Beauty vs Beast: Bombing The Globes
JA from MNPP here again, keeping the Golden Globes afterglow going with this week's double-edition of our weekly "Beauty vs Beast" poll. Looking for a communal villain at an awards show can be rough - one person's beastly Matthew McConaughey or nightmarish Alejandro González Iñárritu will be inexplicably loved by others (quite deranged folks, I'm convinced). But then there are the "Ooof" moments, when something lands with a quite resounding thud, and those are the times that well, those are what we'll most likely remember one two and ten years from now. Here are two of last night's "Ooof" moments. Which side do you fall down on?
I have my own opinions (read this tweet) as to what's going on with Jeremy Renner, who was all kinds of messy from the moment he hit the stage, but anybody who can make a long avowed J-Loather like me feel a pang of sympathy for her is sure accomplishing... something. On the other hand... the globes, they were definitely golden? As a statement of fact it's not false, exactly. Okay I'm stretching.
Next up...
That picture will never not crack me up. Personally I was down with Margaret Cho's North Korean schtick; what pushed it over the edge for me was the banality of her offered opinions, like the category mis-placement of Orange is the New Black. But I gather not everyone took to it so kindly! Meryl Streep, for instance, seemed genuinely mortified being roped into the routine. That said I don't know if you've heard this but Meryl Streep is considered a fine actress -- her horror might've been a ruse. A terribly terribly convincing ruse. (Maybe she'll win an Emmy for the performance next year?)
You've got one week to make your opinions heard; hit the comments and draw your battle lines. And yes, one week from now we'll know the Oscar nominations and the Golden Globes will be but a foggy hangover feeling; tis the nature of the awards beast.
PREVIOUSLY Last week's poll tackled Annie Hall in honor of Diane Keaton's birthday, and she easily la-di-da'd her way to a triumph, taking over 80% of the vote! Poor Alvy, this is gonna keep him in therapy for... yeah he's never getting out of therapy. Said brookesboy:
"I think some people think Keaton is getting by on charm in this role, but it's so much more than that. The seeming effortlessness in this performance is what makes it so special and enduring."

I'm voting against trend on both of these (at this early moment). I'm going with Renner. Everything about JLo was a train wreck last night--dress, hair, makeup, tan, champagne corks.......she was asking for a comment like that. (I agree with your quote too.)
I liked the Cho bit, but thought it too timid. But, I thought Streep was too obvious in her acting scared. Would have worked better if she had grabbed the moment, hugged Cho and scared the North Korean with kindness.
Jeremy was a mess but if you're going to wear a dress that puts your business that prominently on display when you're presenting an award at the Golden Globes well you shouldn't be surprised when comment is made.
This is all hype for Lopez's comeback movie which opens in 2 weeks.
@joel6...That reasoning is a slippery slope to the "She was asking for it" hypothesis that has plagued our culture for way too long. Jussayin.
She was keeping us abreast of the awards.
Nothing will ever top J.Lo's and Cameron (happy nuptials!) Diaz's choregraphed, over-the-shoulder move at the 2012 Oscars.
I guess those three overexposed boobs J Lo and Jeremy are jostling AHS: Freak Show's Angela Bassett for the spotlight!
Margaret Cho was terribly unfunny to me. The jokes were just bad and I do like her.
This is the first time I heard about Renner being gay, though. Where did this rumor come from?
I do not know Jeremy Renner's sexual orientation. Gay rumors have been circulating for years now. I think Renner is quite handsome and he's a terrific actor.
I'm team J. Lo because it seemed Renner was overcompensating. A mess. These "J. Lo was asking for it" comments are horrendous.
Everything about Jennifer Lopez's outfit was vulgar--we almost saw her cooter, too. No need to get upset over a (very mild) comment.
I'll take Margaret Cho over Meryl Streep any day of the week.
I think Renner's comment was a fairly low-key tease -- much more low-key than j-Lo herself. And hey, if she's not upset, why should we be?
mickey - I agree with you. Nowadays everybody gets offended on behalf of someone else, when that someone couldn't care less.
The slut-shaming brigade is out in full force tonight. Maybe it has less to do with people being offended and more to do with people using the same, tired, disgusting line of thought that shames women for their bodies and (any hint of) sexuality.
What is she wearing that is SO scandalous? I thought she looked pretty great, especially compared to that pug-faced, human disaster, Jeremy Renner.
Jeremy Renner was a drunken pig last next. Team J-Lo.
I think everything was a put-on between Meryl Streep and Margaret Cho. Noticed that even Benedict Cumberbatch was in on that "surprise" photobomb bit. He changed up from his black suit coat to black suit coat just so he could be noticed in the background. Meryl knew beforehand exactly what was going to happen there. Michael Keaton just happened to have his phone ready to take a fake pic? Team Cho.
^^^ black suit coat to white suit coat sorry

