Gay Best Friend: Damian in "Mean Girls" (2004)

a series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope

"She doesn't even go here" - Daniel Franzese steals yet another scene as Damian in "Mean Girls."Everyone remembers their first.

I don’t think Damian from Mean Girls was the first gay character I saw on screen. So many comedies throughout the 90s and early 00s used gay characters as easy punchlines or setup for gay panic jokes. However, Damian was the first time I saw someone who said it was ok to be gay. It would be many years before I myself came out, but Damian always felt like a touchstone to come back to. With that in mind, it's easy to wonder how common it is for AMPAS to honor artists who have already passed.

For trivia purposes, here's a list of all posthumous Oscar nominations divided by category. Only competitive prizes were included, so no honorary awards...

Beauty Break: Celebrity Bunnies

Something that just occurred to us on this Easter Sunday. You know what the pandemic robbed us of? Dolly Parton recreating this 1978 photoshoot for Playboy. She was in talks to do it for her 75th birthday at some point according to various news sources. But her birthday came and went in January with no news of the sort. Obviously this did not come to pass!

After the jump other film and tv and music stars as beautiful bunnies...

Streaming Roulette (April Pt 1): Clive Owen's breakthrough, a Marvel dud, and the Rocky franchise

And the state didn't even think to verify it just once? To check on this madman who got into every hospital. Just once to check this stuff used by all the hospitals!

Reminder: Collective, which is up for Best Documentary Feature AND Best International Feature is now streaming on Hulu.

Yes it's time for another round of streaming roulette where we point out titles that are new(ish) to streaming or about to leave and just for fun, freeze frame them at totally random places in the scroll bar and whatever comes up we share. Let's go...
