Let's do Globe Predictions! Why not, right?
You guys. We know we're not supposed to take them seriously and people get offended when anyone dares to admit that they totally love them. BUT the Golden Globes are enjoyable -- it's a fact. So this year we pour one out for the continually scandal-laden problematic HFPA and what might have been in a non-pandemic-cursed world. The Globes shindig is easily one of the best showbiz nites of each year but it can't possibly hold its usual excitements without all those stars of screen and television milling around drunk both during and inbetween commercial breaks. We wish Amy Poehler and Tina Fey luck at trying to make it lively without a crowd to laugh along with them. It won't be the same without the open bar (on television that is. We're stocking ours up for sad pandemic home viewing)
Christopher already handled the TV predictions so it's my turn for the movies. After the jump, foolish predictions in all categories for this Sunday night's virtual ceremony...
PICTURE, DRAMA
- The Father
- Mank
- Nomadland
- Promising Young Woman
- Trial of the Chicago 7
will win: We think this is going to The Trial of The Chicago 7 because... well, the tide appears to be turning in its favor and it is dull enough to perfectly suit this strange waiting-around season when everyone just wants to move on to next year, presumably vaccinated and sans masks. (If you'd like to look at other predictions, the Gurus of Gold chart is also up. I am off consensus on a few things.)
might win: It's worth noting that in the last super sloppy messy Globes year --messy on the Kate Hudson/Music level we mean, so we're talking The Tourist year of 2010/2011 -- the Globes actually exhibited good taste in their winners list, opting for The Social Network over The King's Speech and The Kids Are All Right over The Tourist and Alice in Wonderland and Red (note: do not speak ill of Burlesque in our presence) so it's very possible the HFPA will recover some taste and go with Nomadland instead.
PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
- Borat
- Hamilton
- Music
- Palm Springs
- The Prom
will win: Going out a limb here since Hamilton would be soooo much like the HFPA to say that they're going to go with Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. It brings some respectable irreverence to the proceedings and Sacha Baron Cohen is definitely having a big year. We thought before the nominations that The Prom had a great shot at winning but the absence of Streep in Best Actress, Comedy suggests they didn't love it but nominated it reflexively... because musical.
might win: Hamilton which would be very much like the Globes, both because they don't obsess over influencing or predicting the Oscar vote the way so many groups do (it's not just the Critics Choice!)
should win: Palm Springs obviously. The best romantic comedy in years.
ACTRESS DRAMA
- Viola Davis, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
- Andra Day, United States vs Billie Holliday
- Vanessa Kirby, Pieces of a Woman
- Frances McDormand, Nomadland
- Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman
will win: This is actually a tough call. Viola Davis' film likely lacks support (given the absence in Picture) and Andra Day and Vanessa Kirby won't be able to benefit from the Globes occassional surprise preference for fast rising stars without the usual hubbub or parties and red carpets and televised excitement. So we think it's a complete toss up between Frances and Carey. We're going to guess Carey Mulligan.
might win: Frances McDormand. It'll be close. Remember that time there was a three-way tie?
ACTRESS, MUSICAL/COMEDY
- Maria Bakalova, Subsequent Moviefilm
- Kate Hudson, Music
- Michelle Pfeiffer, French Exit
- Rosamund Pike, I Care A Lot
- Anya Taylor-Joy, Emma.
will win: We think Maria Bakalova is going to ride her season-long strong awards performance to a win here.
might win: The Globes used to REALLY love Michelle Pfeiffer and she's not a schmoozer so they loved her on her stardom and talent. But that was a long time ago and their shocking snub of her in 2002 (for a nothing performance from Cameron Diaz no less) still totally haunts us so maybe they don't love her anymore? But if she wins it won't be a total shock because they were obsessed for six consecutive years from 88-93 and the RePfeiffal has to start somewhere -- why wouldn't the Globes want credit?
