It's SAG night. Let's jump right in...

Christina Applegate got here SAG card in the 70s on an indie film. She doesn't remember what it was (yeah, right) but everyone was "really really high". Cynthia Erivo played a shepherd -- "Everyone lauded my performance." she was hooked at five years old. Eugene Levy dreamed of being the next Mr Whipple but goes on and on in a funny bit. They are actors! (We always love that corny intro.)

Levy and (hot/gay) Son present Male Actor, Comedy Series for which, inexplicably, neither of them is nominatd. The statue goes to awards magnet Tony Shalhoub in Marvelous Mrs Maisel

"Dolittle"... again?

Doctor Dolittle's many literary adventures represent Hugh Lofting's biggest claim to fame. From 1920 to 1952, the English author published around children's books focusing on that eccentric Victorian veterinarian whose studies allowed him to speak to animals. The character is something of an iconic IP, so it's no wonder Hollywood has repeatedly tried to capitalize on its popularity. However, considering all the horrible stories and behind the scenes nightmares associated with these productions, it's a wonder any studio executive even considers putting on another Dolittle extravaganza.

The first of these misbegotten adaptations is a 1967 movie musical that's a good candidate to claim the title of "worst Best Picture Oscar nominee ever"…

"1917" wins the PGA

Though 1917 fever didn't immediately take after its buzzy first screenings on each coast, it was apparently just on time-delay. That's happy news for the film's supporters and campaigners though less so for those who are hoping for Parasite or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to win the big kahuna of movie awards on February 9th, 2020... and terrible news for those (raises hand) who are always hoping that Christmas releases don't win so that we can train distributors to stop with the Christmas glut each year since it's so bad for the health of adult films to bunch them all up in just one or two months.

With 1917's triumph at the PGA (and the box office), we can safely call the film the putative 'frontrunner' though the race is far from over. Other winners and more comments after the jump...

Prizes for the Parasite actors... and other Korean Awards

Jo Yeo Jeong wins Best ActressWith the SAG Awards approaching TONIGHT and our hopes not high for an all-Korean win for "Outstanding Cast" (even though Parasite features an absolute dream of an ensemble performance), we've been thinking about whether the cast has been truly undervalued or whether we've just got American blinkers on. So let's take a look at the prizes and nominations that the cast has actually won.

At Korea’s two big awards ceremony, the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Buil Film Awars, Parasite was the big winner. The best part of its dominance at both was that some of the actors won prizes. The winners of those two awards shows and a few other accolades for Parasite after the jump...

22 days till Oscar. Randy Newman, again !

Scarlett Johansson and Cynthia Erivo got all the press for being double-nominees this year at the Oscars but they were hardly the only ones. Others include Sound engineer Mark Ulano (Ad Astra, Once Upon a Time...) and special effects supervisor Dominic Tuohy (1917, Rise of Skywalker).  Randy Newman, nominated for both Original Score (Marriage Story) and Original Song (Toy Story 4) also got the double bringing his grand total up to 22 career nominations. Oscar's music branch can't get enough of him and he's also won twice before...
