How many men from "Ted Lasso" can earn nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series?

In terms of precursors and returning nominees, we are flying blind with Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, which is exciting.

We only have one returning eligible performer this year (Kenan Thompson - Saturday Night Live). Both the SAG and Golden Globe Awards didn’t nominate a single eligible comedy supporting actor performance. Both went all-in on Schitt’s Creek and last year’s winner, Dan Levy. The Critics Choice TV Awards pointed out some dark horse favorites that could have a shot in this wide open category. However, this is a wide open category that will likely be a key place where new shows can demonstrate their strength and rack up nominations. Shows like Ted Lasso and The Flight Attendant could make a big splash here, or the Emmys could just nominate a majority of the Saturday Night Live cast.

Emmy Watch: Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

I was going into this category thinking that it might actually boast the highest percentage of possible returning nominees – a full 50% of last year’s slate, which in this crazy time is actually a lot. But Black Monday and its star Don Cheadle don’t appear to be eligible since they counted the four final episodes of season two, which aired last summer, last year, and even though the show returned a few weeks ago, there just aren’t enough installments for Showtime to bother to submit it (apparently). If it does somehow end up on the ballot, count Cheadle in again. The two surefire returning nominees are Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), vying for his seventh bid, and Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), set to earn his third and final nomination for this role. There’s a reason Ted Lasso has endured through all these months.  When the world shut down and every piece of news was about the worst possible people doing the worst possible things, we needed a bit of positivity in our lives.  Enter the world’s sunniest dispositioned football/futbol coach in Jason Sudekis’ Ted Lasso.

Emmy Watch: An almost all-new lineup for Best Comedy Series

We opened last year’s look at this category with a caveat that, compared with the Best Drama Series race, there were considerably fewer contenders here. That’s true again this time, with just one (!) of last year’s nominees eligible and two other series that were nominated in the past possible as return inclusions. With so many slots open, there is tremendous room for new shows to break in, but few clues exist as to what’s at the head of the pack beyond a few frontrunners. Let’s dive in…

Will the Golden Globes Reward New Shows Again This Year?

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host the Golden Globes, airing on NBC on Sunday, February 28th.It’s no secret that the Golden Globes love new TV shows. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is always hoping to crown a bright newcomer on the TV landscape. This doesn’t always translate to Emmys love (sorry The Affair and Brooklyn Nine-Nine), but it’s a great way to raise the profile of a show. 

Based on the nominations, the Golden Globes are once again skewing towards new shows. On the Drama side, both Lovecraft Country and Ratched are competing for their first seasons. Meanwhile, Comedy/Musical is stacked with new series, such as Emily in Paris, The Flight Attendant, The Great and Ted Lasso. Only Schitt’s Creek is not in its first season, though this is the first time it will be competing in the Comedy Series field at the Golden Globes. Schitt's Creek is also coming off Emmy domination for its final season.
