International Contenders: Costa Rica, Greece, Malaysia, etc

Since the last "roundup" updated we've had 8 more countries join the next Oscar race for Best International Feature Film bringing the total list to 34 (the list usually reaches around 90 though we suspect less this year due to COVID-19). They are...

• COSTA RICA - Land of Ashes
• GREECE - Apples
• MALAYSIA - Roh/Soul
• THE NETHERLANDS - Bulado (previously featured)
• PERU - Song Without a Name
• SPAIN - The Endless Trench (finalists previously discussed) 
• SWEDEN - Charter (previously featured)
• VENEZUELA - Once Upon a Time in Venezuela  

You can read more about the films at those Oscar chart links. So far there is a very noticeable lack of famous auteurs with a lot of debut films in the mix so who knows what Oscar might select!

What will be Portugal's choice?

Just this weekend, I was singing the praises of Pedro Costa's Vitalina Varela. Lo and behold, the shadowy chamber drama is one of four finalists for Portugal's Oscar submission. A jury of the Portuguese Film Academy, made up of directors Gonçalo Galvão Teles, Lauro António and Monique Rutler, actors Isabel Abreu and Welket Bungué, and cinematographer Miguel Sales Lopes, has selected their finalists from a list of 33 eligible features. International Contender: Canada, Germany, Japan, and more...

Since the last posting of this kind we've had six new submissions announced for Oscar's International Feature Film race, bringing the total to 25 thus far. We're tracking both here on the Oscar charts and at letterboxd. (We usually end up around 90 titles but we suspect there will be fewer titles this year due to the pandemic and the resulting cinema chaos.)

More International Oscar News: Several "Finalist" Lists Announced

The Man Standing Next ...has the difficult task of following in Parasite's footsteps!

The submission charts for Oscar's Best International Feature Film race have been updated to reflect more new entries like Croatia's Extracurricular, Palestine's Gaza Mon Amour, Panama's war drama Causa Justa , Romania's documentary Collective, and South Korea's The Man Standing Next.

But the big news at the moment is six finalist lists so keep your eye out for any of these pictures to rise up...

Will Mads Mikkelsen have another Oscar hit?

Mads Mikkelsen stars in "Another Round"

Denmark is currently Oscar's favourite country in the Best International Feature category. Yes, we know they're not the "all time" favourite country, so don't @ us. But in the past 10 years (2010-2019) they've been nominated 50% of the time, with two additional finalists. Deep involvement in 70% of the Oscar conversations in a decade is a pretty great track record. How long can they keep it up? We won't know if they'll nab another nomination this season until a few months from now but Denmark just announced their finalists. On November 17th, they'll choose their submission between the following films: 

• Another Round by Thomas Vinterberg 
• A Perfectly Normal Family by Malou Reymann
• Shorta by Anders Ølholm and Frederik Louis Hviid. 

If Denmark wants to bet based on past success they'll go with Another Round.  It just won the top prize at the London Film Festival. Plus, international star Mads Mikkelsen has headlined three Oscar-nominated films from his home country previously....
