More Critics Prizes: Detroit & San Diego

It's apparently Florence Pugh day with critics though you'll have to read on to know why.

DFCS (Detroit Film Critics Society)
Detroit gave four prizes to Marriage Story but it couldn't crack Picture or Director...

Film Parasite
Director Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
Actress Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
Actor Adam Driver, Marriage Story
Supporting Actress Laura Dern, Marriage Story
Supporting Actor Joe Pesci, The Irishman
Breakthrough Performer Florence Pugh, Little Women / MidSommar / Fighting with My Family
Ensemble Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Screenplay Marriage Story
Use of Music Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Animated Film Toy Story 4
Documentary Apollo 11

SDFCS (San Diego Film Critics Society)

We like the San Diego Film Critics Society because they regularly throw at least one cool curveball. This year that'd be either Zhao Shuzhen for Best Supporting Actress (a category they tend to have good taste in) or Luce for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Film Irishman (runner up: Marriage Story)
Director Safdie Brothers, Uncut Gems (runner up: Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story)
Actress Lupita Nyong'o, Us (runner up: Renee Zellweger, Judy)
Actor TIE Adam Driver, Marriage Story and Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
Supporting Actress Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell (runner up: Laura Dern, Marriage Story)
Supporting Actor TIE Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Joe Pesci, The Irishman
Comedic Performance: Wesley Snipes, Dolemite is My Name (runner up: Taika Waitti, Jojo Rabbit)
Ensemble: Knives Out (runner up: The Irishman)
Breakthrough Artist: Florence Pugh, Little Women/MidSommar (runner up: Kelvin Harrison Jr, Waves)
Original Screenplay: Marriage Story (runner up: Uncut Gems)
Adapted Screenplay: Luce (runner up: The Irishman)
Costume Design: Dolemite is My Name (runner up: Downton Abbey)
Editing: Ford V Ferrari (runner up: Uncut Gems)
Cinematography: The Lighthouse (runner up: 1917)

Production Design: 1917 (runner up: Little Women)
Visual Effects: Ad Astra (runner up: 1917)
Use of Music: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (runner up: Jojo Rabbit)
Animated Film: I Lost My Body (runner up: Toy Story 4)
Documentary: One Child Nation (runner up: Love, Antosha)
Foreign Language Film: Parasite (runner up: Transit)

Florence Pugh missed the Globe nomination this morning but we think that's just because she's not famous enough for the Globes (yet). Two breakthrough performer prizes today so soon after her Critics Choice nomination are  a nice reminder that people really loved her work this year in both MidSommar and as "Amy" in Little Women. The Oscar nomination may or may not happen... we'll see how the next month of media goes... but she's building momentum for a major Hollywood breakthrough whichever way the Oscar winds blow.

Lately with Supporting Actress it goes to an actress who is hot off acclaimed television work or that being their most rewarding medium of work. eg, Arquette, Davis, Janney, King. Now Dern who isn't getting any resistance at all. I guess that's the new trend for supporting actress, like how in the 90's they loved comedy performances.

I still think JLo is winning the Oscar.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

Out of all the frontrunners, I would actually be most fine if Scarlett wins the Oscar. I am not for Renee having two wins and Charlize winning for playing that devil Megyn.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFadhil

Scarlett Johansson winning something.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMeryl Streep

But she’ll never out do me with a second rate Kramer Vs Kramer riff.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMeryl Streep

The fact that Scarlett Johansson is not the absolute frontrunner mystifes me.

What's your theory? Too hot? Too opinionated? I mean, she has played the game with all those awful Marvel movies and yet, I got the feeling that the industry doesn't seem to respect her in the Lawrence/Adams way.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

A Globe and SAG win could turn Scarlett into the front runner if industry folks are as down on Zellweger as Judy/a two time Oscar winner as Nathaniel, his team and a large majority of the commenters here. Are those folks a true measure of the mood and opinion or more on the biased or contrarian side. We shall see Peggy Sue. (I hope your 2020 name is as cute xo)

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterKen

Scarlett’s biggest hurdle is her character’s passivity and passive-aggression. I realize that’s the point, but it may read to some as the actress being unsure of what choices to make instead of Nicole herself. And I personally find the role confusingly written.

I'm with you Peggy Sue - absolutely puzzled here that not everybody is betting on her ! But we should not underestimate the foreign press love for "European style" movies, and in a way Marriage Story feels timeless & very personal - I also believe if she wins Globe she might climb to the top. She has a good chance if they start to resent Zellweger - the love for her performance mystifes me, as I felt I could never forget that she's always Zellweger and never really Judy - very different to for example Taron Egerton / Elton...