ACTOR, DRAMA
- Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal
- Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
- Anthony Hopkins, The Father
- Gary Oldman, Mank
- Tahar Rahim, The Mauritanian
will win: Going out on a limb here and choose Anthony Hopkins in The Father. That nomination in Best Picture Drama was no sure thing and makes us believe they really loved the movie. Plus he's stupendous in it and he's actually never won the Globe despite 8 nominations there (yes, he lost for Silence of the Lambs).
might win: The common wisdom is Chadwick Boseman but we're not sure the HFPA will feel drawn to a posthumous honor given the absence of a live ceremony where that sort of thing would play so beautifully (not to be crass but we believe these things do psychologically affect voters, even if its subconciously) so if it's not Hopkins or Boseman, I'm going to guess the (happy) surprise of Riz Ahmed.
ACTOR, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
- Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
- James Corden, The Prom
- Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton
- Dev Patel, Personal History of David Copperfield
- Andy Samberg, Palm Springs
will win: Sacha Baron Cohen. He's having a career moment.
might win: Anyone really! Lin-Manuel Miranda is the obvious alternate if they want to honor Hamilton BUT because we think Cohn is way out front we want to propose the possible shock of an Andy Samberg win.
SUPPORTING ACTOR
- Sacha Baron Cohen, Trial of the Chicago 7
- Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah
- Jared Leto, The Little Things
- Bill Murray, On the Rocks
- Leslie Odom Jr, One Night in Miami
will win: Yes, ANYTHING is possible as Aaron Taylor Johnson's win announced loudly in the year of Nocturnal Animals. We sense this is a tight race, if only because Sacha Baron Cohen also has an opportunity to be honored elsewhere. And given that it's a tight race we're predicting Leslie Odom Jr as a way to honor both One Night in Miami literally and Hamilton spiritually.
might win: Anyone but since the Globes aren't opposed to double wins it could well be Cohen here, too.
also can we talk about: how annoying it is that they dont have supporting awards for comedy/musical? If you're going to split the leads, split the supporting players too. More stars at your ceremony!
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- Glenn Close, Hillbilly Elegy
- Olivia Colman, The Father
- Jodie Foster, The Mauritanian
- Amanda Seyfried, Mank
- Helena Zengel, News of the World
will win: I see three distinct win possibilities so a tight race. Let's say Amanda Seyfried to give Glenn Close some punditry competition later on Oscar night. Plus Globe voters like David Fincher well enough. (Also it's worth noting that the Globes don't owe Glenn Close anything and will feel no remorse about having stiffed here given the 15 nominations and 3 wins over the years)
might win: Olivia Colman if The Globes want to send a message about The Father.
DIRECTOR
- Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
- David Fincher, Mank
- Regina King, One Night in Miami
- Aaron Sorkin, the Trial of the Chicago 7
- Chloe Zhao, Nomadland
will win: Chloe Zhao. Even if the film loses Best Picture, it's tough to imagine her losing the upcoming Oscars. We think the Globes will want to be part of the coronation, as well as beating the Oscars to "two female director winners over the years" even if it's only by a month's time.
might win: David Fincher. The HFPA likes him more than the Academy does, with 4 noms and 1 win versus the 2 noms and 0 wins at the Oscars.
SCREENPLAY
- Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
- Jack Fincher, Mank
- Aaron Sorkin, Trial of the Chicago 7
- Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton, The Father
- Chloe Zhao, Nomadland
will win: we think Sorkin will breeze to a third Globe win here (he won previously for Social Network and Steve Jobs)
might win: ...unless Best Actress isn't enough to show their enthusiasm for Promising Young Woman and they want to announce a new favourite in Emerald Fennell.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
- Another Round (Denmark)
- La Llorona (Guatemala)
- The Life Ahead (Italy)
- Minari (US)
- Two of Us (France)
will win: Okay, so at the Gurus of Gold I predicted Minari and that's the sensible thing to predict but now I want to change my vote and suggest that they might not like how everyone attacked them about Minari and just go with what would have won had it not been relegated to this category: Denmark's Another Round it is.
might win: But yes, it's probably Minari.
