SAG Nominations – TV

By Abe Friedtanzer

While there are surely more impactful surprises to discuss on the film side of things today, it’s great to see an interesting list of television options honored too. Once again, however, so few series are actually included on the slate. There are only five drama series and six comedy series honored in any category (aside from stunts), while the limited series races managed to get seven with just two categories. That’s pretty much on par with last year. There are a number of snubs and a few unexpected inclusions, but more of the former. Let’s dive in…

"And the nominees for 'Outstanding Cast who happen to already be famous!' are..."

by Nathaniel R

Each year when the SAG nominations for Outstanding Cast are named, we bemoan the rules which cause unneccessary exclusions. If an actor is in a movie lucky enough to be nominated for OUTSTANDING CAST it doesn't actually mean that they themselves were nominated. Allow us to explain...

SAG Nominations - Movies

We'll have a separate post for the TV nominations a little later today but first, the MOVIE nominations.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS

  • Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye
  • Olivia Colman, The Lost Daughter
  • Lady Gaga, House of Gucci
  • Jennifer Hudson, Respect
  • Nicole Kidman, Being the Ricardos

Instant Impression: The morning's biggest shock -- no Kristen Stewart in Spencer. I'm okay with this but the internet won't be...

BAFTA Long Lists reveal potentially dire nomination slates

Every year the BAFTA long lists remind us that we are sooooo glad that Oscar doesn't do this in the major category. We really like our delusional world where voters are actually watching screeners and not just voting for the most high profile things in every category. For one, BAFTA longlists have mostly ignored non-English language films that people were feeling hopeful about in the awards race (Parallel Mothers, Drive My Car, Titane, Worst Person in the World, etc) except for in the international category. Similar the animation longlist is all big studio American stuff (with the exception of Flee). These are all clear "stay in your lane!" signs from voters. For another, they actually think films like House of Gucci is worthy all of the place and that Don't Look Up has worthy elements in all four of the acting races. Argh!

But at any rate here are the BAFTA longlists. Reminder: These are NOT nominations, just what the nominations coming on February 3rd will be drawn from. The following info is pulled directly from the BAFTA site...

Through Her Lens: 2015 (The 88th Oscars)

A series by Juan Carlos OjanoPrevious Episodes: 20162017 | 2018 | 2019 | Introduction / Explanation

The sting of the #OscarsSoWhite movement from the 87th Oscars continued as no people of color were nominated in the acting categories for the second consecutive year. Idris Elba won the SAG for Supporting Actor for Beasts of No Nation, but Netflix was a completely new player at the time and unable to get traction in the Oscar race. Jada Pinkett Smith called for an Oscar boycott after her husband Will Smith missed in Actor, but his film Concussion had disappointed at the box office and received mixed reviews. The tension was high enough that The Hollywood Reporter even felt the need to clarify that “there [were] no minority actresses in genuine contention for an Oscar [that] year”.

The lack of diversity extended to gender in Best Director (the subject of this series) where no female directors were in the conversation with the arguable exception of Angelina Jolie early on before By the Sea began to screen...
