Review: "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"

by Chris Feil

Superhero sequels these days seem burdened to go more bigger than bombastic. If the entire human race isn’t at stake and they aren’t finding new ways to topple more and more skyscrapers, they aren’t following the rules of engagement. So it is with some relief that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 operates very much on the same level and ambitions as its predecessor, its sights on delivering what it did before and just as well. It gets what we loved about it before, and doesn’t mistake it for empty spectacle.

That means more bickering, more quips, and more retro tunes as our space badasses once again defend the galaxy - but also about the same amount of scale in regards to what they are saving us from...

Baby Groot Pushing Buttons, Stealing Teasers

Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 2 arrives in five months time. Baby Groot steals this new teaser though we'll surely have more of them in which the others try to steal it back. Good luck with that.

The last Guardians took the world by surprise to become the third biggest global and domestic hit of its year (despite next to zero brand recognition before it arrived) and two Oscar nominations (Makeup and Visual Effects). Volume 2 won't have its element of surprise but what do you think the outcome will be?

"Guardians - Vol. 2" is Coming - Obviously

Chris here with some Marvel goodness. With Doctor Strange about to hit theatres, naturally Marvel is ready to stoke the masses for their next superhero tentpole: Guardians of the Galaxy - Vol. 2. This one comes with a little more goodwill attached considering the first installment was (mostly) warmly received. It also set a high bar for what they can achieve outside of their flagship characters, both in fan support and box office.

Take a look at the teaser below, with first impressions and a very 90s Guess Jeans-inspired poster after the jump...

Elizabeth Debicki in Guardians Vol 2 and The Night Manager

Murtada here. Big studio franchises are aggressively courting actressexuals. Following in the heels of Laura Dern joining Star Wars, now comes the news that Elizabeth Debicki will be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

Debicki is sort of an obsession at The Film Experience. We  wrote about her here. And here. She is short listed for Villain of the Year at The Film Bitch Awards. Debicki stole The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015) and was the most arresting figure in The Great Gatsby (2013). So much so, we thought Gatsby will be remembered mostly for being the first film in her huge career, more than anything else.

Debicki’s Guardians 2 character is being kept secret. The internet though is rife with speculation...

Showtune to Go
In addition to Magic Mike being in the pop culture air lately, during channel flipping this week I caught Hugh Jackman's filmed stage show of Oklahoma! again and remembered how much I loved Patrick Wilson in it on Broadway and began wondering why he doesn't do musicals anymore? To be frank, I don't understand his career choices at all but he should definitely do another stage musical. It's a no brainer. So let's combine the two threads with a Tony clip of Patrick Wilson's stripper musical based on the 1997 Best Picture nominee which predated Magic Mike by a lot. (Lots of fun star cameos in this Tony clip including some we've lost -- Anne Bancroft. *sniffle*)
