Review: A New Take on "Fatal Attraction" (Paramount+)

By Christopher James

You can’t capture lightning in a bottle twice. Paramount+’s new trip through its catalog is the TV series adaptation of Fatal Attraction, the 1987 blockbuster. In trying to modernize this erotic thriller, this new show impressively falls short in all regards. All of its new additions involve introducing grating new characters or dulling the iconic affair duo with the clunkiest of backstories. Rather than be a new story entirely, Fatal Attraction tries to shoe-in callbacks to the original with all the tact and subtlety of a woman boiling a bunny… oops. Making matters worse, the talented cast is left completely adrift - caught in the uncanny valley of putting their own stamp on iconic characters but unable to shake off imitating Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. In both cases, they are very pale imitations.

In short, Fatal Attraction is an epic misfire across all fields...

TV Musicals: Schmigadoon (Apple TV+) & Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies (Paramount+)

By Christopher James

TV is embracing the musical. Just this week, two new musical series premiered on different streaming services - season two of Schmigadoon (now tackling 60s/70s darker musicals) on Apple TV+ and Grease: The Rise of the Pink Ladies on Paramount+. Both series use previous musical IP as a launching pad for new stories, one a parody and one an “origin story.” While the level of success varies between the shows (hell, sometimes it varies episode-to-episode), it is wonderful to see new musicals with original songs streaming on our TVs in the same week...

Review: "Infinite" on Paramount+

By Abe Friedtanzer

There are those who believe in reincarnation, the idea that, when people die, they return eventually in another life. If, somehow, those who had lived before were able to recall what they had been through, they might be able to take lessons from it and create a better world. Yet it’s just as likely that, given the opportunity to dwell on centuries or millennia of knowledge about how society functions, many would attempt to exploit or destroy it for their own aims. That’s the setup of Infinite, a film with a bold concept that relies very little on logic to play out its all-too-familiar story.

To explain the premise of this film shouldn’t be all that difficult, but I’m not sure I can offer a coherent breakdown of how it’s all supposed to work. Basically, people called Infinites are able to recall their past lives, but they have to be reminded of everything they’ve experienced before...

The Tony Awards will be on Paramount+ this year

Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo in "Moulin Rouge: The Musical"

Here's a twist we didn't see coming: the long delayed Tony Awards will be on Paramount+ streaming service this September 26th at 7 PM EST followed by a starry Broadway-celebrating concert on CBS (the usual home of the Tony Awards) at 9 PM EST (both shows are two hours long). That's great timing since the shows begin to return on September 2nd (as previously discussed).

All of the awards but three will be handed out on the Paramount portion of the evening...
