Heads up. We've begun the mid October overhaul of the charts. All four acting charts are updated with the biggest shakeups coming to Best Actor with Christian Bale and Clint Eastwood suddenly both roaring buzz-wise. Please take a look and comment. AND THIS JUST IN 10/15: Olivia Colman will be campaigning as lead for The Favourite with Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz officially "supporting" for the tragicomic triangular relationship. The charts have been updated to reflect the switch in presumed campaigns. Mostly this means Supporting Actress has no frontrunner... which is exciting.

I would be delighted if Hawke gets in for the best performance of the year (Schrader for screenplay as well). I hope the critics come through for him.
I can't imagine seeing a better female performance this year than Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Kindergarten Teacher. She was better than her Israeli counterpart in the original (although the original is a slightly better film). By the way, I believe Netflix released this not A24.
Ethan Hawke has to be nominated ...
I'm also hoping that Toni Collette and Alex Wolff can join the conversation. Alex is still my fav supporting actor performance this year. Toni is second behind Glenn Close.
Is Ben Foster going lead or supporting? If he's going supporting I think he has a chance. I hope so anyway.
With True Detective season 3 set to be airing during awards season, could Mahershala Ali pull a Christoph Waltz and win a really quick second supporting Oscar?
Steve-if he did, he'd join Walter Brennan as the only person to win first and second acting Oscar trophies with only one year break in-between them. Hard to find two actors as divergent as Mahershala Ali and Walter Brennan.
call me crazy but I don't think the Glenn Close nomination is locked up at all. in fact, I have a hard time calling anything a lock in October, but the ASIB noms make sense. I maintain that no one has seen or cares about the Wife. She's fine in it. The movie's less than fine. She may be able to squeeze in the final five based off goodwill alone but a win feels resolutely out of the question
also, think Collette is being severely underestimated. Hereditary did huge numbers and I fully expect her to take down a plethora of critics prizes. And it's getting increasingly difficult to predict what exactly is oscar's type these days. The old thought-process about what they do and don't like seems to hold less water now.
I'm kind of baffled that Kiki Layne is now a lovable longshot - I saw Beale Street last night and she is easily the best thing about the film (sorry, Regina King). At the very least, I think she has a better shot at a nomination than Collette/Gyllenhaal/Swank.
Good call on Robert Forster - I hear he's incredible, plus he's managed to make the Oscar cut before w/o much precursors love.
Allen -- really? I thought Kiki Layne was the weak link of that film. I just didn't get much from her performance but loved the rest of the cast.
c -- okay. here's the thing. even if i'm wrong about Glenn Close's nomination people really need to quit with this 'no one has seen it or cares' business. THAT IS FALSE. She got rave reviews and the movie has been a consistent performer at arthouses for two entire months and has a gross that's basically in the Winters Bone zone... (i.e. plenty successful enough for oscar campaigns). plus the movie appeals to the older demographic and was the first screener to go out. There's plentiful reasons to think she's getting nominated. and while we all have our different opinions on each performance the consensus is not with you that she's merely "fine" in it. Mine was far from the only rave for her work.
According to Kris Tapley on Twitter, Coleman is going lead. Can both her and Emma Stone get nominated for The Favourite in the lead category?
I know you just updated them but we've got official confirmation Colman is going lead. Stone remains the question mark now. Which I think clears the way for a Regina King win!

Rod -- it would be fraud if he did but that has rarely stopped people.
According to Feinberg Hedges is running lead for both of his movies this year. So at least there's that.
The disgrace crown of worst category fraud of the year goes to Emma Stone and Ali.