SCORE
- Alexandre Desplat - Midnight Sky
- Ludwig Goransson - Tenet
- James Newton Howard - News of the World
- Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - Mank
- Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste - Soul
will win: The Globes only agree with the eventual Oscar choice about half the time but the Critics Awards have suggested that Soul has literally no competition in anyone's hearts this year. So Reznor and Ross to their second Globe win.... but perhaps Mank instead of Soul if they're feeling contrarian but not really.
might win: Hmmm. News of the World?
ORIGINAL SONG
- "Fight For You" -Judas and the Black Messiah
- "Hear My Voice" -Trial of the Chicago 7
- "Io Si (Seen)" -The Life Ahead
- "Speak Now" -One Night in Miami
- "Tigress & Tweed" - United States vs Billie Holliday
will win: "Speak Now" because why not and the Globes don't mind double dipping. So step right up again, Leslie Odom Jr. Also you're the biggest star in the mix this year (it was kind of a strange year for nominations, Globe wise) in this category as they didn't embrace any mega stars like Taylor Swift or Justin Timberlake or what not.
might win: Literally any of the other four. There aren't any household names like Madonna or Elton John in the mix this year who the Globes might default to for a TV moment so we have no idea what they might embrace. Ony "Tigress & Tweed" didn't make the Oscar finals in this category... but Globe voters really don't care about what Oscar might like in this particular category and often go their own way. So if they really love "Tigress & Tweed" that might be the winner too. You never know.
ANIMATED FEATURE
- The Croods
- Onward
- Over the Moon
- Soul
- Wolfwalkers
will win: Soul primarly because it's also nominated in Score.
might win: Wolfwalkers. Historically the Globes are slightly less beholden to Disney/Pixar than Oscars are so this does have a decent shot at the win.
WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS AND WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF OURS?

Agree with most of these but I’m predicting Colman in Supporting Actress and Actress in a Television Drama going to her costar Emma Corrin.
If Trial of the Chicago 7 wins this thing film twitter is going to come for its head. It's not going to be pretty.
Would the Globes award Cohen for Borat 2 when they already awarded him in the same category for Borat 1? I feel like they won't want to repeat themselves on the film side. I'm holding out hope for Andy Samberg.
Also, I'm tired of people dunking on ATJ's win for Nocturnal Animals. We complain that the same people win all throughout awards season, and then when an awards group decides to go with a surprise choice, they still get dunked on. It discourages awards groups from making bold choices and leads to more rubber stamping of the same winners ceremony after ceremony.
My worthless Predictions(not my favorites; the ones I think will win)
Picture Drama - Mank
Picture Musical or Comedy Palm Springs
Actress Drama - Vanessa Kirby
Actress Musical or Comedy - Anya Taylor-Joy
Actor Drama Anthony Hopkins
Actor Musical or Comedy Andy Samberg
Supporting Actor Daniel Kaluuya
Supporting Actress Amanda Seyfried
Director Chloe Zhao
Screenplay Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton
Foreign Language Filme Another Round (Denmark)
Score Soul
Original Song
"Fight For You" -Judas and the Black Messiah
Animated Fraturei Soul
Is anyone else feeling a late Pfeiffer surge?
Totally agreeing with your predictions.
I am actually keeping an eye on Supporting Actress. I have a feeling it is either Seyfried or Close. Truth to be told. I am rooting for Colman because she was outstanding in The Father. It is actually my favorite movie of the year and I want it to win all its nominations.
I also love Nomadland and I thought I would be bored when I watched it, but wow I was amazed by how great it is.
I’m really hoping for a PALM SPRINGS victory like they did for THE HANGOVER.
I think Nomadland and Sacha Baron Cohen are going to have a good night. Hoping Mank gets shut out. Minari’s win in foreign language is going to be super awkward, but I hope it takes it. Anything to help it get as many nominations as possible at the Oscars. This is just about the only place to read interesting/sane coverage of awards season anymore. Sasha Stone over at awards daily has become a full-on right wing troll. Every single piece she writes is about how awful the left is. It’s insufferable childish nonsense. God I miss the days of In Contention.
JWB -- i want to say that i am but that might just be wishful thinking.
Over It -- thank you sort of. As for Sasha, i agree that she should ease up but i think it has more to do with stubbornness than anything vindictive or actually conservative. The amount of vitriol people throw her way is kind of insane, really. So maybe it's made her a little crazy? I dunno.
