Yellowjackets helped Showtime stay on top in terms of LGBTQ representation

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has released their annual WHERE WE ARE NOW ON TV report. The report looks at LGBTQ+ representation via series regulars or recurring characters on scripted television shows across the three platforms: broadcast, cable, and streaming. It covers shows airing between June 1st, 2021 and May 31st, 2022. The shows that haven't aired yet are stastically factored in only when casting has been confirmed by content providers (Notably Apple TV+ AND Disney+ declined to confirm when it came to unaired shows) so the report might have discrepancies.

Those extensive GLAAD nominations

Despite being a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community there is one organization that I've rarely understood: GLAAD or The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The things they've backed over the years have been puzzling though obviously their purpose is just. All minority groups can benefit from organizations that work to prevent systemic discrimination and in the case of what we see and hear in the arts, harmful depictions. But anyway... on to this season's nominations!  In completely nonsensical news they've maintained their "wide" and "limited" categorizations for movies -- which were previously smart distinctions in the world of cinema -- but applied them to the world of streaming where we all live now. The categories are instantly rendered comical. How can The Prom be a wide release but The Boys in the Band be a limited release when they're both available on the exact same platform in the exact same amount of households for the exact same price? 

Ah well, nothing about 2020 made sense so it's naturally bleeding into 2021 now. After the jump their nominations...

GLAAD Media Award Winners 2018

GLAAD,  The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, announces their annual awards in two parts each year. Earlier this month they handed out a slew of awards in Los Angeles with Britney Spears and Jim Parsons honored and this weekend they finished out in New York horing Ava DuVernay and Samira Wiley (though we haven't yet seen videos of the New York ceremony). Melissa Etheridge and Adam Lambert performed a new arrangement of Etheridge's classic hit "I'm the Only One" to mark the 25th anniversary of her quadruple platinum "Yes, I Am" album which was a watershed moment in LGBT visibility in rock and roll. 25 years... wow. Remember Juliette Lewis giving one her best performances ever in the video to "Come to My Window"? The latter song also won Melissa Etheridge her final Grammy Award though she's been nominated several times since.  

But back to the now or the recent now. This is probably the last time you'll hear about awards for Call Me By Your Name as the world moves on to whatever 2018 and 2019 have in store. GLAAD Nominees, Iceman, and Professor Marston

This just in. The GLAAD nominations for portrayals of the LGBT community are out. This is a different group than the critics group that I vote with (the one from lgbt entertainment journalists) and their focus is less on quality -- or it has been in the past -- than on battling homophobia and fighting for inclusion. Their full name gives you their raison d'etre history: the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. They've made significant blunders in their years (supporting I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry would still rankle if anyone still remembered the film) but let's not hold that against them since we love that their purview is so wide (music, comic books, everything) and their purpose admirable.
