Name 5 things you're currently obsessing over!

Apologies for the sparse posting the past couple of days we've been buried in screenings & events and the like. I'm currently obsessing about five things...

1) How wrong I was assuming the character of Amy could not be the MVP of any iteration of Little Women (hi, Florence!) so our SAG screening guest was correct.

2) Potential trickery in the Original / Adapted screenplay placements with Ford v Ferrari attempting a Gangs of New York 'no, we're an original! a category in which they have virtually no chance of scoring... (so what is the campaign reasoning? Bizarre) and The Two Popes attempting a 'never mind that play the screenwriter wrote, we're an original)

3) TODD PHILLIPS DIRECTING STYLE ON JOKER WHICH IS THE MOVIE EQUIVALENT OF CAPS LOCK FOR AN ENTIRE DOCUMENT.

4) How we're seeing Glenn Close on the campaign trail tonight stumping for Jonathan Pryce in The Two Popes and how lovely that is that she is undeterred by her own horrible recent loss and right back out there.

5) We've updated Picture / Director / Screenplay / Actor and Supporting Actor Oscar charts but we know you're just waiting for the ladies and we'll do them tomorrow!

Re #4 - Jonathon Pryce was fantastic in The Wife. He should have been Oscar nom'd last year for Supporting Actor, IMO. Would you expect anything less from Glenn Close? She's the definition of a class act.

4) Pryce was not supporting in The Wife. It'd be category fraud.

Close knows she can't look bitter because she's so winning next time

So excited to see Little Women and especially Pugh, after all the raves. Interested to see if she moves up your charts!

1: Hazbin Hotel being SO GOOD.
2: The newest YouTube nightmare.
3: Olivia Colman in The Crown S3. Not really a continuation of Foy, but really good in her own right.
4: BoJack's almost over. Sigh. Still, better to die a hero and all that.
5: Netflix's stranglehold over Oscar 2019. This is just...a lot...all at once.

I'm mostly excited about Helena Bonham Carter being on the rise again with her performance in the Crown. It felt like she was trapped in the same role for a while (e.g., all the burton films, harry potter, etc.), so it's good to see her fully emerge from that and reclaim her place as one of the top British actresses working today.

1. A fervent wish that Mary Kay Place (Diane) will win NYFCC Best Actress in early December and jump start her Oscar campaign.

2. Oscar winner Chris Cooper effectively stealing A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

3. The amazing production design in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It truly transported me back to LA in 1969. It was exactly how I remember it.

4. The dearth of enthusiasm for Maiden, my favorite documentary this year.

5. Pain and Glory, a true masterpiece of cinema.

November 22, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJames

1. Please, movie gods, is there any chance Taron can get in Best Actor with this crowded field?

2. Can Toni Collette salve her Hereditary robbery with a Supporting Actress nom for Knives Out?

3. Please let Annette Bening get in for The Report, and give her a win soon because, well, the Glenn Close thing is not what I want for Annette.

4. Will bad reviews for 21 Bridges stop my future husband Chadwick Boseman from having another hit? Please, no.

5. Is everyone ready for a Beyonce/Taylor showdown Part 2 for Best Original Song?

PS Nathaniel, please do not take Annette off your predictions. Hugs. bb

I'm glad you admitted you were wrong about Pugh, but I think you are still underestimating Little Women and Greta! All of this space in the Adapted category means that she just might win the Oscar this year, especially since it seems as though she's truly made a new version of a familiar story.

1. Equestria Girls Rainbow Dash

2. The Legend of the Three Caballeros on Disney+

After seeing the Irishman, I'm absolutely impressed by Joe Pesci, something I never never ever would have expected.

November 22, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterken s.

Joe: I mean, I DO think she should have gotten (should get? Please?) at least one Oscar nomination for that branch of her career.

November 22, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

1. Elizabeth Taylor
2. Tennessee Williams
3. Lily Aldridge
4. Chanel
5. Biologique Recherche skincare

@Volvagia
I agree with you. It could have been delicious to have her nominated for an Oscar for SWEENEY TODD, but 2007 was such a great year for Best Actress imo. Just remember Knightley got snubbed for ATONEMENT

In no particular order:

1. En Vogue
2. "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" from Hello, Dolly!
3. Eating the rich
4. My new cap-toe lace-up boots from Florsheim
5. Autumn

Your #3 made me laugh out loud.

I'm not big on filling in a chorus of a "Please no not that guy" brigade, but where the film disappoints is in his direction. I think it comes off as a hack job.