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMartin

Peggy, she's the new Kathleen Turner! You should know!

I can't believe Woodard is being shut out so completely for performances which IMO are in nowhere near that same category as hers.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeter

I think if you search your soul Peter you can believe it and know why it's sadly expected about Woodard being shut out.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Some might want to kill me, but I really think Scarlett would make a more deserving Oscar winner for MARRIAGE STORY than Renée for JUDY for her performance alone. I loved MARRIAGE STORY, but she really impressed me with her performance - it has been a while since delivered something as great and special as this one

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEd

/3rtful -- in this case i dont think it's about race (though it sometimes is) because look at the way Erivo is sailing towards a nom. The fact is that Neon doomed Woodard with that horrible release date for a film that was never going to be big beyond Best Actress. In Mark Harris's greart article about all these pundit assumptions, my only qualm was the equation with Bombshell and Little Women's release dates. It's fine to open very late if you are in a movie that will naturally get tons of media attention. And those properties -- multiple big stars, big news stories or IPs will naturall get attention whenever they open but Woodard us in a small sober indie which seems all wrong for the holidays in terms of what people want at the movies.

I still cant figure the reasoning behind it because I believe Woodard is a beloved enough figure to have had traction if the film had been released earlier.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I think Scarlett is overshadowed by Driver, particularly in the back half of the movie. I wish she had one more big scene in Marriage Story.

I believe Bening probably suffered from a similar issue in American Beauty 20 years ago, even though she was much better than Kevin Spacey (actually, all of the actors we are discussing are better than Kevin Spacey).

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjules

Ed - I totally agree... And Zellweger can't become a two times Oscar Winner

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPP

Just as you say Zellweger got a boost of chance to win beacuse of her iconic real life character, so does Erivo get to sneak in for a nomination for a real life character who has had spotlight put on her a lot recently with Underground tv show and a talked about Drunk History episode. Also being a preordained "lock" for nomination before the season started and the film was seen means with just a few award citations lazy pundits and critcs will rubberstamp the easy option.

Neon certainly isn't helping. maybe Woodard needs to talk to Diane Ladd on how to get some extra heat through Hollywood connections.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Wow how could anyone think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has a better ensemble than Parasite and Marriage Story?!

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterOwen

The blame for Woodard's lack of traction lies squarely on Neon, which could've released Clemency (a Sundance premier—almost a year ago!) in the spring or even early fall, à la Judy. A24 had a similarly bone-headed release strategy for 20th Century Women, and we know how that sunk Annette Bening's (and Greta Gerwig's) chances.

It's great to see Nyong'o clean up with (most of) the critics for such an inspired performance, but Zellweger is clearly the critical runner-up so her chances of sailing to victory at the Globes, SAGs, and finally Oscar is undiminished. Johansson, terrific as she is in Marriage Story, certainly has played the game: the Disney/Marvel one, not the Academy one. They're different games, which is the reason Robert Downey, Jr. isn't in the mix for the Avengers: Endgame. (The money, honey, is their reward.)

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

This sort of half a sweep (or more like a third) for Lupita is the most exciting thing happening I think. I hope it's enough to secure an Oscar nom.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDave in Hollywood

I'm hoping that Jennifer Lopez prevails for Hustlers. It's great to see Lupita continue to gain momentum despite losing out at the Globes. The Bombshell reviews are coming in and they aren't the best and Little Women is underperforming at these awards (just missed the Costume Guilds) Hoping that Actress is: Zellweger, Nyong'o, Johansson, Akwafina, Woodard (Neon needs to back this)

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterChunkyDory

I don't see Akwafina having any shot at a nod. She's very good but at times underplays it and it's not as if the movie is all on her shoulders. There's an ensemble in place. I like the film, tho feel it's not as strong as it should be, yet realize it's the kind of film that may need a second viewing. Either way, she's a longshot. I think Emma Thompson is a lot better shot, with a performance that is as good as any.

Will see Harriet this week. It looks awful, and she's not a star, and the reviews aren't great for the film. I think Woodard has a chance, but the push has to come now.

Lupita suddenly flying. I didn't think it was that level of performance tho.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

PP-Many mediocre actress are two times winner my friend ... Sally Field/Hillary Swank just a reminder.....

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterStjeans

PP-Remember many commenters have bad taste eg. Stjeans.

December 10, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterM’Lynn

Pugh is definitely having a year like Jennifer Lawrence did when she was nominated for Silver Linings Playbook. It's not just the one performance; it's they year of excellent work released. She's not making the cut for Midsommar (same as Lawrence for The Hunger Games), but she has a much safer performance that everyone can rally behind in Little Women.