While I consider myself decidedly left-wing I am often alarmed at how much online bullying the left engages in (especially after ending bullying was such a cause for a couple of years). It's not a good look and it's not going to age well... and it seems to be in direct conflict with the world that the left actually wants (and won't help us gain votes either) so I dont really get why people have become this torch mobby about anyone who doesn't pledge allegiance to every single thing. There's room for different ideas. It's supposed to be a big tent.
I finally saw Trial of the Chicago 7 this week (yes, it took a while!). I'm surprised that Cohen is getting all the support. I thought he served the piece just fine, but I kept waiting for something more. I'd rank the following before him:
Mark Rylance
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
Eddie Redmayne
Frank Langella
Am I the only one confused by the love for Cohen? Is it love for Abbie Hoffman? Or Borat?
If Music and Kate Hudson wins, does this mean that we call shenanigans on the whole Golden Globes and just beat the shit out of the HFPA?
Is this going to be a three-hour Zoom call?
Broadview: 100% co-sign. I think Cohen is good, but Rylance was my #1.
Nathaniel - i'm curious why you didn't mention Kaluuya as a potential winner. I haven't seen it yet but I feel like internet buzz wise, he's gaining ground especially where Odom Jr can win in song.
Now at Oscars, Cohen isn't going to win a lead Globe for Borat so he could win supporting to go along with Chicago 7's best pic. Or it goes the way of Spotlight and wins original screenplay and picture. That's what I'm feeling right now anyway.
This is unfortunate because it's not a very cinematic movie. People would just be voting for what it stands for/represents.
Broadview: Thankful the buzz didn't happen on Rylance (it's unshowy, but that's also the easiest call for the lead role. He's the defence attorney in a courtroom drama!), lightly agree Mateen is above Cohen, whole heartedly disagree that Redmayne is above Cohen (if ANYONE "isn't working here" of the major roles, Redmayne is clearly the weak link), lightly disagree that Langella is above Cohen. As for why Cohen has maintained, in spite of not actually being the best of the movie...? I'd say 60% love for Abbie Hoffman, 40% love for Borat.
Nat: Except a big tent only works if both 1. Both sides of the tent refuse to EVER indulge the unhinged version of their politics. And 2. There are LITERALLY ZERO issues being kicked down the road that are both things that should have no controversy and need action that is both fast and unchanging. And, right now, the Republican Party is clearly failing that first part (ACB and MTG alone) and there's at least THREE issues in the US that SHOULD qualify under that second part but are being kicked down the road by one side: Climate, Infrastructure, Minimum Wage. So, yeah, throw those on top of the more comprehensibly controversial issues (I'm on the left side of them, yeah, but I at least understand WHY abortion rights and civil rights are controversial, as terrible as it is that they are) and OF COURSE the Left has reached the chainsaws, torches and rage point with the other side. (In short: This level of rage is going to age MUCH better than you think.)
I hateeee that Chicago 7 could be a frontrunner in any category. Cohen is fine but jesus COME ON, enough. Even if he had a "good" year. No actor, no craft, script, direction - nothing is worthy from this film. I get that's my opinion and I know I'm a constant hater of this movie, but it drives me nuts with so much superior work this year, particularly from groups constantly underrepresented in awards shows. They made better films, had better reviews, did better with critics groups, and they STILL have to be fight or are dark horses while films like Chicago 7 or Mank glide right in (Mank is far superior but still, not the best of the year).
It's like when I see people complaining about Regina King in director. Even if you don't agree she's top 5 or "it's an actor's showcase" (not really a valid argument since so much of performance hinges on a director, but OK fine), we still have to complain about a Black woman getting in, making history AND most agree her work is better (83 metacritic score vs. Trial's 77 or Mank's 79)? Those same people let Sorkin slide for...what? A made-for-TV movie courtroom drama that LITERALLY any competent director could make? What *is* it about this movie besides "Written and Directed by Aaron Sorkin"? It should have come and gone on Netflix without a blip.
