"Minari" leads the Dorian Award nominees but LGBT films underperform

by Nathaniel R

The Society for LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, to which I and a few of our writers here belong, have revealed their nominations for the film year with Ammonite, Boys in the Band (missing in the first press release - but since corrected), Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, I Carry You With Me, Supernova, and Uncle Frank up for best LGBTQ Film though only one of them (Ma Rainey) secured any other nominations. Minari leads with the overall nominations with six and Nomadland is just behind with five.

You can see all the nominations after the jump...

Minari leads with six nominations

Best Film
FIRST COW
MINARI
NOMADLAND
PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
SOUND OF METAL

Impressive gets for First Cow and Sound of Metal to land in this category since there are only five slots.

Best LGBTQ Film
AMMONITE
BOYS IN THE BAND
I CARRY YOU WITH ME
MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM
SUPERNOVA
UNCLE FRANK

Sometimes there is overlap with Best Film and Best LGBTQ film but not this year.

Best Foreign Language Film
ANOTHER ROUND
BACURAU
I CARRY YOU WITH ME
LA LLORONA
MINARI
TWO OF US

Hmmm (there must have been a tie since there are six nominees). All of these are good movies but given that most awards group has named almost the same exact list you get the distinct feeling that media folk on both sides of the industry here in the US just aren't watching more than say 5 or 6 films per year that aren't in English.

Kelly Reichardt on set

Best Director
CHLOÉ ZHAO, NOMADLAND
EMERALD FENNELL, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
KELLY REICHARDT, FIRST COW
LEE ISAAC CHUNG, MINARI
REGINA KING, ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI

Awards groups have been very appreciative of female directors this year often giving them the majority of the nominations. Will Oscar follow suit? That remains to be seen. (As with the Globes, Regina King made the Best Director list without her film making the Best Film list)

Best Screenplay (original or adapted)
CHLOE ZHAO, NOMADLAND
ELIZA HITTMAN, NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS
EMERALD FENNELL, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
LEE ISAAC CHUNG, MINARI
RADHA BLANK, THE FORTY-YEAR-OLD VERSION

Despite only having one category for Screenplay, Radha Blank made it! Congrats to that scrappy funny film.

Best Unsung Film
DRIVEWAYS
FIRST COW
MISS JUNETEENTH
NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS
SHIRLEY
THE ASSISTANT

I definitely voted for Miss Juneteenth so happy to see it here... though I think we're stretching the definition of "Unsung" a bit to include First Cow and Never Rarely Sometimes Always which have both received high profile honors this year. Of course both were shut out by the Globes and might be shout out at the Oscars so maybe the definition will apply.

Best Documentary
COLLECTIVE
CRIP CAMP
DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD
DISCLOSURE
TIME
WELCOME TO CHECHNYA

Best LGBTQ Documentary
A SECRET LOVE
BORN TO BE
DISCLOSURE: TRANS LIVES ON SCREEN
MUCHO MUCHO AMOR: THE LEGEND OF WALTER MERCADO
WELCOME TO CHECHNYA

Welcome to Chechnya and Disclosure both managed nominations in both doc categories.

Best Film Performance — Actress
CAREY MULLIGAN, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
FRANCES MCDORMAND, NOMADLAND
NICOLE BEHARIE, MISS JUNETEENTH
SIDNEY FLANIGAN, NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS
VIOLA DAVIS, MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM

Wow. Nicole Beharie made it! Since this is a gay critics lists, Michelle Pfeiffer not being here for French Exit (as she's such a gay fav) is probably not a great sign for her chance to surprise with an Oscar nod. Although it could be that not enough of the voting body had seen this movie in time.

Best Film Performance — Actor
ANTHONY HOPKINS, THE FATHER
CHADWICK BOSEMAN, MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM
DELROY LINDO, DA 5 BLOODS
RIZ AHMED, SOUND OF METAL
STEVEN YEUN, MINARI

Wouldn't it be amazing if this was the Oscar lineup?

Best Film Performance — SUPPORTING Actress
AMANDA SEYFRIED, MANK
CANDICE BERGEN, LET THEM ALL TALK
MARIA BAKALOVA, BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM
OLIVIA COLMAN, THE FATHER
YUH-JUNG YOUN, MINARI

Candice Bergen!

