International Oscar Update: A Boat Load of Official Contenders

We have now reached the season where it's hard to keep up with all the updates and it will keep on being this way throughout September. Nevertheless I'm at least keeping the submission charts up to date. At this writing twenty-five countries have selected their official contender for Best International Feature Film. We can safely expect another 60 or so countries to submit by the deadline of October 1. In terms of participation the category peaked at 97 contenders back in 2020 and has been dipping slightly since and has returned to 2010 numbers (the high 80s).

Intl' Oscar Updates: Austria, Ireland, Thailand, Etc...

It's your weekly Monday dose of Oscar news, subtitled division. Our official submission list is now 9 pictures long, 6 of which we've already discussed in previous posts. In regards to the "already featured" we now know that Germany decided among their finalists and went with Cannes hit Sound of Falling (reviewed by Elisa). We've also taken this opportunity to update the submission charts so they're now in full swing:

• Chart 1 Afghanistan to Guatemala -4 submissions and 2 in-process decisions
• Chart 2 Haiti to Nortway  -1 submission and 3 in-process decisions
• Chart 3 Palestine to Yemen -4 submissions and 4 in-process decisions
• Predictions - top 20 possibilities (official & otherwise)

Intl' Oscar Updates: Bulgaria, Chile, Palestine, Philippines, Spain

Multiple but brief International Oscar updates for you this fine Monday morning. We'd previously discussed the possibilities from Switzerland and three finalists from Czech Republic. Both countries have now made their decisions. Switzerland is going with The Late Shift, a hospital drama starring Leonie Benesch (September 5, Babylon Berlin). Czech Republic refused the recommendation from their Academy (which was trying to steer their votes to a different film) and went with the experimental documentary I'm Not Everything I Want To Be by Klára Tasovská which focuses on a photographer that's considered the 'Czech Nan Goldin.'

South Korean Film Awards & the Oscar Race

THE UGLY... one of 19 films competing to become the Oscar submission

Since we've just starting hearing about Oscar submission decisions from the 100+ countries that Oscar invites to participate each year, let's talk about a country that wisely invested in their own arts, with both deregulation and regulation tactics (reducing government censorship whilst protecting home-grown cinema from Hollywood dominance via screen quotas) for the past couple of decades. The results have been impressive and South Korean entertainment is big in multiple countries now, including the US. While their cinema has been popular and lauded for some time, the American Oscars haven’t quite come around, with the sole exception of Bong Joon-Ho's Parasite (2019). It helped that Parasite had a) absolutely exquisite timing of festivals-to-theater-to-awards pipeline and b) was easy to spot as an instant classic / masterpiece. The former is hard (though not impossible) to manage and the latter is exceedingly rare! 

We suspect that Oscar’s resistance to South Korean cinema has to do with the Academy's general genre-aversion...
