Shira Haas up for another Ophir Award!

by Nathaniel R

Alena Yiv and Shira Haas as mother and daughter in ASIA

Our current actress obsession Shira Haas may have lost the Emmy she deserved to win a week ago for Unorthodox but she has another shot at an acting trophy this year. The 25 year-old actress is once again up for the highest film honor in her home country, the Ophir Award. She's nominated for Best Supporting Actress for a mother/daughter Israeli drama called Asia. The drama won three prizes early this year as NY's Tribeca Film Festival, including Best Actress for Shira (though she's nominated for Supporting at home). This is Haas' fifth Ophir nod, two of which have been for lead actress and three for supporting. She won this same category just two years ago for a film called Pere Atzil.

Due to the COVID pandemic there's no date for the Ophir ceremony yet (which is usually held right about now). As you may recall, the annual winner for their Feature Film category automatically becomes Israel's Oscar submission (unless there's some reason it can't be the submission). UPDATE:  You can see all the nominees and some of the winners (details are hard to come by so far) after the jump. IMDb doesn't even have all of them and most articles only list the "top" categories. But we're always trying to keep you informed...

Emmy Review: Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie

by Juan Carlos

We now reach this hotly contested category, consisting of Emmy favorites, Oscar winners, and a breakout performer. Aside from Regina King and Cate Blanchett, pundits were trying out several combinations of who would fill the remaining slots, especially with the decrease from six to five nominees. Unbelievable is competing for Limited Series, but neither of its widely predicted leads Merritt Wever or Kaitlyn Dever made it. Previous Emmy winners and nominees that were also in the running but didn't make it included Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Dockery, Helen Mirren, Ellie Kemper, and Aunjanue Ellis.

Without further ado, let's consider the lucky five who were nominated...

Emmy Reactions Survey Pt 1: Fav Nominations, Snubs, and the Problematic "Guest" Categories

HBO's Watchmen and Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs Maisel led the Emmy nominations with 26 and 20 nominations respectively though it was Netflix that had the biggest morning, breaking the record for most nominations (previously held by HBO) with 160 (!!!). As is our habit we polled Team Experience on their reactions. Here's what they had to say about the following three questions which we hope you'll answer, too, in the comments.

  • What was your favourite surprise this morning?

  • What omission perplexes or enrages you?

  • How would you fix the guest categories which are now just like the other categories repeating the same performers each year (series regulars with small parts instead of true "guests")?

The biggest question marks before the Emmy nominations

By Abe Fried-Tanzer

We’re less than two weeks from the Emmy nominations announcement, and voting has officially closed. We have plenty of information now, including who’s on the ballot and how many nominees there will be in each category. Before we unveil our final predictions next week, let’s address some of the major unknowns and how they could play out across the board.

Just how well will frontrunners Succession and Schitt’s Creek do? Most prognosticators expect that these two shows could win the top prizes, with nominations at least  are guaranteed. But, looking to last year, neither actually performed all that well in other categories...

Curio: "Unorthodox" and "Normal People"

by Nathaniel R

"Normal People" animation by Nadia Hazzahrah

Though I thought about sharing my personal Emmy ballot I realized I would have to abstain since I haven't seen some of the key series that many feel are deserving. This is not true of the limited series category where I have seen enough to have passionate favourites and others I do not care for (sorry Little Fires Everywhere and Hollywood). My ballot would read like so:

  • Mrs America
  • Normal People
  • Unbelievable
  • Unorthodox ★
  • Watchmen

So for this week's Curio let's look at fan art for the two shows from that ballot that we're most worried about Emmy voters skipping...
