Cannes "82 Women" protest on behalf of female filmmakers

82 women walked the red carpet today at Cannes protesting the lack of female filmmakers represented at the festival over the years. The number 82 is the number of films directed by women that have been in the main competition lineup since Cannes began 71 years ago (3 of which are this year). All the famous talented women from this year's jury led by Cate Blanchett were there along with the Godmother of the French New Wave,  recent Honorary Oscar recipient AND nominee Agnes Varda. Lily James Kisses "Teacher"

Chris here. While the first looks at the Mamma Mia! sequel has been a swinging pendulum of results, fans sincere and ironic still eagerly await word on just what ABBA songs will make their way into the film. But yay, we just got our first released track: a Lily James-led rendition of "When I Kissed the Teacher". And naturally it's a gay old time: feather boas, costume reveals, and a Celie Imrie cameo. Mostly, this has us really stoked for James' polished vocals and perhaps some higher production value this go around.

Even though this song isn't quite at the top of my must list for this ABBA redux (gimme "People Need Love" in addition to Cher's incoming "Fernando"), it's quite a treat. What ABBA tracks are you hoping make the mix?

For this upcoming Mother’s Day weekend, Jorge takes a look at the depictions of the hardships of motherhood in Diablo Cody and Jason’s Reitman’s latest joint.

At this point it may be an overstatement, but motherhood is not easy. As it turns out, taking care of another, much smaller living and breathing human being requires more time, attention and energy than one sole human being is able to provide. Tully, among many other things, is an examination of the mental toll that motherhood takes on a person.

Review: "The Seagull"

Nina (Saoirse Ronan) is sweetly exasperated by Konstantin (Billy Howle), whose avant-garde play she has just acted (and flopped) in for a small crowd of friends and relations. "Nothing happens in your play," she says. "It's all people talking. You ought to add a love story."

Anton Chekov, who wrote the maybe-you've-heard-of-it 1895 play The Seagull upon which this movie is based, was of course making a joke at his own expense --The Seagull is really nothing but talk and love stories. Half a dozen love stories are all twisted up, a gordian knot of romantic entanglements...
