"Jingle Jangle" and "Ma Rainey" lead the NAACP Image Award Nominations

Netflix completely reigned over the 52nd annual NAACP Image Award nominations where Jingle Jangle, Ma Rainey and Da 5 Bloods were the top three most nominated films. As we've seen with most of the awards to date from various organizations -- but maybe not with the upcoming Globes, SAG, and the Oscars -- those films that opted to wait until January or February to start screening like Malcolm & Marie, Judas and the Black Messiah and the United States vs Billie Holliday, which are all fully "2021" films, are missing from a lot of the precursor lists. Sometimes that's due to eligibility rules sticking to the calendar year as we're doing and as we assume the NAACP did. Other times it might just be due to the age-old risk that late-breaking awards campaigns take each and every year. When you wait to the last minute you have the distinct advantage of being fresh in the mind should you be nominated coupled with the disadvantage that you might miss the nominations altogether if not enough people screen your work in time.

Oscar Stuff
Feinberg Forecast Feinberg is predicting 10 Oscars for La La Land, losing only 3 categories
Variety on the backlash to La La Land and why "exuberance" matters. I co-sign this post. I hate when films are deemed "not important enough" as that leads to comedies and family films and adventures and romances and all sorts of genres that produce classics being regularly overlooked at the Oscars

Variety Moonlight took the USC Scripter prize for adapted screenplay
Indie Wire Anne Thompson says Moonlight is "guaranteed" one Oscar win. Guaranteed feels like too strong a word for me when both of its potential wins (Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actor) have to face off against a surging Lion which took both of those categories at the BAFTAs

In Case You Missed It
Denzel Washington gave an inspiring speech at the NAACP Image Awards. I'm still torn as to whether he'll pull off a third Oscar win for Fences but I'm rooting for it, since it can't be Viggo!

Image Awards Love "Creed"

Some of the nominees and omissions from the NAACP Image Awards over the years have been truly bizarre. We chalk that up to it not being a film based organization and far more concerned with representation than the movies themselves. Though they are not an Oscar precursor in the traditional way, they do add another insight into which films people are thinking about at this time of year. We expect that Oscar will share their love of Creed. It led the nominations for movies and Michael B Jordan is even up for "Entertainer of the Year".

That's a distinction worth noting because he's the only one of the "Entertainer" nominees that's associatedly directly with the movies for this awards cycle. The rest (Pharell, Shonda & Viola, Misty Copeland) are clearly nominated for their contributions to music, television, and performing arts.

‘Selma’ Wins Big at the AAFCA Awards & NAACP Image Award Nominations

Margaret here with a look at the nominees for the 2014 NAACP Image Awards, as well as the winners of the African American Film Critics Association year-end prizes.

It continues to be a good season for Selma, which racked up eight Image Award nominations-- especially impressive when you consider that there are only seven categories. (Six of its nominations are for acting.) Period drama Belle and James Brown biopic Get On Up both received five nominations each, and the music industry romantic drama Beyond the Lights earned three.

The AAFCA announced their awards, naming Selma best picture alongside nine other outstanding films. The AAFCA Top Ten Films of 2014 are as follows in order of distinction:

• BIRDMAN
• BELLE
• TOP FIVE
