PREDICTIONS
Amy Adams, Arrival
Taraji P Henson, Hidden Figures
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Natalie Portman, Jackie
and we're going to go out on a limb and say a fun shock of promoting a supporting campaign
Viola Davis, Fences

possible spoilers
Emily Blunt, Girl on the Train (the Globes are obsessed with her)
Ruth Negga, Loving
Jessica Chastain, Miss Sloane

DRAMA ACTOR PREDICTIONS
Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Tom Hanks, Sully
Denzel Washington, Fences
and we're crossing all our fingers and toes for...
Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic

possible spoillers...
Joel Edgerton, Loving
Michael Keaton, The Founder
Brad Pitt, Allied (it's the Globes!)
Chris Pine, Hell or High Water

COMEDY/MUSICAL PREDICTIONS
LA LA LAND
FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS
20TH CENTURY WOMEN
after that it's much trickier but let's say...
HAIL CAESAR
RULES DON'T APPLY (I know. I know. But this would be very much like the Globes)

could surprise...
THE LOBSTER
EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!
SING STREET
DEADPOOL
LOVE & FRIENDSHIP (should have been a lock but people are alarmingly focused on December movies this year. It happens in some calendar years)

can we just weep that they don't include animated features here anymore because...
MOANA and ZOOTOPIA would have made wonderful nominees here.

COMEDY/MUSICAL ACTRESS PREDICTIONS
Annette Bening, 20th Century Women
Emma Stone, La La Land
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins
after that it's more difficult to say. Maybe...
Kate Beckinsale, Love & Friendship
Sally Field, Hello My Name is Doris

possible spoilers
Hailee Steinfeld, Edge of Seventeen
Susan Sarandon, The Meddler
Renée Zellweger, Bridget Jones's Baby (they do love the Zeéeeee)

COMEDY MUSICAL ACTOR PREDICTIONS
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins
after that it's trickier but let's guess...
Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool
Colin Farrell, The Lobster
I'm going to go wayyy out on a limb for fun and say...
Don Cheadle, Miles Ahead

possible spoilers
Ryan Gosling and/or Russell Crowe, The Nice Guys
George Clooney, Hail Caesar

our worthy longshot fantasy
Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Sing Street

FOREIGN FILM PREDICTIONS
Elle
Julieta (the Globes are much bigger fans of Almodóvar than the Oscars)
Toni Erdmann
competitive year but let's guess two films that aren't in foreign film Oscar play...
Aquarius
The Handmaiden

possible spoilers ...
Land of Mine
Neruda
The Salesman
Apprentice
Under the Shadow

P.S. WHAT IF THE GLOBES DIVVIED UP SUPPORTING, TOO?
Why should lead actors have all the Drama OR Comedy fun. They really should have two more acting categories if they're going to have such bifurcated pleasures. After all there are far more performances by supporting players each year than by leads. If the Globes did that wouldn't it be fun to see lists like so...?

NO MORE PREDICTIONS BUT FOR YOURS IN THE COMMENTS!

Nat: Didn't Captain Fantastic get the Comedy placement at Critics Choice?

Based on the CCA's?

Lead Actor Comedy/Musical:

Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Ryan Gosling, The Nice Guys
Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins
Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool

Lead Actress Comedy/Musical:

Kate Beckinsale, Love & Friendship
Sally Field, Hello, My Name is Doris
Kate McKinnon, Ghostbusters (Yes, it's slightly Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal, but...yeah)
Emma Stone, La La Land
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins

Lead Actor Drama:

Mostly your field, but with Pitt or Pine filling the position left by Viggo

Lead Actress Drama:

The CCA Lead Actress field - Emma Stone.

I predict Anna Kendrick will look super-awake and perky at that early hour, and that Laura Dern will be described as "bold" and "fearless" just for standing next to her.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBrevity

I predict that they will come up with the best nominees of the season (of course they seem like the only group capable of thinking outside the box enough to nominate Ralph Fiennes in Supporting Actor). Despite this, a select group of awards pundits will still spend tomorrow making dated Pia Zadora jokes at their expense.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I think The Lobster is going to surprise. I have it for Picture (C/M), Actor, Supporting Actress (Weisz), and Screenplay.

Has HFPA declared Viola a leading actress for Fences? They made that call for Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara before the nominations were announced last year.

There are so many possibilities for Best Pixture Drama. If this were 2010, I could even see Allied making it in despite its middling reviews. But the Globes have been much more discerning in the past few years (remember Greta Gerwig's nom for Frances Ha? Even the freaking Spirit Awards snubbed her) since The Tourist embarrassment, so I have Arrival/Jackie/Manchester/Moonlight/Silence. If six nominees, Lion will squeeze in. You know Harvey will find a way.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Pretty sure Davis was accepted in supporting by the HFPA.

Erik -- whatever. i like to have fun with these things.

Volvagia -- Critics Choice is so fucked up that they don't even categorize things so it's just whatever you want. and there are also no "drama" categories making the "comedy" and other categories especially suspicious i.e. meaning regular "best film" just means "best drama" which sucks. so no, Captain Fantastic is not a comedy. It's not a comedy at all. I can't even fathom that nomination unless people didn't actually see the movie but were like "i heard Viggo was good in that movie where he wears the funny red suit"

Aaron -- i would be so happy if the Lobster did well.

Brevity -- accurate predictions!

I understand Michael Keaton is up for Best Comedy/Musical Actor. And yes, as far as I'm concerned Viggo Mortensen is up for Best Drama Actor.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul

Keaton is officially competing in Drama.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterErik Anderson

Nathaniel - do you find this an especially difficult year to predict the Globes in some categories? I am having a crazy hard time with Motion Picture Drama. There are so many possible scenarios that could happen this year, more than normal.

