Cozy Up to "Our Souls At Night"

Chris here. Lost in the festival announecement hullabaloo was the announcement that the screen legend pairing of Jane Fonda and Robert Redford Our Souls At Night will be debuting out of competition at Venice. Shouldn't we be a little more excited that we're getting these megastars in a new love story?

The film arrives on Netflix on September 29, so maybe it's also just lost in the theatrical vs. streaming debate as well. But it seems the legends have something lovely in store: both star as neighbors who get another chance at love after losing their respective partners. The film comes from The Lunchbox's Ritesh Batra and (500) Days of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, so expect a certain degree of warm fuzzies to go with your stargazing. Netflix just dropped a charming little teaser with Fonda and Redford getting cozy on their road trip, so it begs the question: which screen performance of Fonda or Redford would you must want to snuggle up to?

NYFF Lineup: Call me by your florida project, Meyerowitz

The New York Film Festival's 55th edition begins on September 28th and runs through the first two weeks of October. This year they're super hooked on France (not that there's anything wrong with that) and their longstanding compulsion to screen every single thing that the prolific South Korean director Hong Sang-Soo has ever shot results in him hogging 2 of the 25 slots. Predicting a Hong Sang-Soo at NYFF is like saying "Woody Allen is filming an untitled new project this year"... it's always true so you will always be prophetic.

The results of the NYFF lineup are helpful when planning your Toronto festival because many of the titles overlap. If it's showing at NYFF I try to avoid it in Toronto knowing I can see it in just two weeks time. But in some cases the need to shove something in your eyeballs will be too great to wait. 

How many of the foreign titles after the jump will be Oscar submissions this season? I'm guessing at least a few with the most likely being Sweden's The Square and Norway's Thelma. Other possibilities are Argentina's Zama (though Argentina often has several options), Finland's The Other Side of Hope (Finland's sole nomination comes from this director) and Poland's Spoor (two of Agnieszka Holland's previous movies have received an Oscar nomination, Europa Europa in screenplay and In Darkness for foreign language film).

Letterman to Bring "In-Depth Conversations" to Netflix

David Letterman has spent enough time growing his beard and is set to return to screens. Letterman is to host a six-show season on Netflix, which will be “in-depth conversations with extraordinary people, and in-the-field segments expressing his curiosity and humor.”

YNMS: Loving Vincent

Tim here. The official trailer for the upcoming animated feature Loving Vincent came out yesterday, just a couple of months after the long-delayed film picked up the Audience Award at this June's Annency International Animated Film Festival. We first heard about Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman's biopic of painter Vincent Van Gogh back in 2015, but the labor-intensive production missed a hoped-for 2016 release. Here, then, are the results of that labor.

It almost seems silly to run this through the Yes, No, Maybe So filter, because honestly, I've been a firm and immobile YES for a year and a half now. Some of the dialogue and cast choices push me in a bit of a Maybe So direction (when Chris O'Dowd speaks, all I can think is "hey, it's Chris O'Dowd as a voice actor!"), but I know that I'll be there Day 1, whenever Day 1 turns out to be here in the Midwest (it's September 22 in New York, September 29 in Los Angeles, and the rest of the country starts rolling out October 6).
