Box Office: The Wrath of the Mirror Games in the Yemen

On Thursday night, Hunger Games became the highest grossing film of 2012 (thus far) so it entered its second weekend having already slain its competition. How much further can this film go? This is a very good year for both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. Josh is nearing $100 million with his other top ten'er too. But if we're taking votes for EW's  "Entertainer of the Year"... I think it's obvious that Channing Tatum is going to chart, with two 100 million hits already and more films to come.

Strong holds for Tatum's comedy and Hunger Games squeezed some of the potential life out of the two new mainstream hopefuls.

What did you see this weekend? I saw Mirror Mirror (review tomorrow) and gave The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo a second spin on DVD. No, I don't know why I haven't seen Salmon Fishing yet. Ewan & Emily? That sounds like a wonderful pairing. What's keeping me. Oh, yes. Constructing the Oscar charts. It's time consuming.

Box Office: Hungry For a Potter/Twilight Replacement

Audiences were ridiculously eager to collectively devour their new multi-year franchise, giving Hunger Games with no bankable stars and only books to sell it, a gargantuan opening weekend... right up there with Batman and Spider-Man with nary a superpower in sight... unless you count archery skills. I guess Hawkeye would. You'd think people were actually reading (gasp) given the enormous success of these bestseller-to-movie transfers for about a decade now. Sadly the numbers do not bear this out with one famous study claiming that 27% of adults in the US don't even read one book a year. 

As I walked into my consulting job Friday I overheard two women talking, and the conversation might have been scripted for an informercial specifically designed to sell tickets... 

Younger Woman: What is this Hunger Games? Everyone is talking about it!
Slightly Older Woman: It's going to kick Twilight's ass. Do you want to know the premise? 

I knew it would be big but I didn't know it'd be colossal.

How early did you have to show up to get a good seat? We arrived 30 minutes early and that was just barely enough time to get two seats together... on the side. My preference is middle middle but whose isn't? They always fill up first.

Two Box Office Lists, One "A Separation" Inspired

It was a big weekend for spoofing familiar concepts with 21 Jump Street filling movie houses and the only other top ten newbie Casa De Mi Padre, doing a parodic riff on Mexican movies starring Will Ferrell and everyone's favorite Mexican tag team: Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna. Would love to hear from anyone who saw the latter in the comments since this one slipped me by and GGB is an old favorite. (My review of 21 Jump Street will be up tomorrow evening.)

Another Milestone for A Separation
Asgar Farhadi's Oscar winner A Separation (our favorite of 2011) continues its incredible theatrical run passing the 5 million mark. Five million for an Iranian family drama at the US box office? Unheard of. Every once in a blue moon the nation's box office gives us good news for quality cinema. While we're here why not a look back at the biggest foreign hits from the past year?

Disclaimer: I didn't count The Artist. Though it's foreign, it's silent so we're excluding it but you'll understand that if we did it'd be number one with an incredible $42 million. Don't believe those naysayers that call it a box office disappointment. Black and white + no stars + silent + foreign = $42 million is big big numbers.

Kristin Scott Thomas continues to be a draw ... at least when subtitled.

ol' faithfuls French cinema and Bollywood continue to have the most reliable ticket buyers in the US arthouses. Bollywood movies don't need any press attention at all to find audiences. Even if you follow the movies religiously chances are you haven't heard of their annual hits if you're not out there looking for them. France is a different story in that way, getting and needing the media push.

Hrithik Roshan & Shah Rukh Khan are superstars of Bollywood. So is the male physique.

And also: What is it with Bollywood and über muscley male superstars? Bollywood men are way more objectified than their Hollywood counterparts.

Jeon Do Yeon, our favorite Korean actressjust outside the list Japan's ultra violent epic 13 Assassins got some attention and press but didn't quite cross the million mark.

sad observation Though South Korea is where it's at right now for regional cinema heat (as opposed to heat tied to specific filmmakers) the country's cinema has yet to catch on with arthouse moviegoers here in the States. Despite huge acclaim Mother, Thirst and Poetry, three of the most interesting films of the past few years, didn't totally catch on. None of them crossed the magic million dollar mark and only one of them passed ½ a million. The Housemaid and Secret Sunshine were also not true breakthroughs despite the exciting lead actressing of Jeon Do-Yeon.

Overheard @ Box Office: "You can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss"

Overheard on Friday:

Woman#1: (Defeated sounding) I have to take my son to see The Lorax. 
Cheerful Female Friend: Ohhh, you can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss!"  

Cheerful Female Friend has clearly not registered the atrocities Hollywood has often made from the good doctor's work. And when one thinks of the colorful wit and profound whimsy of Dr. Seuss surely mainstream heartthrobs like Zac Efron and Taylor Swift pop immediately to mind! What a, uhhhh, perfect vocal match.

But Cheerful Female Friend speaks for all of America. So testifies the box office!

Talking Points

Reese, Amanda, and Jen have seen better box office days

• BLONDE BUT BANKABLE? Reese Witherspoon's movies are generally expensive to make but that return on investment these days. Yikes. This Means War is still a long way from recouping its budget. Jennifer Aniston movies have always had schizophrenic box office performance but Wanderlust is definitely on the weak side of her ticket-selling. How on earth was that sperm-switching comedy more attractive to moviegoers than this one? Meanwhile Amanda Seyfried hasn't been able to scare up crowds from Gone which is weirder. It's a genre flick and can't those usually open even without a name? $8 million for a serial killer picture after two weeks? Ouch. I'm sure it doesn't help that the ads totally make it seem like something Ashley Judd was making in the early 90s.

• EXCUSE ME, BUT WHO IS PAYING TO SEE GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE? I mean, besides our masochistic Michael C. It's already made more money than 2011's "Best Picture"... which had a big uptick post Oscar of course (The Artist's co-nominees took falls but Hugo fell only 14% despite also debuting on DVD so maybe its constant name-checking on Sunday night convinced some holdouts?)

• A SEPARATION more than doubled its screen count and had its first million dollar weekend, bringing its total to $3.7 million at the US box office. That there is a big big number for a non-genre subtitled picture.

What did you see this weekend? Was it worth the money? I was having an offline recuperation weekend so I went to see a Norwegian band at The Bitter End that one of my friends recommended called Mhoo. They're so good. Have a listen!

Even when I'm at non-film events I can't stop thinking of movies. While the girls were singing I kept thinking "Kiki Dunst and Leelee Sobieski should play them in a movie!"