Sorry it just makes me bananas. I hope I'm ranting for nothing and Nomadland takes it all.
I couldn't care less about the Golden Globes. I just feel captivated for the photos of this article.
I've been realized the synchronized compisitions of the pictures that been published in some articles (the principal image of the Doc Corner: The Best Documentaries of 2020 article is amazing)
I just want to congratulate the person who takes the time to choose the pictures that gonna create so rythmical images.
Great job team, very good job.
@Greg F I co-sign everything you wrote.
@Nathaniel You are wrong on Sasha. For the last 4 years almost every time more than more female director/writer is in contention for awards or films by/or about people of color are in the conversation; she ALWAYS brings up something to suggest that white men are getting run out Hollywood or the only reason they are condenders is political correctness. This year she is running rampant with it and I personally I am done. Comments like that degrade artists of color in general;not just the people being discussed. I personally would not call her out, because it has been years that she has done this and she is not changing so why waste my time but I am not obligated to view her website.
I have seen most of the available films..,. I think it was a lost year for movies.
"RePfeiffal" Yes Nathaniel, join the fetch side...
(it's not just the Critics Choice!) But as the worst offenders pointing any finger elsewhere, as Billie Dawn would say, is UNCOUTH!
Dare I say the Close coronation begins AND that Bakalova loses and doesn't win any of the big prizes from this moment.
volvagia -- you misunderstand me completely. I have no issue (zero / nada) with the amount of rage the left has for the right. They deserve every single bit of anger and shaming and shouting that they get and i agree that that fire, that righteous anger will age very well. What i object to is how the left doesn't seem to be able to modulate this anger when it comes to other well meaaning liberal, progressive, left, or even centrist democrats. There is room for many differences of opinion in a big tent so long as the end goal is civil rights, equality, healthcare, etcetera...
marshako -- i dont read other websites very much (too busy maintaining this one) so you might be totally right. all i can speak to is what i observe on social media and the amount of people i've seen being crazy nasty towards her alarmed me. There are ways to try and educate people or to help others evolve without constantly acting like they've shot up a room full of children or preached genocide or whatever. (basically in most instances of online rage i'd like people to take the temperature down just a few degrees)
Cesar -- thank you so much for noticing. I do the photo editing round here ;)
JW -- i'm trying to guess at the Globe feeling rather than reading the eventual Oscar discussion. I agree that Kaluuya is gaining ground (it always helps to have a leading role when nominated in supporting -- sigh) and it just seemed like he was a kind of "oh yeah and him" pick for the HFPA since the movie didn't show up anywhere else for them. I'd be surprised if he won the Globe but i could see him winning the Oscar, yeah. I'm not predicting it but it's definitely possible.
i loved sasha for years but finally had to unfollow her because she had MULTIPLE tweets DAILY that were political...and brutally repetitive...and it just felt like she'd been yelling at me for a year. i miss her talking about movies. i think she could have made her points more powerfully if they had been more strategically sporadic.
nathaniel, you always find the perfect balance in keeping the convo relevant with a political context, but focusing on movie talk. we can go to other site for engagement on politics.
No matter what happens, as long as The Father wins Actor Drama for Anthony Hopkins and screenplay.
I'm rooting for Riz Ahmed, but I have to admit I haven't seen The Father yet. I also have to admit that having finally seen One Night in Miami, I'm kinda sorta rooting for Regina King. It really is both great cinema and great drama. Maybe the Academy's director's branch will actually over look the fact that she's coming out of acting and nominate her anyway. I'd love to see a majority minority slate this year for director since, you could totally defend a King, Zhao, Lee, Chung + Fincher (or maybe Zeller, if The Father is as good as everyone says) on the merits. You wouldn't have to mumble about "representation", you could just argue excellence. Let's face it, there aren't a solid five best in any year really, there are always between six and ten who deserve it. This year you could have an utterly deserving slate with ONLY racial minorities and women. This may be the first time that's really ever happened. That's progress.
Sorkin won the Steve Jobs one for being Aaron Sorkin, and he will most certainly win one more time for being Aaron Sorkin.
