Tuesday Top Ten: Golden Globes Fashion

Jose here. Can it be that the Golden Globes have now out-Oscared the Oscars in terms of incredible fashion? For a few years now, the stars have been saving their boldest looks for the Globes (Emma Stone's incredible pants combo! Felicity Jones' impressive Dior ball gown!) and this year the trend continues, as the stars wore their most idiosyncratic looks to the HFPA's annual open bar.

Top Ten Golden Globe Gowns after the jump

10. Amy Schumer in Prabal Gurung
For some reason comedians seem to like dresses with pockets, so what a joy it is to see A.Schu dressed like a princess in the very first couture gown she seems to be absolutely comfortable in. The slimming black and white scheme, and the effortless hair and makeup make this a true winner.

09. Julianne Moore in Tom Ford
Juli is just bragging by now, isn't she?

08. Amy Adams in Atelier Versace
It seems that winning a few Golden Globes was all Amy Adams needed to unleash her wilder side. Rather than going for severe (what Kate Winslet's style has become), or fussy (too much detail and quirk) she goes for Malibu Barbie in a stunningly sexy Atelier Versace gown. Letting down her auburn tresses and looking like she spent a month tanning in Bali make this absolutely ravishing.

07. Caitriona Balfe in Alexander McQueen
All bow to Claire Fraser! Can we all pretend this is what Rooney Mara wore instead?

06. Jane Fonda in Yves Saint Laurent
Perhaps the most divisive look of the night, most people agree the bottom is perfect, but the top had people joking about cake, bullfighting and more. What's so unique about it, is how much Fonda owns it. On a lesser celebrity, the dress would have owned them. On Miss Fonda, it's a defying piece of couture bliss.

05. Regina King in Krikor Jabotian
Regina King has been doing her couture homework...her look, by up and coming Lebanese designer Jabotian, seems inspired by Marion Cotillard's 2008 Bafta and Oscar dresses! The lovely Josephine Baker wavy hairdo and the smile were the perfect elements to round up her look.

04. Jennifer Lopez in Giambattista Valli
Judging from her expression, not even J.Lo believes how demure she looks. A vision in canary yellow, the Angelina leg is the only thing J.Lo-ish about the look. The rest is classic Hollywood glamour at its best.

03. Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
J.Law is once again paying tribute to herself, this is her third big bold red look, but judging from her original Calvin Klein in 2011, to her 2014 Dior (with the peplum), it's like she's writing a fashion history of the red dress, this time around showcasing something Judy Jetson would kill for.

02. Saoirse Ronan in Yves Saint Laurent
Ronan gets the "most improved" award. After a string of boho-chic playful looks, she has finally stepped out in an outfit worthy of making jaws drop. As discreetly sexy (she wins the award for most tasteful, but sensual, cleavage, unlike other starlets whose side boob was a malfunction waiting to happen) as it is regal, her hand-made, ivory silk dress (created by Hedi Slimane) hits all the right marks. Her clean makeup and delicate Chopard jewels round up this unforgettable moment.

01. Cate Blanchett in Givenchy
Sunday morning. Cate Blanchett, cigarette in mouth, dry martini on her nighstand, grabs her silver telephone dialer. Dozens of dresses lie on the floor...She dials a number. A phone rings in Paris...

Riccardo Tisci: Yes, my Queen?

Cate
: (purrs) you flatterer...(takes a long drag from her cigarette. Like a kitten, Rooney Mara who is sitting nearby, is entranced by the smoke coming out of her mouth) Remember that collection you did in fall 2010?

Riccardo Tisci: Of course! What do you need?

Cate
: This one (She snaps at Rooney, who sends him an image on her iPad)

Riccardo Tisci
: Of course bella, I'll have them take it out of storage and sent to you first thing in the morning.

Cate
: (Laughs) Don't be silly Riccardo, I need it in pink, and I need it tonight (hangs up).

And did you see that dress in motion?

Jane looked regal. Her dress would only work on a select few. I believe she pulled it off.

Jane Fonda looked a little like an IKEA light fixture. And yet, I still liked it.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

La Blanchett dress? I'm debating : is it a lamp or a couch?

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

This list = accurate.

I would pay actual money for more of this Blanchett fanfiction.

January 12, 2016 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

Cate was among the worst dressed imo, one of her rare missteps. I can't believe she was no.1 here.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterchinoiserie

Really do not like Cate's dress, but agree on the rest.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

I was CRAZY about Jane Fonda's dress... in part because it was so different than the usual 'look at my sensaysh body she can and usually does pull off still in her 70s. This just seemed festive somehow. L-O-V-E-D.

I legit laughed out loud reading this fanfic. especially "seeing" rooney mara reduced to lapdog personal assistant.

January 12, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Also Jose is a known Brie Larson hater because obviously she was one of the best dressed but does not show up here.

January 12, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I agree, Nat! Jane was my best-dressed of the whole night. Everything about her was softer than her usual look. She needs to keep whoever did her makeup, too.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

Love Julianne's dress and it's perfect for her.

Your quite right about Jane's dress only working on a select few with the powerful persona to carry it off, you can just see Joan Crawford dominating it as Jane does. I don't care for it very much but Jane's star presence carries it off.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjoel6

Great list except Lamy Adams served BASIC as always. No Brie or Alicia is perfect too. I'd add Queen Taraji.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJows

Can we have a fan fic in which Maria Enders meets Blanchett and thier assistants (Stewart and Mara) take notes?

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Nat: Come on, I don't have such strong feelings about Ms. Larson, so don't give me a reputation or your readers will yell at me. She looked pretty, but eh...

