Both Shira Haas and Helen Mirren to Play Golda Meir

There are now officially two projects in development about former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. The first, announced a month ago, is a TV series produced by Barbra Streisand called Lioness starring Shira Haas. The second, reported earlier today, is a film from Israeli director Guy Nattiv that will feature Helen Mirren. Golda Meir has been performed for cameras and on stage several times and the role is often an awards magnet. Both Ingrid Bergman and Judy Davis (A Woman Called Golda, 1982) were Emmy nominated playing her, and Tovah Feldshuh received a Tony nomination (Golda's Balcony, 2003). She always brings a bottle of great wine, wears loud colored clothes and tells stories of the scandals of distant family members of generations ago. She'll always manage to surprise you in new, yet similar ways.

What would the Golden Globes be without their penchant for movie stars, musicals with extra glitter and star vehicles that may or may not exist? 4 things that happened on this day, December 31st, in showbiz history

1992 Czechoslovakia is peacefully dissolved and the Czech Republic and Slovakia both emerge from the split. Which means, for our purposes here at TFE that they started all new Oscar submission histories ;) Czechoslovakia had had six Oscar nominations and two wins from 23 submissions the bulk of which were in Czech (though one of their winners, The Shop on Main Street was Slovakian). Interestingly enough just after the split in 1993 only Slovakia submitted to the Oscars while the Czech Republic took a year off. The Czech Repubic has since won one Oscar (Kolya) and had two additional nominations (Divided We Fall and Zelary) and a finalist (The Painted Bird last season). The Czech submission this year is Charlatan. Slovakia has yet to be nominated though they have a Holocaust drama this year, The Auschwitz Report...

Beauty Break: Ten Sexiest Witches in Movies

In the absence of writing time today, how about a visual list. Have you ever wondered why there are so few male witches (or warlocks if you will) in cinema? They're far more common on television. And when warlocks or sorcerers are portrayed in cinema they're usually asexual (sorry but Doctor Strange is the least sexy Avenger!) or old men and are just as likely to be good as evil.

Witches on the other hand are often sexual and usually beautiful... though the beauty is often an illusion. Many of those most glamorous witches are hiding a hideous side -- like they're secretly an old decrepit crone or something less than human (think of Anjelica Huston in The Witches... which we often do). Or maybe they are beautiful but their favourite disguise is something hideous (think Snow White's Queen). This frightening dichotomy and their dangerous sexuality surely has got heaps to do with cinema's male gaze. (This is a way of saying that we hoped for some gender parity in this holiday list of "Sexy Witches!" but it's almost all women.)