Philip - I totally agree with you about how people are never satisfied. They complain once the award groups reward the same people over again, yet they complain even when they don't. This season in particular is very boring with the same nominees over and over again. (The usually packed leading actor category hardly has got seven serious contenders, while other years tend to have more than twelve.)
People complained when Jared Leto got out of nowhere nominations for The Little Things, while I think it's an inspired choice. You don't have to like his performance (it's always a question of taste, anyway), but it's a pleasant surprise, anyway.
Forgot I am boycotting Globes (watching it) because of the languages/race basis especially against Minari (and last year The Farewell). Not asking anyone else to but after learning the grift and bias I cannot enjoy watching it. I will check out winners on TFE. Everyone take care.
Such hate for The Trial of Chicago 7.
People liked the movie, that's as simple as that.
I don’t want to believe Chicago 7 is an actual contender for Best Picture so I’ll keep believing Nomadland will win, since it has won everything else before.
Regarding Sasha Stone and Awardsdaily, yeah, I’m done as well. She has very conservartive views even when she’s critizing how polítical awards are, and doesn’t understand the importance of inclusivity. She just thinks people are trying to be woke. We can do without her website.
Yeah, but Sasha is right in many things, actually. 10 years ago she was more leftist, sometimes even too leftist for my taste, but she changed and you can't blame her, to be honest. Last few years showed thet the left (that I always liked, despite some differences) is as intolerant as the right is. All those 'Cancel Culture', #meToo etc. movements are vengeful and biased and destroy people's lives, very often without reason (because, you know, the fact that Armie Hammer wrote some stupid things doesn't justify destroying his career). And you can't even discuss with the left because their opinions are dictatorial now. For example - did anyone really care about the truth in Woody Allen/Mia Farrow case when they were making "Allen vs. Farrow"? I doubt it. But the fact that it exists shows that the left isn't interested in the truth but only in "one side of a story". And that's sad.
So I'm on the side of Sasha now.
The political debate is fascinating because it shows our deeply ingrained biases. I am center left. Regarding climate change, I am all for regulation and education. Nonetheless, this is not an issue where both parties can really agree. Conservatives want less regulation and involvement of government in business. Hence, due to their philosophical beliefs, they will oppose laws and regulations for businesses regarding climate change (we have to look beyond the rhetoric to find the argument that really divides left and right in this issue).
I'll just do the film acting winners.
Hopkins,Mulligan,Saamberg,Pfeiffer,Colman,Cohen.
I haven't followed Sasha for a long time, but whenever I run across one of her tweets, she is ranting about social media (twitter in particular). I don't understand why she doesn't just deactivate. She could have one of her people run her site's social media page. It feels like an addiction. I've thought for years that she needs help.
The Picture Musical or Comedy category this year is one of the worst in recent times. The filme that was supposed to save It, The Prom, is a disastrous disappointment that Meryl Streep with all her efforts is unable to save. (She also didn’t save Into The Woods from drowning. James Corden was also there, churning the waters.)
My guesses
Drama
Picture - The Trial of the Chicago 7
Actor - Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Actress - Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman
Comedy/Musical
Picture - Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Actor - Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Actress - Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Supporting Actor - Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah
Supporting Actress - Glenn Close, Hillbilly Elegy
Director - Chloe Zhao, Nomadland
Screenplay - The Trial of the Chicago 7
Score - Soul
Song - One Night in Miami
Animated - Soul
Foreign - Minari
... fearing, though, Hamilton (ugh, NOT A FILM!) will upset at Picture and Actor, though. Hope it doesn't, specially when Lin Manuel Miranda has In the Heights running for 2021... and THAT looks amazing on paper... filmmaking wise.
I need to add... why HFPA nominated Hamilton and NOT Spike Lee's "David Byrne's American Utopia", which is an objectively speaking, a filmmaking masterpiece? I mean, wow, they really couldn't have done worse.
Not criticizing Hamilton as play, or the performances... but it's just an average filmed play, while Spike Lee used a brilliant range of framing, composition and film editing, to reinforce the message of the whole event.