She was doing Cate circa 2007:
http://guestofaguest.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/cate-blanchett.jpg

And a CK style Lupita did better in 2013:
http://i.huffpost.com/gen/1568763/thumbs/o-LUPITA-NYONGO-900.jpg?15

She will have no place among my best dressed until she finds a style her own, like Saoirse finally did <3

Chris: I'll send you my PayPal info.

cal roth: only if it takes place in the train from Snowpiercer with Tilda as the engineer!

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJose

I LOVED FONDA, and I never say that. She and Julianne were my favorites. Also, I think Cate looked kind of terrible. I agree with Tom and Lorenzo, all her looks lately are way too busy (including the hair here).

Other women who looked great included Gina Rodriguez and Laverne Cox (who always does). I liked all the ladies in white, actually. And I loved that Bryce Dallas Howard bought her dress at Neiman's.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Dunst was a vampire seductress, I loved her look, canp without being too camp

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGreg

Love this list. Jose you are right on on everything specially you'd #1. And yes Brie has no business being on a best dressed list.

But JLo is my #2!!! Looks amazing as always.

More fanfic, more Cate, more Jose.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSummer

I first saw Jane Fonda's dress while she was sitting down, and I thought, "WHAT is that thing?!?" But seeing it full-length when she's standing, I get it.

Cate's look = eh, not quite.
Brie: fabulous.
Dunst, Rodriguez, Bloom: well done, ladies.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commentercash

Jose -- sorry you cant dodge this one. I've heard you & Murtada comisserating about everyone's love for Brie on twitter.

i just noticed KIKI is missing. NOOOooooooooooooo

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

Hum, Rooney's dress was better than Cate's dress. Cate's reminded me of those weird lamps that have bangs or something. And the color pink... burp.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLeelah

Nat: I mentioned I didn't "get" the love for her on Twitter once. I believe she's a very bland, forgettable actress, true. But from that to "hate", it's quite the stretch, sir.

There are many other women who I don't think are good actresses, but are incredible dressers like J.Lo, January Jones, Zoe Saldana, Emilia Clarke, Fan Bingbing, Elizabeth Banks, Paz Vega, Diane Kruger even, and they're usually in my lists. So I resent being accused of keeping Brie out of a list because I don't like her work. I don't joke with couture.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJose

This was amazing. I'm not down with Cate's dress, but if anyone could wear a dress like that it would be her. Omg I lol'ed so much at the phone call and Rooney being entranced by the smoke. That is totally what happened lol.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLulu

J-Law won the night for me. The dress, which could have seemed too boxy, was sleek and elegant, and her hair and makeup were on point. She looked pristine.

Can we get a remake of Clouds of Sils Maria with Cate and Rooney in the roles Jose has carved for them in this fanfic?

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

LOL at Fonda owning that dress.
She looks like she stuck her head out of a surprise party cake too early and now feels too awkward to go back in.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAmir

Loved Fonda's dress, and the fact that she was elegance personified the whole night.

I'm quoting the Fug Girls, Amy Schumer's hair makes her look like "the lost O'hara sibling"

Loved JLaw's look, Rachel McAdams looked divine, and not Cate's best - but she still gets a pass, "Carte Blanchett" is still in effect.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

I wasn't sure how I felt about Blanchett's dress until that video, it's gorgeous! I also really love that JLo and Fonda didn't go their usual routes this time around, though I'm still mixed on the final result in Fonda's case. Kirsten Dunst also looked great.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

I don't understand the neck of Julianne's dress.

J-Law and Saoirse were my favorites.

If I had a roof tile manufacturing business I would totally hire Jane Fonda for a commercial. As far as I'm concerned she can a wear a potato bag or whatever. I fucking love her.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

J-Law was stunning

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Did anyone else love the way Maggie G. looked in her dress? It could have been a bit too matronly but she pulls it off with real understated grace and a 20s vibe. I really want her in another period drama stat.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterstella

Kirsten Dunst was one of my favs.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Kirsten Dunst.

January 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

Nathaniel - can't believe you are dragging me into the anti-Brie convo. Lol

I would say that while my personal taste / preferances (ie Cate is always my #1) clouds my judement most of the time, Jose is not like that. Nothing comes between Jose and his astute couture critique.

January 13, 2016 | Registered CommenterMurtada Elfadl

Lopez was smoking and she looked even better on TV. Probably my number 1. JLaw's look was not great IMO; the hair throws it all off.

January 13, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

Emmy Rossum was completely knocking it out in that red dress. Her jewelry was enchanting, just regal.
It girl Alicia Vikander could have been more daring or adventurous.

January 13, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMustafa

However I gotta say Vikander's suspender style back was chic.

January 13, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMustafa

Great list except Cate Blanchett looks BASIC.

January 13, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAveStep

all awful except for j-lo. she's flawless here.

January 13, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterauthor

Blanchett's dress was the most interesting, playful and avant-garde of the bunch. It didn't look like one of the many standard template dresses but it still looked classy, and on her effortless - very appropriate for a Globes redcarpet. Reminds me of her previous metallic mesh dress and that yellow beaded lilac dress - which attracted a lot of divided opinions but with hindsight has been mentioned as one of the best redcarpet dresses. She wears couture like nobody does. Honourable mentions to J.Law, Taraji, Zendaya, Saoirse and Alicia. There were some pretty dresses but most were still template traditional, and of course a couple of awful ones. Kate Hudson's one looked like it wants to strangle her and J.Lo's ' leg' made her look a bit too desperate for attention.

January 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterkookee

Amazing post. And to shed some more light. I want you guys to check this out. She will soon be the creator of many in the time to come. http://thetrendin.com/fd-muntaha-al-ajeel-receives-worldwide-recognition/
