Three cheers to Pixar employees for their forceful righteous letter to Disney

by Nathaniel R

Thank you to the always informative Cartoon Brew for sharing this letter from Pixar employees. The original  source was the subscription newsletter Popular Information. The letter addresses Disney's disgusting support of anti-gay legislators in Florida (which we discussed a couple of days ago) and the company's lame attempts at pretending they haven't given that support without actually removing it. The letter was written by 'LGBTQ+ employees and their allies' at Pixar. It's forceful and necessary. Of notable interest is the admission that Pixar films have tried for greater diversity in their storytelling years before the current wave of movies but has always been shut down by their parent company. We're sharing it in full because it's 100% worth reading...

Top Ten "Big Red" Characters

by Nathaniel R

Red is currently a hot color in Hollywood and not because they've all become Almodóvar acolytes (if only!) Consider what's happened in just the past six months. Red gooey Carnage got titular billing in October's superpowered hit Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Then in early November, personality-free Celestial "Arashem" bossed the Eternals around on the big screen and the very next weekend Clifford the Big Red Dog joined them in theaters. 2022 also wants in on the fun and Pixar's Turning Red hits Disney+ tomorrow March 11th.

Because we're feeling silly, it is absolutely time for a list of TOP TEN BIG RED MOVIE & TV CHARACTERS. There was a lot to choose from in film and tv history even if there were too many devils. Why it always gotta be satanic? Red gets a bad rap on the colorwheel of personality...

Breakfast with... Mary Kay Place

by Nathaniel R

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is the way Mary Kay Place does it in The Safety of Objects (2001), with a rice cake, a cup of coffee, and a morning affirmation...

The Tony Awards return to tradition. Here's what's eligible...

by Nathaniel R

Shery Lee Ralph, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Beanie Feldstein at least season's Tony Awards

The past two years have thrown awards shows (not to mention the whole entertainment industry) for quite a loop.  Nowhere was that more true than the Tony Awards with Broadway entirely shut down and most of the presumed contenders never opening in 2020. The Tony Awards for 2019 and 2020 shows were finally held last September, just under a year after nominations were announced!!! With Broadway theaters reopened for some time now (proof of vaccination and masks still required) the American Theater Wing is resuming the Tony Awards as we know them, returning to their usual month (June!) and their usual venue (Radio City Music Hall) so we're getting the 75th Tony Awards just nine months after the 74th.

The Tony Awards will arrive on June 12th and the four hour show will air live, for the first hour on Paramount+ and the final three hours on CBS. from 7-11 PM EST.  Productions have to open by April 28th to be eligible and the nomimations will be announced on May 3rd, 2022. A list of eligible productions is after the jump...

Pleasure To Meet You

by Jason Adams

I hope you'll forgive me since I'm the member of Team TFE that pays the scantest attention possible to Awards Season, but when I watched half of the Independent Spirits this past weekend I was extremely confused to see that Ninja Thyberg's porn industry drama Pleasure had been nominated for a few awards, and it threw me down a rabbit hole of confusion with regards to that movie's release. I saw it at Sundance last year (that is in 2021) and I was blown away by it, and I had been waiting, waiting, waiting, for news of a release...
