Tragedy has struck this afternoon. Todd Haynes' would-be next film is officially dead in the water, two weeks after Joaquin Phoenix stormed off set from Mexico. No reason has been stated yet for why Phoenix has left the production, or why his departure has killed the film outright. Danny Ramirez is still ready to go. Todd Haynes is still ready! Why can't we have nice things?

Yes No Maybe So: "The Outrun"

After a strong premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, we have our first trailer for The Outrun from Sony Pictures Classics, directed by Nora Fingscheidt and starring international sensation Saoirse Ronan. The film has been seen as a possible contender for Best Actress 2024 since January, something no one wants to hear before the 2023 Oscars have even been handed out. But now we’re past the halfway mark of 2024’s cinematic year, and as the prestige-y vehicle and awards hopefuls start revving up their engines, we now have the time and patience to discuss Best Actress awards. The People's Joker: Legally Available In Homes Everywhere

The People’s Joker, a.k.a. the best comic book movie of the year and one of 2024's best films hands down, is now available to rent, buy, stream, and cherish on digital media. Wait til August 13th and you’ll be able to buy a Blu-Ray, DVD, and/or VHS tape to add to your collection. I’ve been cheerleading this film relentlessly since I first saw it in theaters four months ago. It pales in comparison to how long the folks who saw it two years ago at TIFF and have been waiting for it to receive any kind of release, while writer/director/editor/lead actress Vera Drew has battled against an ungodly amount of legal troubles and copyright litigation...

The first Best International Film submissions are here!

And just like that, we're off to the races. Though the 97th Academy Awards are still half a year away, the deadline for countries to submit titles for the Best International Film category is much closer. Nations have until October 4th to choose their representative feature, which must have enjoyed a minimum seven-day theatrical release before the September 30th deadline. Considering those timeframes, it's expected that the next few months will be full of submission news as the world prepares for a cinematic Olympics of sorts. This year, Ireland and Austria are the first countries to announce their official Oscar contenders…

Review: M. Night Shyamalan's "Trap" is a B-Movie and there is No Shame in that

Over the past 25 years, M. Night Shyamalan has built his reputation on twisty tales that sting with some nasty surprise before the end credits roll. Depending on the picture and the public's willingness to accept the director's oddities, his strategy has resulted in a handful of triumphs, a slew of mediocrities, and a couple of outright disasters. Going into Trap, one expects much of the same, but, in the biggest twist of all, Shyamalan has presented his audience with a fairly straightforward affair. The premise is simple, if ludicrous, the tone is sincere, and, for once, you feel the filmmaker's focus on entertaining rather than pulling the rug from under the viewer. M. Night Shyamalan's Trap is a B-movie that makes no apology about its ambitions or lack thereof…