At the moment I have: Fences, Hell or High Water, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. But Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, Loving, Silence or Sully could easily crash that.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterErik Anderson

I totally agree that Captain Fantastic is a drama... but I expect them to nominate him in the comedy category on account of the colorfulness of the movie... the should call it best performance by an actor in a comedy or musical or quirky drama? lol

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

Sally Field getting nominated would be a God ordianed miracle, I think they would probably go with Hailee Stienfeld or perhaps Zellweger, since they've been more than welcoming to her and the threequel did get really good reviews and was a huge foreign success and that would make her 3 for 3.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRizz

I would be shocked by any "Deadpool" nominations, but it would be worth it just for all the confusion that would cause at Marvel. (Like, of all the superhero movies in recent years, this is the one that could break through with awards?)

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDave S.

Tangentially related: Has anyone read Anna Kendrick's new book? It is a lot of fun.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdaisy

The Globes aren't fans of Viola Davis despite nominating her multiple times. It's only natural for them to deny her the category upgrade.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Rizz -- they aren't actually kind to actresses in high school comedies though (which is why i dont think Steinfeld is happening) -- the place they llike the young starlets is on TV dramas.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Although I's certain it won't happen, I'd like to see Chris Pine grab a nod. I'd put him ahead of Garfield.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterReady

I still am looking for Ben Foster in supporting. And Jesse Eisenberg in comedy for 'Café Society."

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

Is there any precedent for an actor to go leading at the Globes and supporting at the Oscars the way Hugh Grant is being pushed? It's a worthy performance that should be recognized by the Academy but I fear category confusion leaving him out of the top five in both categories at the Oscars.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterReady

@Ready - Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago, Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies, Maggie Smith in California Suite. I'm sure this has happened to a male in Comedy before but who knows. This isn't that big of a tactic in the Drama categories.

A wise Polonius said "brevity is the soul of wit" - and your comment is a testament to that, Brevity! HAHAHA! ❤️

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan Crowe

I bet something stupid will get nominated. 'Member the time The Tourist got a bunch of nominations and it was poorly received? Oh, how about that time Madonna won a Golden Globe for a shitty song for a movie she made that was just fucking shit?

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

I've long wished that the Golden Globes would double their supporting for the exact reasons Nathaniel stated. It was the one aspect that I liked about the Golden Satellite awards.
Last year's dream ballot: Supporting Actress - Comedy/Musical would be: Rose Byrne "Spy" (WINNER), Lillette Dubey "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", Mamie Gummer "Ricki and the Flash", Miranda Hart "Spy", and Tilda Swinton "Trainwreck."
Supporting Actress - Drama: Joan Allen "Room", Amber Heard "The Danish Girl", Rachel McAdams "Spotlight" (WINNER), Sarah Paulson "Carol", and Yolandi Visser "Chappie." I can't get down with the category fraud placements of JJL, Mara, and Vikander.
Supporting Actor - Comedy/Musical: Richard Kind "Inside Out" (WINNER), Kevin Kline "Ricki and the Flash", Jude Law "Spy", Michael Peña "Ant-Man", and Michael Shannon "The Night Before."
Supporting Actor - Drama: Kyle Chandler "Carol", Emory Cohen "Brooklyn" (WINNER), Paul Giamatti "Straight Outta Compton", Sean Harris "Macbeth", and Liev Schreiber "Spotlight." Personally, Mark Ruffalo felt like more of a lead character in "Spotlight" so he's on my personal Lead Actor ballot.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterWayne B.

Nathaniel- That's true, I guess the teen comedy would be to be a pretty big box office success ala Easy A but I guess Edge of Seventeen stumbled there.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRizz

God. I hope Susan Sarandon in The Meddler is nominated over Sally Field.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRoger

I hope Rebecca Hall get sum luv. My predictions:

Actress, drama
Portman, Adams, Huppert, Negga n Hall

Actor, drama
Affleck, Garfield, Washington, Hanks n Edgerton

Actress, comedy or musical
Stone, Bening, Streep, Beckingsale n Steinfeld

Actor, com or music
Gosling, Farrell, Grant, Mortensen n Cheadle

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

I think Sing Street will make its way into Comedy-Musical, and in my dreams, Walsh-Peelo gets in too. Tom Bennett in Love & Friendship, Alden Ehrenrich in Hail Caesar, and Ralph Fiennes in A Bigger Splash are the most deserving male supporting performances of the year, and I am already preparing myself to calm the outrage their constant snubbing will provoke inside me.

PLEASE someone tell me if there is any conceivable way Viola could be seen as Supporting in Fences. From what I remember of the stage version it was borderline, but definitely more on the co-lead side than the Supporting side. And yet critic's groups keep bending to the damn campaign! WHY don't they listen to their own hearts and minds and put her where she belongs?!?

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDancin' Dan

Dave S: 1. Globe Comedy nods aren't big, though, and 2. Marvel doesn't really make full comedies. They're funnier than the Distinguished Competition's movies, sure, but that's not hard and doesn't really make them comedies.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

I don't have predictions for the movie categories, more wants for the TV categories lol.

I want The Crown nominated, especially John Lithgow. I want OITNB to be recognized for what was a truly devastating (in a good way) fourth season. I want Paulson to win for the OJ mini-series. And there are probably other wants I want too. But I can't remember then right now.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

My predictions.

Rizz - yeah, except Bring it On and Mean Girls were huge hits and didn't garner Kiki or LiLo nods. Idk how Clueless did at the box office, but she wasn't nominated either. So Emma Stone was really lucky to get that nom lol.
