Lupita & Jordan Strike Gold

The huge launch of the new buzzy horror flick Us proved three things. First, that horror is the most reliable genre outside of superheroes for automatically high grosses. Second, that Get Out was no one hit wonder and Jordan Peele's name in the director's chair is something to remain excited about. Third, that Lupita Nyong'o has zero trouble carrying a big picture as its leading lady (which we knew the second we fell for her in 12 Years a Slave but it took six long years for it to actually become fact.) Please no more voice or mo-cap roles, are you listening Hollywood/Lupita's management? We want HER onscreen, not just her voice onscreen with her glamour on red carpets. More after the jump...

Carol Danvers and Gloria Bell had good weekends

As expected Captain Marvel crushed the box office on weekend #1 as Marvel Studio's total domination of the planet continues. Was it its unique position as connective tissue between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame? Was it the novelty (which shouldn't be a novelty) of a female led superhero film? In other box office news Gloria Bell stirred it up on the dance floor with the weekend's second best per-screen average because Julianne Moore is her own super power.

What did you see this weekend? I've been sick all week (ugh) so aside from a Captain Marvel critics screening a week ago I've only been watching old movies and catching up on some TV that I've always meant to watch (Five years late to the party but Broadchurch is soooo good).

TIFF Review: "Gloria Bell"

by Chris Feil

Naturally, English language remakes of already great (and recent, at that) foreign language treasures are a dubious business. But Sebastián Lelio’s revisiting of his own Gloria, formery led by the immaculate Paulina García, presents a convincing alternative to other misguided or less effective attempts. Now titled Gloria Bell and starring Julianne Moore, this version is one not only worthy of its predecessor, but an equal that may even edge it out ever so slightly...
