Red Carpet Lineup: Best, Boldest, and Most Basic BAFTA Beauties

Nathaniel here since our fashion expert Jose Solis is unavailable to share his red carpet expertise. Argh! Unlike Jose I cannot tell you who these actresses are wearing -- my gawking is strictly actress-focused. But have I ever told you about my favorite "category" on red carpets? It's "Actresses Who Show up in Costumes as Fictional Characters Nobody Has Invented Yet" which is just what Noomi Rapace and Anya Taylor Joy did at this weekend's BAFTAs!

Boldest: Noomi & Anya

What kind of fictional characters are these? Please help me write those character profiles in the comments won't you? More gowns from superstars like Emma Stone, Penélope Cruz, and Nicole Kidman follow after the jump...

Basic: they're not taking big chances but still beautiful

Bryce Dallas Howard and Thandie Newton went for black dresses and though Thandie jazzed hers up with assymetric matching hair... what was BDH really going for? Daisy Ridley opted for decorative panels which are a mystery to these eyes but are also on trend. Amy Adams always looks phenomenal in green but the loose fit will surely prompt pregnancy rumors if it hasn't already. (Or maybe she is pregnant? We don't follow the personal lives closely unless they interfere with our movie-watching such as when Warren Beatty snatched The Bening away from screens for years for child rearing! But if she is congrats to her and her husband. They've been together since 2001, well before she was famous but only got married a couple of years back)

Best Bafta: Kidman, Davis, Stone, Cruz

Best Dressed! Nicole Kidman stunned in a sleek, simple sheath dress with disco ball like top. She really should do this blow out hair more often. Gorgeous. Viola Davis almost never alters the shapes of her dresses... they're always strapless and busty but her rainbow friendly bold color choices are where she plays and since she looks sensational in every color, it works. Emma Stone opted for something like genie pants under a dress and Penelope Cruz went disco era and it really does feel like the 70s are back in many clothing trends.

Bafta Bold! Harris, Balfe, Williams, and Huppert

More bold choices from Naomie Harris, Caitriona Balfe, and Michelle Williams. And it's exciting to see Isabelle Huppert try something other than her preferred black jacket looks.

P.S. With all the patchwork, embroidery, grandmother busy textiles, and vaguely slavic anti-fashion fashion at awards show lately ... it almost feels like the style icon this season is our beloved Katya Zamolodchikova, doesn't it? Or am I reaching? Or am I reaching solely as an excuse to assure you that I still think about Katya basically every day of my life since she first appeared on our screens and I'm counting down the days until the next season of RuPaul's Drag Race?

What was your favorite gown at the BAFTAs this year and who do you think is saving their best gown for the Oscars?

I do not know fashion ! I just see what I like.

Probably Kidman. The rest are pretty bad IMO!

Really liked Stone's look. The pants threw me off for a second, but it has a Middle Eastern feel that she's weirdly pulling off.

Kidman is MVP here though. So sleek and perfect. I have to say though that Adams is probably my Worst Dressed. From the front it looks harmless enough, but if you see the dress from the back it's just... terribly saggy and awful.

lol you're reaching, but I love you for finding a way to work Katya in.

For that sentence, I now demand an article: "I still think about Katya basically every day of my life since she first appeared on our screens"

Re: fictional character profiles, Noomi is the wife of an oil baron who is sleeping with her stepson and writing a one-woman musical about the affair, the script for which the oil baron discovers one night in his study. Anya is an alien priestess who has just delicately landed on the snowdrifts of Antarctica, startling a group of research scientists; she ignores their shock as she promptly informs them that they have only a few days to save the planet--with her help, of course.

They maybe could be sisters but that is not a picture of Hall. That is Balfe of Outlander fame.

Amy's head looked GREAT but that dress (other than the colour) does her no favors. Nic looks nice and her hair is a nice change because it's been looking a bit...overworked..recently. I'd probably give my best dressed to Daisy because that's a particularly interesting look going on there.

And I can't understand how so many celebs are wearing Gucci these days since Gucci is stuck in some tacky 60's-70's time rut. Literally the only people I can think of who has pulled this new Gucci off is Nic in that parrot dress and Dakota Johnson who looks like she's trying to get an ad campaign with them. For me, Gucci is the new Dior (at least when Raf Simons was there) with distinctive fugly.

I want Kidman and Cruz to work with David O. Russell in American Hustle 2!!!!!!!!

Nicole looked STUNNING. Like, in the audience of the BAFTAs she looked absolutely radiant and gorgeous, and not that it means anything, but she looked about ten years younger tbh. She looked great.

Noomi as Mata-Hari and Anya as a Russian princess.

Love Huppert. Is she wearing Armani?

Since she's totally winning, I hope Viola is saving her best dress for the Oscars. Yellow, Blue, White... I assume she'll wear red.

I am getting flames on the side of my face from Noomi Rapace's Madeleine Kahn look.

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMARKGORDONUK

Noomi Rapace came straight from a performance of Pal Joey where she was playing Vera Simpson. There was no time to change, she was late.

Anya Taylor Joy was auditioning to join the fanning sisters in a whimsical pop power trio playing 70s covers.

Is that Rebecca Hall or Caitriona Balfe??

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSquasher88

I've been thinking the same thing about Katya and fashion! Also, I've been watching The Americans and overdosing on political news. That bitch was Red before any of us saw it coming.

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterHayden

sorry everyone about Caitriona -- duh! of course that's her. I blame Zimbio who labelled Balfe's pictures Hall !!!

I think Emily Blunt is the best dressed at the BAFTA this year.

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRic

Yeah, Viola looked great as usual (always tasteful) but Emily Blunt looked amazing! I'm sad she isn't featured here.

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

NICOLE IS JUST STUNNING! Wow she should put on this kinda look more often
And Cruz too. I need to see her in great movies again now.
Noomi looks like Rossy De Palma's younger sister.

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Nicole's wig and extensive plastic surgery are A+. Viola looks great. The fit on Isabelle Huppert is not good.

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAnabelle

Noomi is a community theatre version of Cruella.
Anna is a community theatre version of Anastasia.

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTom

Nicole's plastic surgery looks plastic!

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMax

Wowza! Emily Blunt does indeed look stunning! Thanks for the heads up!

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commentershawshank

Is that true she came from a theatre performance in character? THAT is an actress! Never afraid

February 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJono

I just watched a clip of Nicole on GMA and her face is jacked. Does not look good up close.