Excuse me. There's a consequence to everything. Jennifer Lopez can wear whatever she chooses. That does not free her from others and their remarks.
Jeremy Renner is just gross all-around. The only reason he exists these days is to be the most disposable person in seemingly every franchise.
I thought the Cho bit was hilarious. As Lionel said, I'm sure it was planned and Meryl was acting. She is always game for anything at awards shows.
Cho's uniform was most related to Venezuela, for the matter. A way to link a democracy (Venezuela) to a dictatorship? Talk about manipulation... sigh.
The fact that someone can actually say something like "I'm going with Renner. Everything about JLo was a train wreck last night--dress, hair, makeup, tan, champagne corks.......she was asking for a comment like that." just shows the general mindset of society and how misogynistic it is, when in my opinion, J.Lo looked way better than Renner who look washed up. AND just because her cleavage was saying hi to the room never gives someone the right to make a objectifying comment like that.
Also, on the North Korea front, I find every joke about it just terribly ignorant. Stop making fun of this nation and their dictator. These people are suffering and we make jokes about it. No. If you want to bring change, make a movie telling the stories of these people and how their government stifles them. Continuing to make fun of their country because of some crappy D-grade movie we made is just selfish and only showcases America's privilege. We aren't the victims, North Koreans are.
The only good North Korea jokes were when they said the controversy tricked us all into thinking we actually wanted to see The Interview. And something about North Korea's response to the film not being the worst review it got. Everything past that was like Hollywood just purposely trying to piss off North Korea.
Oh, but I will say her talking about Orange is the New Black and stuff at the end made me laugh, but it still wasn't enough to make up for it.
Excuse me. There's a consequence to everything. Jennifer Lopez can wear whatever she chooses. That does not free her from others and their remarks.
You're right. And when you make slut-shaming, misogynistic comments don't be so shocked and appalled when people call you out for being a sexist ass.
@Lionel, Cumberbatch didn't have a wardrobe change. He simply had taken his jacket off (i.e., he photobombed in his white shirt).
Regarding the 'slutshaming' and 'she was asking for it' comments, it was just a cheeky comment. Have some sense of humor, people! (Like JLo herself demonstrated)
Renner only said aloud what people have said/thought about J. Lo plenty of times, and to me it seemed more like friendly joking than anything lecherous, BUT maybe national TV was not the place to make such a remark.
Margaret Cho was HILARIOUS and I for one would be THRILLED if she hosted next year. I think she needed to keep the "criticisms" light in order for the bit to play at all, but despite their obviousness I still laughed at her delivery. Even just the sight of her sitting there holding the "Movies WOW!" magazine provided my biggest laugh of the night.
JLO knew exactly what she was doing when she wore that dress- she still a stunning looking woman and if you have it flaunt it. The Renner joke seemed lame- and poor Jeremy should just clean up his messy personal life- dragging a child into it is just plain wrong
just because her cleavage was saying hi to the room never gives someone the right to make a objectifying comment like that
Never my natural ass. She made a choice and what happened on the stage and afterwards on social media were the consequences. This attention is exactly what she wanted for the sake of feeling relevant again. If her new movie for Universal is a success we're stuck with the resurgence of Jennifer Lopez for the foreseeable.

I definitely hate women. Hence my pro-biological women stance when it comes to the transgender issue. Or my cheering leading for character actresses over soulless tarts with questionable talent that the men running the patriarchal white supremacy known as Hollywood is currently screwing or wish they could.
Rahul - I agree with you. When I saw the picture of J-Lo on the Red Carpet I thought she looked absolutely amazing and totally beautiful. Women should be able to wear whatever they want, and Jeremy probably shouldn't have said anything.
However if J-Lo was upset about it and asked Jeremy to apologise afterwards, then I could see what people are so upset about, but she just laughed it off.
Slut shaming? He made a horny comment about her awesome boobs. He didn't say "you are asking to be raped in that ho dress" Was his joke out of line and sexist? Sure. But I don't think it should be taken THAT seriously. What would your reactions be if J-Lo had replied with "So did you. Those pants are tight, Jeremy"? Would that be mutual slut shaming? lol
okay, my mistake about Cumberbatch. But everything was very planned and thought-out before hand regardless there.

I don't think there's much shame in Hollywood's game!
I definitely hate women.
At least you admitted it. I don't need your minority checklist of reasons why making sexist comments precludes you from being called a sexist. Let me guess, you got some black friends and gay friends too? Your argument is tired and your viewpoint is old guard. It's 2015 not 1952.
And of course J. Lo would take it in stride - if a woman was to call out that kind of behavior publicly, she'd almost immediately be shamed for embarrassing a man like that. No one would make a joke about Renner's small dick because then all the MRAs (like 3rtful) would come out and call her a bitch and a cunt and that'll be that. It's not hard to see the latent misogyny in every aspect of our society ESPECIALLY in the entertainment industry. It's rather rich (and absurdly shocking) that people think this kind of public objectification is wholly acceptable. It isn't.
Rahul, I do see your point but again I don't think this should be taken so seriously. Why are we giving Renner so much power? And JLo is already being called a bitch and a cunt like most women in Hollywood. I think she would have been celebrated by a lot of people had she replied back at Renner with a joke along the lines of "Look at the prompter, Jeremy" or "take a good look 'cause you are not taking either of these globes home with you" Some silly joke like that instead of laughing and seemingly making it okay for him to joke about her tits.
What I believe we've learned about Hollywood this year is that it has a lot of North Korea material, and none of it is particularly funny.
As for Renner, he needs to come out. You don't get to joke with your girlfriends like a member of a similarly-marginalized minority group if you don't cop to being a member of that group. If he were Zachary Quinto, the reaction would have been totally different because there's not a threatening power dynamic there.
It also gives me the creeps that J Lo and Renner have probably never even met before. Imagine saying such a thing to a perfect stranger on national television.
It further gives me the creeps that a joke like that was probably intended to deeper entrench Renner in a closet of masculinity. It's like Kevin Spacey asking a reporter on the red carpet if he could grab her ass. What is it about closet cases that make them such pigs?
That Rahul guy comes off as the most hateful person in this whole debacle, including Renner.
The PC brigade is suffocating even harmless dumb jokes now.
It must be a pin in the ass to be around someone like you, always seeing misogyny and hatred in EVERY fucking thing.
How long till we have a Holocaust for straight men? When will their tongues be cut when they refer to women sexually?
As a longtime Cho fan, I felt it was funny but she could've really "mommed up" that voice a bit more. Her most hilarious North Korea schtick was a few years back with "We don't have nuclear weapons!" "We will use them on you!" "IF we had them..."