Best Film Performance — SUPPORTING Actor
CHADWICK BOSEMAN, DA 5 BLOODS
DANIEL KALUUYA, JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH
LESLIE ODOM JR., ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI
PAUL RACI, SOUND OF METAL
SACHA BARON COHEN, THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7

Would not be surprising at all if this is the Oscar list. In fact, it's exactly what we're currently predicting... though we wish Kaluuya had campaigned truthfully in lead. GALECA ignored Stanley Tucci's category fraud for Supernova and placed him on the longlist for Best Actor instead -- i like to think my protestations helped a wee bit there -- but for some reason they were (collectively) okay with this one.

Most Visually Striking Film
BIRDS OF PREY: AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN
MANK
NOMADLAND
SOUL
WOLFWALKERS

I voted for Wolfwalkers here so nice to see its inclusion. I assumed it was a wasted passion vote.

Campiest Flick
BAD HAIR
BIRDS OF PREY: AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN
EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: THE STORY OF FIRE SAGA
THE PROM
WONDER WOMAN 1984

"We're Wilde About You!" Rising Star Award
ALAN S. KIM
KINGSLEY BEN-ADIR
MARIA BAKALOVA
RADHA BLANK
SIDNEY FLANIGAN

Wilde Artist of the Year Award
(to a truly groundbreaking force in entertainment)
CHADWICK BOSEMAN
CHLOE ZHAO
DOLLY PARTON
ELLIOT PAGE
REGINA KING

That's quite an eclectic grab bag of people there for the final award.

What do you think of the nominations and who would you vote for?

"Impressive gets for First Cow and Sound of Metal to land in this category since there are only five slots."

Why not? Riz Ahmed is such an hottie

It would be a fabulous Best Actor list if Affleck replaced Boseman,Supporting Actor looks fine.

Still no Kate Winslet.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

(As with the Globes, Regina King made the Best Director list without her film making the Best Film list)

She shouldn't be in neither.

Since this is a gay critics lists, Michelle Pfeiffer not being here for French Exit (as she's such a gay fav) is probably not a great sign for her chance to surprise with an Oscar nod.

That was never going to happen. Move on.

No Boys in The Band is a bit surprising

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJW

Matthias & Maxime was ineligible?

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPP

The Boys in the Band has been added.

Hopefully this means I Carry You With Me will become more accessible.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBushwick

Love to see "A Secret Love" and "Disclosure" nominated. To my taste, they would be perfectly worthy Oscar nominees as well...

... as long as that total and complete masterpiece that is "Collective" wins the damn thing. I could live with "Dick Johnson is Dead" winning, though.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan Murphy

GASP.... if any awards body were to honor YOU DON'T NOMI in Documentary it would be here. What a shame.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Always the same movies... Always the same movies... 😴😴😴

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSusanita

I would never fuck a Dorian member.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy

Peggy, they probably wouldn’t fuck you either.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBushwick

It's a little concerning how, outside of Bad Hair, the "Campiest Film" category is awful. If any category should be fun and queer it should be that one. And it's just... a list of films that are poorly made with a limited voice.

I get why Dolly is here, with the vaccine and all, but I don't think this was her year for entertainment.

Very happy to see Canice and Disclosure here.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

Not even the gays are voting for Meryl.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

People has become tired of Streep, Jamie. At last! Enough is enough.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterleon

"I voted for Wolfwalkers here so nice to see its inclusion. I assumed it was a wasted passion vote."

Which is crazy because it's certainly the most visually striking film I've seen from the past year (heck the past couple years!) and should easily win here if people actually watched the movies (disclaimer I haven't seen Nomadland).

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

No Kirby, Burstyn or Close?

Go Ahmed, Mulligan (in the absence of Kirby), Cohen and Bakalova (in the absence of Close).

Still wondering why Parsons hasn't gotten any love for Boys.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

I really wish we had an additional LGBTIQ film category for something like independent or streaming only. Stuff like THE PRINCE, TWO OF US, YOUR NAME ENGRAVED HEREIN and many more. They never stand a chance against big distributors and studios who cast straight actors.

As for the voting, we only get three slots for each category, which makes it harder to get any real surprises.

February 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn

Kelly Reichardt looks like an underdressed Wes Anderson.

February 12, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

Glenn -- Critics Choice uses that same 3 nominees per ballot thing. It makes me crazy. I want a solid 5.

February 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

So not every gay man has to be morbidly obsessed with oscarless actresses. Thank God some gay men stand with their impeccable movie taste and totally snub bad/mediocre movies like Hillbilly Elegy and French Exit.

February 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSam

Get a group with collectively great taste and they can work wonders with just three nominees per ballot.