Riz Ahmed for the SOUND OF METAL gets my vote. I'm all about actors who act with their eyes (see also Olivia Colman). Also, he learned to sign and play drums for the role. Amazing performance.
Frances McDormand will win, but I want Vanessa Kirby to win.
Rewatched PALM SPRINGS again recently with hubby, who loved it, and have changed my tune; now I finally get it. I'm rooting for it in that category.
HAMILTON, folks, is a F***ING musical play that was filmed, different than a film adaptation of a musical (e.g. The Prom) or play (e.g., The Dresser, with Anthony Hopkins). Talk about category fraud!!!
Pam & Jesus -- agree with you on Hamilton. SPECTACULAR stage show. But that's what that is. A filmed stage show. It should not have been eligible. And it's going to be weird if the actual movie version of HAMILTON succeeds (a tall order!) in making cinematic magic while also staying true to the spirit and invention of the show... and then people have already reworded it as a "movie" even though it wasn't that yet. The head spins!
@Nathaniel
100% agreed. I'd love to see Miranda win for In the Heights or the ACTUAL filmed version of Hamilton, not for this... it's like rewarding "Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl" as a film, when it is just a filmed play, back at the time (and I love that one!)
@Nathaniel
also, saw yesterday "Valley Girl". It's humble, and tremendously effective, in my opinion, not a masterpiece by any means but "The Prom" has no place in the final quintet with "Valley Girl" snubbed...
It's gonna be tricky for lots of things going forward, deciding on whether it's a film or TV show (like the debate on McQueen's Small Axes).
Two wonderful things I streamed during this pandemic are:
Jermyn Theatre's 15 Heroines (filmed "monologues" retelling stories of mythical Greek heroines) and Alan Bennett's reboot of Talking Heads plus two new ones (most of which were also performed later at The Bridge Theatre by the same actors). How should they be considered? For the first, it was produced for streaming because the theater was closed, so not sure. But for the second, definitely TV, because they were originally produced to air on BBC television.
Actor Drama is between Chadwick Boseman and Anthony Hopkins; Rinz Ahmed's gotta wait a better moment. Although he is at his best by now.
Maria Bakalova doesn't stand a chance in the leading category.Better if It was in the supporting one. For me she reads more supporting co-lead than second co-lead.
A victory of Michelle Pfeiffer, Rosamund Pike or Anya Taylor-Joy would not be bad.
When will everyone get tired of giving awards to Pixar?
@GregF Thank you. The contempt being thrown Regina's way speaks racist volumes.
Pam it wasn't Hopkins but Finney and Courtney in The Dresser.
@Prajhan
Bakalova... she would be OK in either cathegory... once she enters the film, for real (on her 2nd appearance) the film heavily depends on her and bases the whole characters arch and story on the relationship with Borat and her voyage of self-discovery. Borat 2, filmmaking wise, may be not as revolutionary as the first one, but screenplay wise, it's an absolute improvement on the original, with less improvisation and more solid structure and character dynamics. I think Adapted Screenplay is a clear possibility for a nom, and I still think that, even as a longshot, the film could even shock with a BP nomination on nomination morning (there's some passion for this film, but will be enough?)
I have a question unrelated to the actual movies but I want to get this right. Everyone is saying Cohen, but I always thought his last name was Baron Cohen, like Bonham Carter or Day Lewis. Is there anyone from England who can chime in on this?
For those of us who have recently canceled cable, is there any way to watch the Golden Globes live?
And I've never followed Sasha Stone and it looks like I'm glad about that. Twitter is a cesspool anyway.
@Markgordonuk. Nope, that was the original 1983 "film" version. Hopkins and Ian McKellan starred in the 2015 TV "movie" version, originally aired on BBC in the UK and Starz in the US. So I guess that makes a point about "film" and "TV movie", too, right?
Sorry, last comment on this subject, Broadway World makes the distinction in this post:
https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Proshot-vs-Film-Adaptation-Whats-the-Difference-20210206
Dave -- oh good question. I'm realizing i dont really know either. I thought Baron was a middle name but maybe not. ANYONE?
Dave in Hollywood, I always watch them on YouTube Live. You can sign up for a free trial if you've never used it before.