November 22, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

1) Michael Fassbender.
2) Jennifer Lopez winning Supporting Actress Academy Award.
3) Rock Hudson's autobiographical book co-written by Sara Davidson, Rock Hudson - His History. A must-read.
4) Easy Living, 1937's comedy with Jean Arthur and Ray Milland, a wacky funny version of Great Depression Era Cinderella - have just seen it.
5) Xmas is coming.

1. I'm going to rewatch Phantom Thread this evening. So excited.
2. Julianne Moore deserved a Spirit nod for her sublime work in Gloria Bell. Heartfelt, subtle, nuanced, simply beautiful.
3. Deborah Kerr and The Innocents.
4. I miss Glenn Close. I want her back on the big screen.
5. Nathaniel, did you like Michelle in Maleficent Mistress of Evil?

November 22, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFerdi

1. Joe Pesci in The Irishman. (ken s. - I wasn't surprised he was good but I was surprised he was this fantastic!)
2. Timothée Chalamet coming to the London stage in 2020.
3. Awkwafina's performance in The Farewell. I just can't shake it off. I hope she gets a lot of awards attention.
4. How well with Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood do in the Oscar nominations? It deserves to figure strongly.
5. Boney M's song El Lute. Not one I was familiar with, and I heard it in a shop.and it has made my week!

You're gonna have to clarify that "Joker" comment. What does that even mean? That it's loud? Unsubtle? Over-the-top? Not having seen any of his prior films, I actually found Phillips' direction remarkably nimble, with an elegant control over rhythm and tone. Hardly anything I'd equate with CAPS LOCK.

01- Baby Yoda! I need a Baby Yoda!
02- Cats! The movie! Good or bad, I'll see. I bet $ 80 with a friend, Jay, that it's gonna be a hit over 80 m in the US box office. He thinks it'll be a disastrous failure. Anyway, the reviews won't help.
03- Days of Our Lives renewed !!!!! Renewed !!!!
04- Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell.
Audrey Hepburn and her very, very old (wonderful, of course) romantic partners.

Edward L -

I guess I misspoke somewhat. I've enjoyed a lot of Joe Pesci's performances in the past - for example, he's such a hoot in My Cousin Vinny. I was just unprepared for such a subtle and restrained, yet powerful, performance in The Irishman. He's just so good at conveying the act of listening and conveying the thinking his character is doing while he takes in what others are saying. I think it's the performance of the year.

November 22, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterken s.

Jonathan -- we obviously had vastly dissimilar experiences with the movie. To me it was ALL climax, no build. It starts at 11 and just stays there only adds more and more violence to the mix. Every scene is so heavy so "nimble" is about the last word I'd use. To me it's the most self-impressed movie of the year. I found it exhausting even though I recognizable some fine crafstmanship (costumes, production design, acting)

1. ScarJo turns 35 today... It's funny how the girl from THE HORSE WHISPERER became a movie superstar (I believe it's because she made such a brilliant transition to adult roles). And now it's her Oscar time...
2. Indie Spirit Awards WAVES snub... I can swear it was a movie that fits these awards perfectly
3. Shia LaBeouf comeback with THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON and HONEY BOY (a shame male acting races are bloodbaths this year, maybe he gets a Screenplay nod)
4. Is THE IRISHMAN de-aging to be considered Makeup or Visual Effects?
5. Re-watched LA REINE MARGOT: not sure I want a remake, but this story should be acknowledged by younger generations and Hollywood... I can think of some actresses for the part (and don't say someone is too old, because Adjani was 39 at the time and looked better than most of 20 years old girls)

Volvagia, your Netflix comment reminded me - I saw The Irishman in a theater, and when Netflix came on the screen, a woman behind me yelled, "Mixed feelings!" The crowd laughed nervously. I wonder if they're going to get slammed by some of the people they didn't promote enough thanks to their full plate, like Eddie Murphy.

I do think it may be telling that Woodard got in over Erivo and Awkwafina at the Spirits. It bums me out that both Woodard and Awkwafina seem unlikely to get in, but here we are.

November 22, 2019 | Unregistered Commentereurocheese

ken s.: I totally agree with you about Pesci's qualities in The Irishman. He conveys so much with so little overt effort. I haven't seen better work onscreen this year.

Nathaniel: I too felt as though Joker was caps lock filmmaking. In fact, I found the film both over the top and...dull. Excellent cinematography, though - capturing the beauty and the grime of the urban environment. But that's its best quality.
