Netflix to Give "Sense8" One Final Hurrah

Chris here, with news for Sense8 fans. The series was unceremoniously canceled by Netflix shortly after the airing of the kinky sci-fi series's second season, and the outcry online was vocal. But here is another success story where fanbase outrage saves a beloved niche series: Netflix has announced a two-hour special finale to arrive next year. While this may not be another season like fans had hoped, it gives the Wachowski sisters some space to tie up a few loose ends and maybe another showstopping bit of naughtiness.

This makes for an interesting development for Netflix as well as they begin to start giving the axe to their less popular (or expensive, like Sense8 proved to be) programming. The streaming service is moving faster on dumping newbies like Girlboss and The Get Down, but this does show a certain care for their departing shows that have fan support. There are plenty of examples of shows that end strong from a set end date, so Netflix is also providing the Wachowski's an opportunity to end strong rather than fizzle out. Like HBO's Looking this past season, Sense8 is about to become one lean and unique entry for the television history books.

Pride Month Doc Corner: 'No Dress Code Required'

We have been looking at LGBTIQ-themed documentaries for Pride Month. We conclude this mini-series with No Dress Code Required, which just played the Human Rights Watch Film Festival.

Right off the bat, director Cristina Herrera Borquez has a leg-up on other LGBTIQ civil rights documentaries by focusing on a (presumably) little-known fight for marriage equality in the Mexican state of Baja California. Queer stories from this region are not surprisingly few and far between. In No Dress Code Required we follow a gay couple – Victor Fernando Urias Amparo and Victor Manuel Aguirre Espinoza (“The Victors”) – who are withheld from marrying in spite of Mexican law.

What starts as Borquez simply documenting the seemingly minor court case, eventually leads to her having a front row seat in a national media frenzy that shines a necessary light on the dynamics of Mexico’s complicated relationship with the gay rights movement...

The Winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 9 Is...

Chris here. The ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race came to a close last night with the series's most dramatic conclusion ever. At last week's reunion, Mama Ru teased that a sudden death lipsync battle would crown America's Next Drag Superstar from our beloved top four. This curveball was another shakeup from the show's formula, and feels like how the winner should have been chosen all along. While past seasons' crownings have been dull slogs to awarding an obvious winner, this kept the competition alive until the very second - and gave us two all-time great lipsync performances from the ultimate champion.

Trinity Taylor was the randomly selected first queen and chose Peppermint as her opponent, pitting a potential frontrunner against underdog lipsync assassin. But that meant leaving besties Sasha Velour and Shea Couleé to duke it out...