I agree it's a strange choice, given that her chances of winning in lead are significantly smaller. But maybe it's the right choice in the long run, as she will give Glenn and Gaga a run for their money in lead, and ultimately, maybe a lead actress nomination (and the billing that comes with it) will be more valuable for her moving forward than a supporting actress trophy. She knows what she's doing. In any case, the whole thing feels very Mary Tyler Moore circa 1980.
Also with Colman out of the way I think Amy is COMING for that supporting trophy.
Nathaniel - to each his own, I suppose! Jenkins was on-site alongside Layne ahead of the screening, and when answering a question about casting Layne, he said that he was initially struck by how she captured Tish's essence of "experiencing" everything for the first time. I think that resonated with me and definitely rang true while I was watching her in the film - I thought she was very ethereal.
I am LOVING this awards season so far! Actor and Actress having so many people who could make that 5. Both supporting cats have none yet. I'm feeling very excited!
Well, Close better have a monumental campaign with Gaga going Drama at the Globes and Colman going lead. I now think it’s between the latter two. This two curveballs have really upset Glenn’s chances.
Will be sad if Foy gets in over Weisz. Have been dying for another Weisz nom and Foy's work in First Man felt really... I don't know, awkward or something. She seemed to be acting in a different movie. I wouldn't call her the weak link by any means, she was trying, but the trying was too visible, imo.
Then again, I've never seen the Crown and don't have any sense of her acting otherwise and totally see how her popularity could launch her into the lead.
Is anyone else thinking Adams winning for playing Lynne Cheney is a bit... nuts? We need to see the film but as much as I love Adams, I can't imagine cheering her on as this particular character. My thought is this is Regina King's to lose, because Foy/Stone/Weisz won't beat her and Yeoh/Adams/Kidman are probably fighting for that last slot, at best.
Also Nathaniel, totally agree re: Hawke. I'm shocked anyone's not convinced it could happen. I agree with all of your points, plus the performance is arguably his best (although to me, Boyhood was a career summation kinda deal and was movingly reflective of both his on- and off-screen personas).
The movie itself was one of the most striking and unique to come out so far this year, and a lot of people saw and talked about it. It's also been a weird year for movies with a lot of divisive films, but First Reformed is, to me, one of the few to have a general consensus regarding its quality. I feel like my Oscar predix skillz are rusty these days (I thought Villeneuve was going to get a nod for Director last year lolz), but I will be completely shocked if First Reformed doesn't get an Actor or Screenplay nom.
OMG!! Queen Olivia is really goin Lead!! This is such a Sophie's Choice now! I so wanna see both Close n Colman winning!
Guess now w Gaga vacating the comedy/musical cat, Colman more or less has the Golden Globe in her bag, her only visible competition now is Blunt in Mary Poppins, but I suspect HFPA r gonna go big on The Favourite. They never pass a chance to honour a Royal if the reviews r smashing!
Category fraud or not, Fox Searchlight putting Colman in lead is the opposite of common sense, but this makes Regina King the frontrunner so I’m not gonna be the one to tell them otherwise. But seriously, I thought all bets were off after the Alicia Vikander win in 2015.
Loving It, seem to be Close VS Gaga and Colman VS Blunt at the Golden Globe, now who will take the fifth slot at the Best Actress Oscar nomination that I want to know. After that there must be like ten more names that equally deserve to be the last five too. I mean if the last five is Melissa McCarthy, Viola Davis, Yalitza Aparicio, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts, it is still a very strong lineup. (and we're still waiting for Saoirse, Felicity and Emily.) Best Actress this year is really too much!
Eli -- it's not category fraud though... it really is a three hander movie. There are scenes with each possible combo of that trio... and the movie never loses focus on them. The only arguable "supporting" is Weisz (I wouldn't object to that classification even though i'm leaning all three are leads) but that's only because she has less screen time than the other two and is absent for a short portion of the picture.
Claran -- i suspect they will go big on The Favourite too BUT there is one thing giving me pause: They really love Emily Blunt. She's already been nominated 5 times there (unlike 0 for Oscar)

Nat - Well, K Hepburn was nom 8 times at Golden Globes n they nev give it to her, not even Long Day's Journey into Night or The Lion in Winter, her two strongest case.

Glenn Close very much deserves at least to be nominated for The Wife. She's really great in it.

Just seen destroyer and my word Nicole Kidman is absolutely astonishing in it , now if close loses and Kidman doesn’t get nominated I won’t abandon cinema Just award shows as rightly pointed out earlier.
