Emmy Category Analysis: Fantasy Costumes

From 2015 to 2017, fantasy and sci-fi costumes were awarded alongside period stylings at the Emmys. Then, in 2018, they got their own category. Unlike the category for contemporary costumes, this one's fond of repeats. At least, it was fond of Game of Thrones, which won the race thrice. For the past two years, though, this has been a category where the TV Academy honors big superhero productions. Watchmen and Wandavision are our most recent winners, and either Loki or Moon Knight could continue the trend. Emmy Category Analysis: Contemporary Costumes

Unlike at the Oscars, contemporary costume design is regularly recognized by the Emmys. That's what happens when you have over one hundred categories, including separate prizes for costumes, depending on the type of narrative. This specific award has only existed since 2015, and so far, no show has won it twice, making for a nice reprieve from the TV Academy's usual allergy to spreading the wealth. Indeed, none of this year's nominees is a previous victor, though half of them have competed before. 

Usually, new programs have an advantage but never discount the power of a sweep – Schitt's Creek won on its second try as part of its final season's Emmy dominance. In other words, as with other categories, The White Lotus is well positioned to take home the gold…

Billy Crudup is the only actor not competing with a costar

This category feels sort of neat in terms of how it’s split: 8 slots, 4 shows. 4 returning nominees from 2 years ago, and 4 actors from new series. The only actor representing his show solo is also the only one who’s won before - Billy Crudup. There's no definitive frontrunner this time which is sort of exciting. 2022 Emmys: Comedy Supporting Actress

Hannah Waddingham hopes to win a second consecutive Emmy for her work in "Ted Lasso."What happens when winners collide? The Comedy Supporting Actress race is loaded with three past winners this year. Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham looks to repeat last year’s win for season two of the hit Apple TV+ program. Meanwhile, both Alex Borstein (Marvelous Mrs Maisel) and Kate McKinnon (SNL) could add a third Emmy trophy to their mantle. McKinnon took home the prize in both 2016 and 2017, with Borstein following in 2018 and 2019. 

As powerful as these three are, it would be unwise to count out the newcomers. Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph contend for the first season of Abbott Elementary, while Sarah Niles enters the race for her first appearance on Ted Lasso. Both Hannah Einbender and Juno Temple also earned their second consecutive nomination for their roles in Hacks and Ted Lasso, respectively. Who will take home the gold? Let’s break down the race...

2022 Emmy Category Analysis: Limited Series, Directing/Writing

the riveting intriguing 1st episode of Station Eleven, "Wheel of Fire"

It's difficult to talk stats and predictions with the Limited Series categories since they've gone through so many identity shifts and upheavals in the past dozen years or so. For example, TV Movies are still eligible to compete for writing and directing prizes right here BUT they almost never do while TV Movies have always had their own top category BUT they used to be able to compete directly with limited series instead IF they were movie-length episodes of an Anthology Series. Confusing!  Let it suffice to say that there is only a little data that applies when predicting given frequent rule changes and the more Oscar-like shifts in eligibility since you can't usually honor the same things year after year. So we (mostly) have to go on pure feeling. And that's more fun anyway, so it's all good.
