Oscar Chart Updates: Visuals, Sound, Animation & Documentary
Mos of the Oscar charts are now updated but for foreign film and the acting categories. We'll get to them soon enough but otherwise we've finished the July shifts.
Things to wonder about right at this moment... (discuss in the comments, plz)
• If The Legend of Tarzan can make any headway towards a Costume Design consideration for Ruth Myers since there's so few "showy" period or fantasy costume films this year outside of the many competing works of Colleen Atwood?
• When we will get our first look at images or footage from the WW II drama Allied (with Brad Pitt) or the sci-fi drama Arrival (with Amy Adams)?
• If Florence Foster Jenkins has any strength in it beyond Meryl? (Costumes? Hair and Makeup? Score?)
• If Marvel Studios will finally break through in tech categories (like Batman films sometimes do) or if they'll continue to snag just one or MAX two nominations for their most popular films like Civil War?
• If Fences, The Founder, and Loving, which all take place across roughly the same time period will be too "muted" in terms of visuals to snag craft nominations or if Oscar will love their possibly modest naturalism?
• Why we've heard so little about How to Talk to Girls at Parties release strategy? Is it going to be pushed back?
• Will Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton goodwill get him an Oscar for Moana despite what sounds like strong competition in the song category?
• If Finding Dory's massive box office haul we'll be enough to edge smaller originals out of the animation race even though they're sometimes stingy with sequels?

I mean, it all looks pretty agreeable at this stage when we still haven't seen that many titles that seem destined for Oscar. Could STAR TREK come back for make-up? It did win for the original reboot after all, and some of the characters I've seen in trailers and posters look impressive and very obvious.
There's a few high profile / hit movie songs so far this year:
Heathens - SUICIDE SQUAD (performed by Twenty One Pilots)
Can't Stop The Feeling! - TROLLS (Justin Timberlake)
Sledgehammer - STAR TREK BEYOND (Rihanna)
Just Like Fire - EYESORE IN WONDERLAND 2 (Pink)
The Academy nominated The Weeknd this year so you never know.
Oh, and I wouldn't underestimate BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK in the Sound categories. There will be war flashbacks and it is Ang Lee after all, so the craft will be impeccable.
I loved the book and cannot wait to see this film.
Fences has a December 16 release date before going wide Christmas Day. Hidden Figures is also receiving a December qualifying run.
Meryl Streep can wear a frock as well as anyone, and she does attract best costume design awards as much as Blanchett, Swinton, Knightley, and Kidman. She looks great in those photos, so
I wouldn't count her out...
But I might have put "Hail Caesar" a little higher for best costume - sailor suits, bathing suits, roman centurions, oh my!
My Original Song predictions match yours 4/5 - I just have 'Cant Stop The Feeling' from Trolls over 'No Dames'
Also, I think you should consider Thomas Newman getting in Original Score for Finding Dory
Oh, a FLORENCE costume nod seems pretty solid right now. More so than Meryl, which... well, I think as fun as she is, it'll be a bit too broad for them when they'll likely have more really solid stuff (so not just Emma Thompson in Saving Mr Banks).
A lot of reviews praised Adam Stone's cinematography in Loving.
And it's Powell in Silence :
"Powell didn't work on Scorsese's forthcoming release, Silence, set in 17th-century Japan, but she's readying herself for the following one, which is still under wraps."
It's not Powell. I tried to post a link but it didn't work. That's the link: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/sandy-powell-oscarwinning-costume-designer-on-working-with-martin-scorsese-20160517-gox0np.html
I do believe O.J:Made in America is Oscar eligible. It also stands to note that the Best Documentary category is one of the most populist categories Oscar has. They very rarely ignore the big ones.
I saw Florence Foster Jenkins a few weeks back, and the costumes, hair and makeup, and production design were all great. Meryl's performance was expectedly strong; her impersonation of the real FFJ was flawless. It's definitely gonna lead to a Globe nom, but Oscar seems unlikely. It is quite broadly comic, and I'm thinking it'll be a tight year for actresses.
steve g -- oh yeah, i can see that. Billy Lynn. and thanks for the song suggestions
It looks like you'll have to update your documentary predictions again, http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/20/movies/ava-duvernay-new-york-film-festival-the-13th.html?_r=0.
